My rip. FLAC Level 8. Booklet scans and English track listing included. This rip is from the USA release by Discovery Records, so includes English sleeve notes as well in the very informative booklet.

What with recent less-than-complimentary discussion about Akira Senju, let's have possibly his finest score of all time, in a nice upgrade to FLAC. There are two versions floating about online; the first is an awful cassette transfer that plays too slow and is plagued by hiss and a more recent rip at 320kbps from Xiami, released to us courtesy of our own Herr Salat... Now, there are three.

The Mystery Of Rampo is a film which fits Senju's skills and strengths like a glove. Melody, harmony, emotion. This is where he shines - this is the sort of music at which there is simply no finer composer. In the sleeve notes, he writes about the profound effect the film had on him ("When I saw the rough edit of the film on video before music had been set to it, I felt tense with emotion. The world of Rampo was already completed in my mind. I was over-joyed at being surrounded by such talent and genius. Everything I had been trying to find in Japanese films for the past five years was in this work. I have devoted all of my knowledge and experience into the making of this recording. As a composer and creator of music, I could not have had a more wonderful or electrifying experience.) -- and his enthusiasm is clear in the score. Completely original, delicate, darkly romantic, sumptuous, beautiful. If you're more familiar with Senju the awkward action composer, or Senju the recycler... give this one a try... this is Senju the wizard, Senju the genius.

Technical note: I had a devil's own job getting a good rip of this CD. The CD itself is in spotless physical condition, but when I tried to rip it, it failed repeatedly on Tracks 6 and 7. After trying six different CD-ROM drives, I managed to get a rip that completed without any error. Track 7 failed AccurateRip, although it registered no read or sync errors, and EAC verified it as accurately ripped - so I'm confident that this is of good quality.

Oh yes, and I am aware that the last track is the same as the first track. ;)

Enjoy! :)

Thank you tangotreats for posting this soundtrack that I was not familiar with. I am going to give it a try as I trust your taste in these matters. Also, I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts for their erudition and honesty.

Thank you, can't wait to check this out. Tangotreats, as always your commentary is very informative and helpful as these Japanese composers I've been discovering lately - whose music I LOVE - are a total enigma stateside. Thanks!

Why Masahiro Kawasaki is nominated to the Japanese Academy Awards for this work and not Senju? Two scores exist? Please, somebody knows the answer of those two questions..

Could this be "reseeded"? Whoops reuplaod is down because it was on Zippyshare, which has very low retention times.
