I pre-ordered this. Not sure how to rip it, though. Or even how to play it. I don't think I can on my laptop, but my PS3 should be able to...is it possible to rip the music from my PS3?

Don't think it is possible. But it's indeed a problem since this OST is published on Blu-Ray.

Square Enix Music has confirmed that the disk will contain mp3s of the entire soundtrack for use on portable devices. Making the disk a Blu-Ray was most likely to cut costs as it's the soundtrack for a game that technically no longer exists. So I would pop the disk into a computer Blu-Ray reader to look around for the mp3s.

The problem is that I don't have a computer Blu-Ray reader. I guess someone else is gonna have to get the mp3s for us.

August 14th? I thought I wasn't due out til September 1st?

As for why it's on Blu-Ray, SE have stated because it would have taken over seven CDs to fill otherwise, making this probably the largest single-release FF OST album in terms of tracks included (it should also go without saying a lot of these tracks are being carried through into A Realm Reborn as well ;)).

I'm just waiting for it to become available for purchase on SE's European English-language site which is planned (as much as I want to get this for the music, I also want the little mini-Dalamud minion for my character in the game as well ;)).

A medley of 1-second clips from all the tracks from the OST was released. pfffft

(Unless there are bonus tracks, though, there are three 1.0 tracks missing from the OST...unfortunate. Yes, I can tell which tracks are missing just from the 1-second clip medley. They are: The Opening Movie track, the Monk AF quest track, and the Dalamud reprise of Answers.

Everything else is there - from the big boss battle themes like Fallen Angel and Rise of the White Raven to the small jingles like the Hatchingtide chiptune FF victory fanfare.)

So in other words Square Enix screws up with a lossy mastered album.. NICE JOB ! .. -_-

As one of those lowly peons to whom lossless and supposed "lossy" sound exactly the same (and as someone with an iPod, which cannot play FLAC), I think you need to stop bashing MP3 already.

I'm more concerned about missing tracks than whether it will have lossless and lossy or just lossy.

And it's coming out in Japan on August 14th (2 days from this post), and overseas on September 1st. Just to clear up any release date confusion.

LOSSY MASTERING

To the people who are saying "Lossless is only important to audiophiles, what are you complaining about?" I do understand what you mean. But a CD is a lossless medium. Putting lossy sourced music on a lossless medium is a lie. True enough, most people won't notice it, but that's hardly the point. I buy a CD instead of listening to a download because I have a certain expectation. So does everybody else.

This "it's good enough, what are you moaning about?" attitude is all well and good, but it encourages slipping standards. What next? The next disc is sourced from 128kbps MP3. The next one is from 96kbps MP3. The next one is in mono. Stop whingeing, don't be a snobbish audiophile! See what I mean?

A compact disc holds music losslessly. Putting something on there that has been through compression already - REGARDLESS OF HOW IT SOUNDS, or how good you perceive it to sound - it is an inferior product, and points to a distinct lack of care and quality control at the manufacturers.

Of course, it may be a dumb mistake - you're right, I can't see Varese / [insert other record label] doing this on purpose. But it's still a mistake, and one which should be rectified. People should NOT be reprimanded for voicing this expectation.

As to why it happened... Alan Silvestri's GI Joe [insert other soundtrack] had some last minute re-scoring about six weeks ago, if memory serves. That means that there was probably a bit of a rush getting the album out on time. That, combined with a simple human slip up, I suspect is the cause of this particular mistake. They have deadlines to meet and sometimes it comes down to "Release it NOW or you'll miss the deadline, and you'll have to cancel the release" - sooner than throw all of the preceeding efforts down the toilet, they release what they have. It's a shame, but sometimes it has to happen - it's the lesser of two evils.

[EDIT: Most of the music was recorded in January, with another catch-up session in late April, recorded in a different studio. I'll bet you all a warm English beer that the tracks on that CD that were lossy-sourced came from the catch-up session.]

I expect Varese will make good on this, and I also think they'll explain what happened. I do NOT for one moment think this was an intentional attempt to dupe us into having some second rate product. It's a screw up, and one which they will feel suitably embarassed about.

Let's have a bit less of the Varese hate - they're a wonderful record company with a thirty year history of quality. I know I was a bit harsh on them earlier on in this thread, but I was wrong - and I thank the people who've stuck up for them. They deserve the benefit of the doubt. They're human beings and they slipped up. It's hardly unforgiveable when you consider the hundreds and hundreds of impeccable releases they've made over the years. :)

Over and out. :)

I'm not going to weigh into that arguement, but for those unsure about how to access the mp3s on it, SE stated if you have a PS3 you can access the mp3s on the disc through the PS3's media manager and copy them from the disc onto your PS3, and from there via a LAN to your PC or other mobile device.

As for the album, I'm going to be preordering it later today once I go to the bank and put some money on my Visa debit card. I can't be bothered waiting for SE's European store to get it's butt into gear - I don't want to miss out on this (especially the in game Dalamud minion ;)).

EDIT: preodered it through YesAsia, as they did free shipping to Australia, so I should be getting it in the next week or so - I can't wait. :)

I got my copy of this yesterday. It's an amazing amount of music in both lossless pcm inside standard bluray m2ts containers and a few zip files full of mp3s in 320cbr. It would be a bit of a pain to convert to flac because several tracks are in one m2ts file divided by chapters. I've never had another bluray music disc before... The release is very well done though. Tons of music and very high quality.

I just wanted to clear up some comments that assumed it might be a bad quality master. The disc is something like 43 gigabytes of music, with just a few images thrown in to display while it plays.

I love it, but I'm rather biased toward all Final Fantasy music :P Did you play the "1.0" game at all? It has the music from that. I don't think I really got around to every area of the game when I played it so I don't know if it includes anything that wasn't in the game yet. Not sure if it includes anything new from "A Realm Reborn" either.

As someone who's played 1.0...

Nothing new from ARR on this soundtrack. The only song that wasn't in the game that's on the OST is Answers, which was in the data for 1.0 but wasn't used until the End of an Era video, which came out around 10 minutes after 1.0 was shut down for good. So I'm counting that as "was in 1.0".

A preliminary glance says that three tracks - the opening movie track, one of the job quest tracks, and the Dalamud reprise of Answers - are not on the OST. Aside from that, everything seems to be there.

Thanks, found it myself this morning on Soundtrack Download but was out all day so Tyrion beat me to the share. Thank you good sir. Can anyone with the liner notes possibly update VGMdb?

The track named "Freedom" is credited to Nobuo Uematsu on my download of Before Meteor (track 4) but to Masayoshi Soken on Eorzean Frontiers (track 17) can anyone with liner notes clear this up?

Thanks for the info! I had a little more time to examine the bluray files tonight. They are normal m2ts movies that show images panning for the video and the audio is in amazing lossless 96khz / 24bit format. I just converted the first track to flac as a test and it's 110MB. And there are 104 tracks total! :o

Hey guys. For those of you who bought the blu-ray and are wanting to transfer the mp3 version from it, here's how to do it using your ps3. Instructions are in JP but 3 things stood out, "LAN, PC, URL".

In order to get them, your PS3 must be hard wired to your router/hub. Make sure your pc is connected via ethernet too so you can transfer quicker.
On your PS3 xmb, go to Video==>Before Meteor and launch it. It will automatically begin playing, but what we want is the menu so hit square on your controller and go to Extras.
At the top you will find two options: MP3 Download and MP3 Copy. Click MP3 Download and it should show you your PS3's local ip address. This will enable you to access the 4 zipped files by typing the ip address in your browser from your computer or another device on the same network (ipad, samsung gal notes/phone). Click, save, unzip and ENJOY!

The combined size of the four zipped files is 865.7MB, 891.8MB when unzipped. There are 104 tracks with a bitrate of 320kbps.

Regards!
