From what I read the score itself is not very long because there are large portions of the movie without music.

One of Marco's lesser works, me thinks.

Pales in comparison to his riveting sci-fi/horror score for The Thing. Mostly looped/chugga-chugga-chugga action beats (even if they're performed by an orchestra) and dour atmospherics. No intriguing sonic hook or distinctive orchestrations that scream: THIS IS A HORROR MOVIE ABOUT THE END OF THE WORLD. Instead he's delivered warmed-over leftovers from his "A Good Day to Die Hard" score by way of Inception.

What a bummer. Even if I have no intention of paying to view this bloodless, white-washed bastardization of a very good zombie horror novel, I was still looking forward to hear what Marco could pull out of his hat.

The Lane Family is my favourite cue on this score. I really like how the electronics in that cue kicks in. I thought it was a decent score, no more no less.

It really dissappointed me, though... So "Remote Control" influenced!!!!! You even have that "BWWWOOOOOOOOOM" Inception-esque crappy brass effects!!!! So sick of it!! Zimmer & co. have definitely wrecked producers' and directors' brains with this so-called "new blockbuster sound" that each and every composer is imitating... :(

The only place to find "multicultural" influences is by forcibly (as in giving no real character development and always handing the shitty end of the stick for jokes and personality) injecting a single stereotype foreigner into every TV series there is.
Raj on Big Bang Theory, the colorful cast on Glee, the Korean in 2 Broke Girls...

Kind of makes you miss Fez on That '70s Show.

I blame Resident Evil for the super zombies today. It was a cute idea at first but then the whole scope of it just blows zombies out of proportion and it's no longer a zombie flick anymore than it is a creature-fest flick.

And damn studios wanting to maximize box office sales. I think the world of piracy has greatly influenced this soft-hearted world.
Since they know it's going to get pirated, anyway, they might as well open the doors at the cinemas as wide as they can before the DVD/BD sales come out (which is when the pirating spikes as early as a month before the discs hit the stores --- sure "cam" copies are "excellent quality" when compared to cardboard and saves you from going to the cinemas :rolleyes:).

It's really all kind of our own fault when you look at it from a really broadened scope. We, pirates, are the actual zombies: slaves to our own devices.

I very much admire and enjoy a number of Beltrami scores but expressing disappointment in an outcome is not synonymous with expressing disdain.

No one here can stop the Remote Control juggernaut nor, by the sounds of it, can Marco Beltrami, which is why I'm so very disappointed to hear him having to mimic the Remote Control aesthetic (in the same way Doyle and Navarette had to with Thor and Wrath of the Titans respectively).

I also love Beltrami's work (a lot, actually) and, just like gururu explained, to see that he has gone for a Remote Control-alike sound, or style. I've listened to this a second time and all I can say is that this score has no identity. Luckily, Beltrami's own voice still lies inside this: his brass work really stands out!! But again, the lack of originality is very evident...

I love Beltrami. And if people are hating this, it just means that I might enjoy it.

If it's a choice between Hans Zimmer and Marco Beltrami then I would definitely pick the latter for the fact that Beltrami knows how to do orchestral scores and innovate them using some other unique instruments to his advantage not just loud popping noises. Sadly If indeed he's also into RCP styles these days then where in for a World War Z-immer-ing for the long haul.

First, thanks for the upload.

Second, as a big Beltrami fan, I am very disappointed. I agree with what others have said, way too much of a Remote Control influence here. Hell, track #1 "Philadelphia" sounds like it was left over from Inception. I find it very troubling that the honchos in Hollywood think every damn score has to sound like Hans Zimmer wrote it. The 2010's will be known as the decade of bland scores that all blend together with no individual identity.......except for the awesome Brian Tyler, of course.

Thanks for all the input on the film. After reading about it I've decided to skip the movie and read the book instead.

Should you not Mr. Zimmer jr. pick that particular "word" out of my own wording then you have it in there - a fact in my own opinion besides it is indeed a "fact" that Mr. Beltrami is a trained classical musician or composer while Zimmer is definitely not. I am not heretic but I sure am a filibuster who doesn't like government that dictates what people should or shouldn't say. :)

In point of "fact," I have nothing against those types of scores, I'm just sick of hearing people bitch and whine about them constantly, as if they have anything to do with the way the industry works these days. As for the references made to RC in the thread, it's more a matter of the all too, too similar stylistic approach to the action writing and the very obvious signs of temp-track-itis in "Philidelphia". Beltrami can and has composed far more dramatically compelling thriller material. Ever heard his "The Watcher"?

And since I have no immediate plans to see this movie I'd be interested to know what sort of scenes the Muse track played under; montages, maybe?

It was used three times, to my memory. The first and most prominent use is that it's the initial music you hear in the film and serves as the opening credits theme (I noticed "additional music by Muse" after Beltrami's credit). The other two instances were used for moments of great dramatic impact -- to be honest with you, I can't even recall those scenes, that's how forgettable this movie was.

Turns out that Muse were inspired to write the album (and those tracks) by reading the original novel of World War Z. Then Brad Pitt heard the album and decided to include it in his film, serendipitously. Check this out:


"Two years ago, we wanted to find - remember the theme from The Exorcist? It's called 'Tubular Bells'," Pitt said. "We wanted to find something like that.

Nice ear. It wasn't the first thing that came to mind, but I can kind of gleam it from listening again.

I imagine lots. Just not popular enough to make a commercial or movie appearance.
Check out JunoDownload and other sites where you can purchase techno/dance/trance/dub/etc music and you'll see a lot of covers of obscure mixes of music.

Indaba Music has released Tubular Bells as a whole package in "stems" for remix artists to do their own dub mixes of the song. It was a featured contest.

Here are the two Muse tracks featured in World War Z. My wife and I saw the film this morning, and were very pleasantly surprised. The two Muse tracks, 'Isolated System' (which is used throughout the film) and 'Follow Me' (bits of which are edited together with 'Isolated System' for the closing credits) are used to great effect.

I'm posting the instrumental versions for those who want them for completeness, as well as those who are enterprising enough to create an edit that represents the way the tracks were edited for the film's credits.
