I salute your return, my dear friend.
Thompson and Creston were both unknown
to me, but I enjoyed their intense lyricism.
This music is simply moving and beautiful.
As Odysseus Elytis has said:
"like a waterdrop clear in the sunlight".
Thank you very much for sharing.

I had other things to do with my life when I first posted.... sorry to disappoint. I am a terrible person and everyone should beat the shit out of me for posting this music.

I heard the 3rd symphony late one night while reading. It made me put down my book and allow the music to envelop me completely. Serene and powerful... and of course American in flavor. It had that folksy sound for which Copland was so famous- but it is not Copland. It is Randall Thompson reaching out to your heart.

Thompson was most notable for his choral music, I believe, and wanted to take his hand at writing symphonies. He did a pretty damn good job. I present here my favorite of the three.

Creston's piece featuring Gregorian chant as a theme (oh that opening solo violin!)... an American composer who composes using such an ancient format and produces lovely music is notable, and a fitting insertion for this personal compilation.

It may not be ' could be film music' but remains a treat for the ear and especially those whose soul is moved by such deep, emotional works of art.
