I use a combination of Sonar 7 Producer, EastWest Quantum Leap libraries, and for concert works I use Sibelius 4.

Rudy Roughnight

I thought I heard some Quantum Leap sounds from your music, JBarron2005. I gotta buy me some of EastWest's stuff. I just use FL Studio and some soundfonts.

East West has some very potent libraries. The strings sound very full and you can easily get a "big-movie" type of feel to your music. Where it's a bit lacking is in the woodwind department, especially the english horn. Beautiful instrument, Morricone used it a lot in his western scores, but with East West it sounds relatively cheap somehow and you need to add a lot of effects to make it sound good. Vienna Symphonic is very good in terms of woodwinds on the other hand. But they are very expensive.

I never heard of Vienna Symphonic before, but dayum. Dat price.

For EastWest, since they're having a sale, I was considering getting these:
Goliath
Gypsy
Ministry of Rock
Pianos Gold
Silk
Symphonic Choirs
Symphonic Orchestra Gold
Voices of Passion

JBarron2005
05-07-2013, 06:35 PM
I would suggest Orchestra Gold and Stormdrums 2 if you are interested in making symphonic sounds. Goliath is great for smaller mixed ensembles and is basically a sampler of orchestra, jazz, rock, electronic, piano, and percussion. Silk and Gypsy are really awesome and probably will be my next two purchases from them. I'm luke warm on Voices of Passion, if I were you I wouldn't get that one. I have it and I am not satisfied with it.

Thanks a lot for the insight, JBarron, but what dissatisfies you about Voices of Passion?

galaga

I am using Reason for the most part, but i am pretty short on good symphonic sound fonts. I think i've found some good strings, but i really want horns, awesome deep inception horns. I also use Adobe Sound booth and Audacity to cut up stuff when im done. Aside from FL studio, i actually don't know much about what's out there. I started by asking around if there was an adobe photoshop equivalent to music programs, and i was told Reason. Now i have to look up what you guys are talking about : P

The voices just sound weird and synthesized. Some of them are good, but for the price it doesn't meet my expectations. If you are going to get good vocal quality, I would go with Symphonic Choirs. That, imo, would be the best investment for you can actually have the samples do lyrics using a Word Bank.

I compose, but never thought to mention it on here. Perhaps I just felt a bit pretentious introducing myself as a composer on a forum with all this great music.

Anyway, I wouldn't call myself a music pro, but I've scored a few indie features and have credits on IMDb.
Nothing spectacular, but feel free to take a listen.

First, I must say you've got some pretty trippy album art going on there. I'm really enjoying your stuff, particularly "Looking at Them from the Top of the Hill". Such a cool feel to those songs, almost makes me think of Yann Tiersen's style.

Also, general question: Where do you guys go online if you want feedback on your music etc... I'm making a game, and getting ready to launch, i did the sound track, but it'll be the first time i ever put anything musical out there in public. I don't really have a trained ear or anything, so i wanna be sure the music isn't a total mess. Any suggestions? Soundcloud doesn't seem that useful for critique.

Puhn
06-06-2013, 07:02 PM
I would recommend you to ask some friends to 'test' your music or get in contact with other musicians via internet. Some honest and detailed feedback is always hopeful before you unleash a bunch of tracks to the public. :)

herbaciak
06-08-2013, 10:25 AM
Also, general question: Where do you guys go online if you want feedback on your music etc...

Actually it's hard to get feedback on the internet imo. People like to listen, to download music etc. but they are not very eager to say what they actually think expect for "cool" or "meh" or "love it". Comment's like that are nice, it means that people care a bit, but those comments are not helpful when it comes to learning / developing new skills etc. Even on forums that actually are about music making, people are very limited in their opinions and most of them are about bad /good use of samples or poor / nice mastering. One out of ten have something more to say about composition.

So my point is, that You shouldn't care about opinions, do what you do, share your creation with world and... wait ;).

p.s.
And I'm perfect example of person who listens to piece, then gives "like", say few words at best and... next;).

galaga
06-08-2013, 11:17 AM
Those are good observations, its nice to know people will like your stuff, even if they don't have much to say. I don't care much for opinions, i want subjective analysis by people who know more than me, those are the only sort of comments i find useful : P I like feeling dumb, its the only way to learn.

In my opinion it's just... meh. You write that it's "showcase of musical variety", yet I cannot hear any variety. Maybe it' s just me though. I'm gonna add on the goodish side, that it has some kind of mood, and minimalistic, yet nice melodies. But for me it's mostly boring and quite cheap. Don't worry though, it's "not my cup of tea" kind of music, so keep doing what you do;).

What baffles me more, is the fact, that you want money for that. As you say, it's demo. And I see it that way: you are actually blocking an ability to hear your works, to people who might be interested in it. It's a bit of a paradox, that you want to show your music and yet you are making it harder to hear. I don't get that...

p.s.
That "Heartbeat" track is sooo bad, so cheesy with that cheap beat, sorry ;P.

Rudy Roughnight
06-16-2013, 07:04 PM
Thanks for your criticism! I actually don't get it that often. Yeah, it's a paradox, but it'll be fully streamable anyways. I guess here it would be different, since elsewhere I've advertised this, most people have heard my music via SoundCloud or live or are familiar with collaborations.

But damn, I honestly appreciate you ripped me a new one. Haha.

Thanks Rudy! I remember I was really proud of it at the time. I wish something had come out of the game itself :P

Galaga, your stuff sounds pretty sweet! I really like Sleeping Dragons, but perhaps you could try panning some of the instruments and messing with dynamics a bit more? At times it sounds overwhelming with all of the instruments dead-center--but in the places that does happen, it's only for a short time. What's the piece for, if I might ask?

galaga
06-27-2013, 07:09 PM
Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep that in mind when i do another pass. I have never really tried to mess with panning the stereo thing or whatever. I do know that some parts of that song are overpowering, and for me there are a couple of places where the melody is kinda wobbly. I'd like to get it more defined and clear.

Nearly all my music is related to game projects i am developing. This track in particular is for a game with sleeping dragons in it : D I'll post online about the game when i make enough progress : P

Heck, why not, I'm trying to get a little exposure I guess. Composing actually isn't my first love, I'm a far better graphics artist. I just tinker around with music, so I'm mostly terrible, though I'm trying to get a bit more serious about it, especially since a buddy of mine is getting back into programming. I just play around throwing notes together until I like what I hear. Creative accidents are fun, too.

https://soundcloud.com/thesabercode

I'm heavily influenced by the Rockman X soundtrack (one of my absolute favorites) and the likes of Saitama Saisyu Heiki.

I'm actually working on a full 'soundtrack' to this idea of a shooter I have named Sabercode. Yeah, kinda centered everything around the idea of it.

I do all my work in Renoise with various plugins and samples.

Here is my latest release in the form of Sulyya Springs by Masashi Hamauzu, arranged by yours truly. I tried to expand and re-imagine the piano collection arrangement of this one. My goals with this were 1) to create something more lush and water-like as well as 2) adding a section from the original that I simply adored and 3) making this piece work for two instruments. Lastly, but probably the most important thing is that I added a theme from the game in to create a story presentation. All of my arrangements have musical easter eggs to encourage people to listen closely. Each egg is relevant to the story of the composition. I won't spoil it, but it will be obvious for those who love FF13's music.

The musicians that I got to perform the arrangement are simply among the most talented people I have worked with so far. They have brought this music to life! I am honored to have them contribute their talents!

Without further ado, please enjoy!

I sometimes compose in my free time. My main problem is that I tend not to finish my original songs because I get to a point when I have enough of it and just trash it or save it and never open it again. I have no musical background. I started composing and it kind of came to me that I might be “good” at it. Well, not good but better than most of people who never picked up an instrument. One thing led to another and I started playing guitar, piano and now I started playing violin. :D Anyway, here’s my soundcloud account, I might put someting up in the future and I would love to get feedback :)

I just put out a song and I want to brag about it because I love it, sooo… yeah :D

Meh. I've been tinkering with all my tracks to some degree, not having a whole lot of time from work. I keep hitting one pretty heavy, though. It's nearly finished, but I gotta mess with some articulations, clean up some junk (like not cutting off the square at the end), some other fine tuning, and work on the mixing.

Here is one of my arrangements from my next production called The Travelers. What is the Travelers? In short, it is a team of arrangers and musicians that I have personally selected. The story is more than that, however. Imagine yourself in a traveling group of musicians playing folk music in taverns and pubs in Europe. You travel the various countries in Europe from Ireland, England, France, Spain, and even Scandinavian countries. You play a different set depending on where your group may perform but you might also create new stylings by combining regional sounds. This album covers music from a variety of styles of European folk music and we have chosen to arrange music from Japanese RPG's. Everything is 100% performed by musicians and all of it has a organic sound to it. The track above is my arrangement of Dissipating Sorrow (or Endless Sorrow depending on the translation from Final Fantasy IX. This is very much a beta version and the final recording will have more instruments in the mix. But this gives you an idea of the feel for this album. Hope you enjoy and look for the album this Summer!

Fog in the Morning is beautiful. The first thing I thought of when I heard the track was "Halo 3: ODST".

Why? Probably because a lot of that game's music was piano driven, and I think this song shares the same first couple notes as one of the songs from ODST.

Hello, everybody. Now is the time I've decided to 'arise from the shadows' and finally share some of my music - which is in some measure, halfway decent.

I don't have much experience, and have only really been trying (inconstantly, on and off) for about less than a year. As a result, I don't have too much to show for it! :p But, what can help, is that I get inspired rather easily, or, in other words, sometimes when I'm listening to a track or cue I really enjoy, I'll want to compose something similar to it, or on occasion, whatever I compose will reflect the mindset or musical mood that track put me in.

That doesn't mean it always will prevail in making what results from every one of those instances - good music, however, with more (and consistent) practice you can improve the abundance of good music that comes from those experiences. :)

What I do have to show to you, is 11 demos/unfinished works of mine, which are sorted from least to most recent. Not much I feel like I want to say about them, at least for right now. :p But my sincere thank you to whomever takes the time out of their day or night to listen to these, let alone read what I have to say. :)

EDIT: Please excuse any imperfections in timing or otherwise. :p

I would describe my sound as a mix of influences from John Carpenter, Vangelis and John Barry, with influences from more contemporary hip hop and electronic thrown in for good measure.

and here is the "official" video I made using clips from Star Trek The Motion Picture. Bear in mind I'm very much a novice at film editing:
