I must say though that 'Tornado' has the same distortion problem as seen previously. So it sounds like they capped off the range on that track to the masters. A shame for sure.

It was for me...I thought my speakers were crapping out but it's the same at all volume levels. I'm guessing it was either an artistic decision or an error. Aside from that, this set is very well mastered IMO.

tehƧP@ƦKlyANK -Ⅲ
06-12-2013, 11:21 PM
Try Foobar with ReplayGain scanned, applied and played back.
"Apply gain and prevent clipping according to peak"
Also set it to play according to track and not album.
The album decision plays the same ReplayGain value the same for each track when each track has their own RG values.

You can also scan this FLAC version and the MP3 megathread version and see the RG values are completely different.

Less distortion with RG, imo.
Nothing like watching Tron: Legacy on Blu-ray. Now THAT'S distortion! :notgood:

Keep in mind that ReplayGain is not a permanent solution. It's only embedded tags and will play back with RG according to software/hardware dependencies.
And also keep in further mind that not all hardware allows full control over the RG playback: album values VS track values.

---------- Post added at 03:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:13 PM ----------

Disc 2; Track 3; General Zod
has "artistic" distortion. It's not the same distortion/clipping as you would hear when your speakers blow up.

Mind you, if it IS mastering errors, and the distortion is not meant to be as prominent as it is, it CAN blow up your speakers.

The sound mixing for the movie Tron: Legacy was known to blow theater speakers when it was running in theaters.
And there have been several people to report the same distortion for home releases on Blu-Ray.
And it wasn't just a few "bad copies floating around" or anything. It's just the sound mixing itself.

Anyone over at any of the other composer forums (HZ, JNH, etc) report the same thing?
Remember when Jurassic Park had the mastering errors with its dropped audio?
Yeah, look for the other forums talking about if it was ever brought up to the distributor and if the distributors said anything about "intentional" or "will be fixed soon".

"Oil Rig (01:45)" actually time 01:31.

A Information From Hybrid Soldier:

BTW there is a difference between the physical & digital version.
On CD the tracks are shorter because crossfaded (Oil Rig for instance is 1:31 while it's 1:45 on the digital one).
Tracks are all independent from the others on the digital one. First time ever I see this !

After listening to this several times it is starting to grow on me as a standalone listen. Still not amazing as many put it though. Amazing to me is something that is flawless and unbeatable. This is deffinetely not flawless and beatable. the album could have been presented far better to enjoy the listen more. Instead of trying to develop tracks ( in this case not many as some come up to what should be something big and then nothing) the album is what should have been developed as a build up. Instead we get a nice start, to a high then a come down, back to a high then another come down etc. it's like they have thrown in a lot of tracks and not really cared how they progress as an album. I seriously think the sessions will not offer much more from what we have here. Maybe one or two cues. If I may add though, this is possibly the best sounding zimmer score to date! apart from 'terraforming' which has a bit of rumbling from around the two minute mark (can't remember exactly).

Thanks for offering the deluxe version for download. I definitely wouldn't have bought this item, and unfortunately listening to this mindless pop/rock/synth/would-be-orchestral drivel confirms my worst expectations. What a sucky follow-up to the Williams, or even the Ken Thorne scores.

Okay, I've figured out a film order that I'm more or less ok with, after seeing the film last night. I was pleasntly surprised to find out that most of the tracks on the album are more or less the versions used in the movie. I'm not entirely sure about "General Zod" or "Arcade", but I do know that at least some of those tracks are used in those instances (I think those tracks are suites). I couldn't locate "This is Clark Kent", "This is Madness!" or "Earth" anywhere in the film.

So here it is:

CD1: 01. Look to the Stars [02:58]
CD1: 04. DNA [03:34]
CD1: 05. Goodbye My Son [02:01]
CD1: 12. Ignition [01:19]
CD1: 11. Launch [02:36]
CD1: 13. I Will Find Him [02:57]
CD1: 07. Krypton's Last [01:58]
CD1: 02. Oil Rig [01:45]
CD2: 02. Are You Listening, Clark? [02:49]
CD1: 03. Sent Here for a Reason [03:46]
CD1: 15. I Have So Many Questions [03:47]
CD1: 16. Flight [04:18]
CD1: 09. Tornado [02:53]
CD2: 04. You Led Us Here [02:59]
CD2: 07. Arcade [07:25]
CD2: 03. General Zod [07:21]
CD1: 08. Terraforming [09:49]
CD1: 10. You Die or I Do [03:13]
CD1: 06. If You Love These People [03:22]
CD1: 17. What Are You Going to Do When You Are Not Saving the World? [05:27]

CD1: 14. This is Clark Kent [03:47]
CD2: 01. Man of Steel (Hans' Original Sketchbook) [28:16]

CD2: 06. Earth [06:11]

Did anyone read the digital booklet?

I laughed when I read that Hans invoked a 15-person "drum orchestra".

With Sheila E. in it, he can call it whatever he likes.

The track "This is Madness" is minimalism at its best/worst. Most bland and uninteresting piece of music I've heard in some time. The first half was okay but then after realizing that for the second half it was basically going to be the same thing again, I decided Philip Glass does minimalism better so I switched over. It seems for Man of Steel, Zimmer kept it very minimalistic which may tickle some of your fancies but after going on a Philip Glass binge, I'm a bit fed up with Zimmer's overblown (and overhyped) minimalist style. Zimmer records with a live orchestra but it comes across as sounding very digital and it loses a little human element (that seems to be missing from a lot of the films he does) by that inclusion. That's what makes Inception such a great score for him: it dealt with the dream world so heavy electronic elements only make sense to use. I didn't really care that I couldn't tell a live instrument versus a synthesized one. It didn't matter. Now with a score like Man of Steel, I understand the exclusion of human elements is acceptable because Clark Kent is not human but at one time, he thought he was. It's the discovery that should cause the music to go through an emotional shift of tone but all Zimmer seemed to do here is amp up the action right from the get-go with poor attempts at a theme. His attempts at human emotion in this are almost embarrassing to hear. Now that's not to downplay the entire score. There are some nice bits on the piano that hearken back to old school Zimmer that admittedly did put a smile on my face among some other cues that offered a nice sound once again reminiscent of old school Zimmer while other parts just fell flat, particularly anything with that female vocalist. I don't usually mind female vocalists but something about her voice just didn't click with me. It's not just Man of Steel's music that has made me feel this way. I didn't really care for the music in 300. I like Tyler Bates but I thought that score was a particular disappointment. I would have liked to see him return to a Zack Snyder film again however it's only natural for Snyder to pick Zimmer because he's the hottest thing in town right now and allows the director to follow his dream and direct a film that's obnoxiously loud and features a noisy minimalistic sound to perfectly accompany those heavily choreographed fight scenes that'll take front and center over character development. I expect character development to be very light compared to Smallville (naturally) and will succeed in neglecting some crucial bits of the Superman mythos that I'm sure many fans have been waiting years to see done right. I wouldn't know as I don't read comics. Nor have I see Superman 2 or 3. I went through a fairly light Superman phase. It reached its peak around 2011 when some truly super things happened that made me feel like a super man. I even helped save a man from being crushed to death by his car. Unfortunately this weak little fella didn't have the muscle strength to hold the whole back end of the car up myself but the fact that I tried matters the most to me. I didn't run away, I was there to help and most importantly I acted. Of course, the ironic thing is I was blasting the Superman Returns recording sessions prior to the incident and after the incident. Coincidence or fate? You tell me. It's just too damn cool of a memory to neglect and forget to mention. That's just the icing on the cake though. I've had some super amazing experiences but also some super fucking ridiculous situations. The first situation being that a movie I cherished that eventually got me into filmmaking (The Evil Dead) was getting remade. I never watched the old classics hoping to remake them nor did I really say much about remakes UNTIL the Evil Dead remake was announced. I hoped to learn from them and do better than them. In this day and age, what is constituted as "better" makes me hold my head in shame and say "we went from this to that? H-how? W-why?" I don't know, I'm cynical when it comes to film these days. We have too many pretentious filmmakers out there that spoil their welcome with their over-inflated egos and under-delivering (in my opinion) product yet still keep getting the same projects. M. Night Shyamalan seems a good example. He needs to go back to smaller films before he makes anymore big films. He got himself in a rut with the twist endings thing and now it's like he doesn't know how to end his films anymore. I mean what the hell was up with The Happening? Was he trying to be serious with The Last Airbender? Devil was pretty cool but sadly he didn't direct it. I haven't even seen After Earth but I expect nothing good, apart from James Newton Howard's score, out of it. I mean I'm tired of Will Smith and I don't even know his kid but he annoys me and Hollywood families in general annoy me. I mean read up on the Smith family. BUT who am I to judge like I'm something better? I can't wait to start working my way up in Hollywood but first, I've gotta get started. So many ideas to funnel through and piece together. For those who have heard my Blood Wings Sinfonia works, could you imagine hearing something like that with coherent images rather than it just be a trippy experience with no plot? I'm not the type of person to keep plots simple but since some of my plots get rather complicated, I take my time to correct them versus leaving them as is. I'm always improving and I strive for perfection. I do plan on purchasing a violin in the upcoming months, taking some music theory classes and start experimenting. With over 100 composers as inspirations in multiple different genres, there are a million possibilities as to what I could write. I'm sure I could write a heartfelt drama, a touching comedy, terrifyingly emotional horror , pulse-pounding action ranging from minimalistic to symphonic to you name it. Just because I haven't done it YET, doesn't mean I CAN'T do it ever. My challenge right now is just to learn how to do it. It takes me a minute to catch on to things but once I am able to tell the different notes apart to be able to tell which score is in C minor, C major, D minor, D major, etc etc I should be fine. I have sheet music in my possession but with no formal education on how to read it (yeah I was the moron that decided to quit band because he was too lazy to take care of his instrument in favor of the elective exploratory class) but with plenty of musicians for influence, I'm sure with more exposure I could put something together. This all ties back to Zimmer very lightly but it is relevant. Upon a recent re-viewing of the original 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I admired director Tobe Hooper's use of sound for the score. I can rightfully conclude that no score before or since has been as effective at shocking an audience as that score did. While I admire Zimmer's use of experimental sounds over traditional orchestrations, I find his ambient sounds to be very dull and superficial. Like it's there to merely support the images and nothing else. It's a shame to me how music is so abused in movies these days. Remember that film I Spit on Your Grave? Had that film been made today (oh wait, it was remade), it would be loaded to capacity with unnecessary drones and industrial style sounds. Basically, one of the standard modern horror cliches. However, it featured no score and was still very powerful that way. I'm sure Meir Zarchi could've whipped some form of a score up for it but he made the wise decision to let the only music remain limited to being one of the rapists' harmonicas with no supporting music score at all to better allow the shocking images to sell themselves. My point with this all is that Superman is a complex character and we don't need a minimalistic score to go along with one of his adventures. Hell, even the cliche master (but innovative) Marco Beltrami could've whipped up a more amusing action score for this than Zimmer ever could. Like another poster (and myself) has already stated, if this is the direction film scoring is heading, leave me out of it. If I have to blow the last of my savings to rescue the last orchestra in existence with the option to detonate the secret bomb in every synthesizer in existence up, it'd be a pretty easy choice to make. Anyway, that is all.

Both, sort of. It sounds at the end of the film and leads into the credits. When the heroic theme starts, the credits start.

Now, How 'bout we start to make a chronological order of the tracks? :D

That's why I just made to the sixth sentence :P (apart from being at work..)
I like Zimmer's work very much, but you do have a point. A thought (may be for another threat btw), to what extend is scoring digitally (i.e. with digital elements) the only way to produce such a score in a very short time period while running a company like his?

Thanks to the poster btw!!

I have had a problem with Zimmer before. It struck me with "On Strange Tides" when Complete Demo Recordings sounds to me like Complete Film Recordings. Seriously how many people can distinguished "high quality sample" cue from "live-orchestra-than-digitalized" cue? What is the point of using orchestra at all? It's dehumanizing composition and might work with action pieces, but i.e. human side of first two Batman movies were represented by "orchestra only" Newton Howard and it was great movement. MOS sounds like drop-out demo from "Inception" using "Drop Zone" samples, standing with two feet in early 90s. I was counting for Zimmer to develop some sort of innovation for this, like "fan chant" for DKR or slowdowned Edith Piaf's recording (legacy to Williams score??), but there is nothing to be found. Super deserve better. And I'm no hater - I'm waiting for every Hans' score like for christmas - since "The Rock". There is no soul in this, he really doesn't like to do it and you can feel it. Sorry HZ - you suck

I must say that this is a very very good point we rarely point out.

Now, I see you mentionned "The Rock". It is in my memory one of the worst soundtrack I ever heard in a film, and I haven't given attention to this composer for years because of it.

According to someone with the sessions, there's an hour and ten minutes of new music missing from the deluxe edition. Every cue on the album is on the sessions so there's no unique music. I can't verify that but I will as soon as I get them. However long that takes. I can't wait until this gets around. I'm finding myself more and more fascinated with this score. I've gotten over the fact that it's not John Williams' style in terms of thematic material but the percussion and choir definitely make this stand as one of Zimmer's best. The album, after a few listens, is surprisingly not as bad as I was notorious for claiming it was back when it was released. There's less of that synthy sound and more of an organic sound...as organic as Zimmer gets when mixing orchestra and synth. Can't wait for the sessions!
