One of the most successful stage musicals of all time, Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'The Phantom of the Opera' is still a worldwide phenomenon, topped only by Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schnberg's 'Les Misrbles', which got its big screen treatment in 2012.

In 2004, Lloyd Webber took the Phantom to the big screen under the directorship of Joel Schumacher, and despite delivering to audiences worldwide a wonderful piece of cinematography, they both failed miserably with their casting choices for the two leads - Gerard Butler as the Phantom and Emmy Rossum as Christine (Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway were originally offered the roles but turned them down due to contractual obligations elsewhere). Unfortunately, neither Butler nor Rossum were fully trained, experienced singers and against Lloyd Webber's lush score performed by a 105-piece orchestra, their obvious vocal limitations were more highlighted than complimented! For example, Butler gripped, strained and shouted his way through such classics as 'The Music of the Night' and 'The Point of No Return', whilst Rossum's voice failed to soar throughout and for once, Carlotta's voice was the more superior of the two!

Anyway, the score has never been released in instrumental format despite many fans clamouring for it, so in lieu of this, I have been working hard on various sources to try to re-create it as best as possible in the meantime.

Incidentally, please see one of my earlier threads for details of one particular process I used on the the blu-ray release of the film (cross phase vocal echo cancellation basically), which also includes a number of demos and a full tutorial of the process.

Finally, here's the first lot of tracks that appeared clean in the rear surround sound channels of the Korean DTS 96-24 DVD edition. Furthermore, I'll be posting these in source order rather than track order, so you know exactly where they came from (I have noticed incidentally a number of members on pianofiles that have an earlier 24-track version of mine, which they've listed as being the pre-recorded orchestra sessions, extremely rare and not for trade in some cases! Complete rubbish - the orchestra sessions have never been leaked by anyone anywhere and believe me, I've searched high and low for them over the years, but to no avail unfortunately).

1, Prologue
2, Angel of Music

6, Raoul, I've Been There

Thanks 100 times again! To help out, I have attached a clip from the complete instrumental title song ('The Phantom of the Opera'). I found it online back a little while ago and thought you would like to hear it. (I do actually have the entire song, this is just a preview). I have been trying hard to use the process you described, but I am not having much luck. Could this have to do with the fact that I'm using Sony Vegas and not Adobe Audition?? If there is any way you can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it! Keep up the good work!!

That clip is just a mix I did ages ago now using portions of the title song I had ripped from a DVD and the newer production click track (I posted my mix on youtube after doing it and its since gone onto appear on a couple of MP3 sites as a result). Anyway, I've actually got something a lot better and far more accurate to the movie version, which I will be posting on here soon along with all my other movie instrumental tracks incidentally (link via 'pm' only to seasoned posters/sharers by the way due to troll activity). Finally, I've no knowledge of Sony Vegas, so can't help you out in that respect. Sorry.

Ah, okay that makes perfect sense about that track (and its still a great version of the title song by the way so belated thanks for that!) haha :D I will definitely keep trying to make your process work. (I might just have to get adobe audition if I can't get anything to work on Sony Vegas.) I have a feeling I'm just not doing something right and that's why it isn't working. XD On a side note, if you ever need any of the play versions of something like Sweeney Todd I have the complete school edition instrumental soundtrack (some keys are slightly altered, but they're not bad at all). Again, thanks for everything. You're incredible!!

08-26-2013, 04:34 AM
Thanks but I've already got the school edition tracks for 'Sweeney Todd'. What are you trying to remove the vocal echo from incidentally? This process doesn't work on everything I've found.

Anyway, here's an excerpt of the end coda from the title song that I found clean (bar lair FX) on a Thai DVD release of the movie. Mysteriously, the track was in mono before jumping to stereo at exactly the same point where the vocals suddenly cut out. It does sound pretty epic and it's a shame the fault didn't occur earlier in the song - assuming it was a genuine fault that is!

Thanks! That's sounds fantastic!

In all actuality, I am trying to remove the echo from the movie of Phantom, so I definitely know it is possible from all the work that you've done. I found on your other thread where you had put the specific information about removing the echo from the title song. I followed all of the instructions: inverting, time shift, etc., but to no avail. I decided to try another song, but I still didn't have any luck. I really don't think it is Sony Vegas not allowing the process to work, I feel that I could possibly be misinterpreting a step (but then again, your instructions seem very straight forward and easy to follow.) I'm just stumped at what could possibly be going wrong. haha

08-27-2013, 02:02 AM
I currently am having to use the DVD mix with only the English and French audio to work with. I don't have the capabilities to rip a blu-ray to my editing software...

scorehunter66
08-27-2013, 02:19 AM
Right, it maybe that then as not all versions of Phantom work - particularly DVD ones due to the compression used on the soundtrack. I use the UK blu-ray release, which seems to work fine.

bcmac
08-27-2013, 03:14 AM
Ohhhhh, well that's very disappointing :( But I think I should have some 5.1 SACD files on my computer somewhere (if I can find them). Would those possibly work?

scorehunter66
08-27-2013, 03:45 AM
Yes it does work with the SACD 5.1 mix that was posted here, but not as well as it does with the blu-ray. You can't completely eliminate the echo and you get a lot of trace whispers left over. Also, you do realise you only use the front left and right channels and the rear left and right channels in opposition to each other, and not the centre channel? Also, after inverting the front left and right, when you play those back in multi-track along with the rear left and rights, you have to adjust the volume of the fronts (usually down) until the echo disappears. Furthermore, both sets of tracks must be in perfect synch with each other otherwise it just won't work at all.

Yes but the links will be private and only available via 'pm' to the more regular posters/sharers on here as I've been having loads of trouble recently with a troll using multiple accounts to get my files deleted from the host sites I've uploaded them to (he also has a few cronies doing the same for him). Tough line I know, but it takes a while to keep uploading these files and I don't really have the time to be on that continously as a result. Also, there's been a high number of people with new accounts and/or no real posting history that have been asking me for the links lately, which has made me all the more suspicious as a result. Now, some could be genuine, but I'm not prepared to take that chance.

JackxAngelica
08-28-2013, 04:12 PM
Then, I suppose I'm one of those that possibly won't get them since I don't post regularly 'cause I don't really have something worth posting/sharing here. I know that it sounds stupid but I'd really appreciate it if you trusted me and sent me just a few of the instrumentals when you're done. I'd be glad to do whatever it takes to prove that you can trust me and count on me to help you do anything. And I understand the fact that you hesitate to trust people. Same thing happened to me a while ago when a pianofiles account reported my files...

Remembering what you said earlier, you'll have a job with the title song. The first verse is clean in the rear channels but you're missing the guitar and handclaps from the fronts, the coda after a few bars in is impossible to get clean because of the way the Phantom has been mixed into it and then there's the bass line, drums and hi-hats from the centre channel that has been mixed in with the vocals. I've actually decided to leave it out of my latest collection because of these issues and am replacing it with the newer click track from the show, which does include a lot of elements from it particularly the guitars.

Sorry.... It was worth a shot. :(

I know two sound restoration guys here in the UK and one of them is a renowned industry expert in the field (he helped me crack the de-echo method by the way). As a result, I'm well aware of certain clean-up techniques, I have the software to accomplish what's required. However, even after making numerous alterations to the predictive noise reduction system on Adobe Audition for example, I considered the resulting artifacts combined with what you do lose of the track, just not worth the hassle at the end of the day. Ideally, I'd love a 100% clean isolated score copy of the movie soundtrack, but in lieu of the pre-recorded orchestra sessions leaking (I'm convinced they never have by the way), what I've produced is the best we're ever likely going to get of it.

Okay, thanks for the info...... I did this to remove the sfx like i did with "On My Own"... i didn't even use audition at the time. if i did the whole song in a noise reduction form, i knew i'd lose the percussion.

Here's something that might be of interest to Phantom fans. A clean portion of the title song instrumental from the 2004 film version (ripped from a Thai DVD release), followed by the same portion again from the current stage production click track. The guitars in particular are identical bar them being relatively unprocessed on the click track portion.

A little extra before I upload the last two files to complete the set - a 47 second video featuring the title song end coda that appeared completely vocal free on the Thai DVD release of the movie. All I did was to knock out the centre channel, which just had someone in Thai shouting "sing, my angel of music' on it, before recombining both the audio and visuals to make up the video. Incidentally, it's a bloody shame the glitch didn't occur at the start of the song as I would give my entire collection up for this one track! Anyway, enjoy!

Here's another 9 minutes worth of Phantom cinematic goodness, track 21 - Point of No Return/Chandelier Crash/Down Once More :-)

I've spent a lot of time on getting this one right as it's a major set-piece in the film and gets very dramatic towards the end! Anyway, enjoy!

JUST UPDATED :-)

Here's another new track presented a little differently from the rest. It's the title song from the film and I've made a semi-isolated score video using it (full HD 1080p quality). Incidentally, due to the bass, drums and hi-hats been located solely in the centre channel with the vocals, this instrumental is predominantly just the orchestra stems from the main front and rear channels (bar the intro and approximately two thirds of the end coda, which are complete). However, do enjoy and if you would like to see more semi-isolated/fully isolated score videos like this for the film versions of Phantom, Les Miserables, Evita and Sweeney Todd among others, then do let me know :-)

You probably want the instrumental version of the stage show. It's been posted on here before, and the only major cue you'll be missing compared to the movie is the swordfight.

Also, is it just me or is the title song missing from the FLAC pack?

That's because the bass-line, drums and hi-hates are mixed in with the main vocals in the centre channel, which I can't do anything about, so have had to leave it out as a result. However, here is the orchestra stem, which I was able to remove the vocal echo from. This also includes part of the full instrumental about 40 seconds before the end running to the end (from a Thai DVD release of the movie where the vocals suddenly cut out - shame the glitch didn't occur a lot earlier like at the beginning of the track).

Or at the start of the film itself. Since most of the cast is TERRRRRIBLE.

Mostly just Butler.

Oh you're too kind! What about the equally awful Emmy Rossum where for once, Carlotta is just tons better than Christine LOL! Anyway, that's why I've just done a semi-isolated score blu-ray version of the film, so you just get the visuals with the orchestra minus all the terrible singing! Perfect! I will be sharing this by the way as I want it everywhere!

I've only ever watched the RAH 25th anniversary production once because I find it very hammy/amateurish in places.

Sorry to necro-bump this, but thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. Good instrumentals of POTO that aren't horrible and/or MIDIs. I don't post often on here (I really should though...) but I just wanted to thank you again.

And for those bashing the movie, I thought it was just fine, thankyouverymuch. c:

Here's an update to some.. I've had this on my iPhone for quite some time.

This is the title track (in both FLAC and mp3) that is fully orchestrated with no loss of sound, etc. One thing though.. there ARE vocals, BUT..
they are WAY in the background, and the "blast" of the orchestra overpowers this. And too, if you're singing atop the music, it won't be heard.

This has got nothing to do with the film version whatsoever and is just an orchestral version of the title song that has been posted countless times on youtube as well as being available from iTunes, Amazon and the like also. Nothing like the real thing which my tracks here are.

Loads but I've already posted what of them I'm able to share. The rest I can't due to their rarity and value I'm afraid. Plus, the contacts I got them from wouldn't be very happy if I did and I'm not prepared to compromise my relationship with them in such a way as a result.
