Excellent work of Stavros Xarhakos with the original music and songs for the homonymous 1983 multi-awarded movie of Kostas Ferris. "Rebetiko" soundtrack is the most revolutionary work of Xarhakos with powerful songs written on the poetry of Nikos Gkatsos. The movie explores the history of modern Greece from 1922 till the civil war of 1945 through the life of a woman, Marika Ninou. singer of "rebetika" songs (the greek "blues" or "fados"). The great composer was at the zenith of his inspiration and created a musical masterpiece. The album contains some of the most beautiful greek songs ever recorded. At the 2nd CD (track 9) you can hear Xarhakos himself singing for the first (and last) time. A real gem.

Rebetiko, plural rebetika, (Greek: ρεμπέτικο, pronounced [reˈbetiko] and ρεμπέτικα respectively), occasionally transliterated as Rembetiko, is a term used today to designate originally disparate kinds of urban Greek folk music which have come to be grouped together since the so-called rebetika revival, which started in the 1960s and developed further from the early 1970s onwards.
