Thought I'd throw this out for you fine folks. Looks likely that Mr. John Williams will get the scoring reins for the new Star Wars film, as per this article from Collider;

As wonderful as Mr. William's music is, I personally would have like to have heard Giacchino's take on the Star Wars universe, but alas, it seems that will not be the case.

The new Star Wars looks like they're going to be pure fan-service to the old farts from the 70's, than the Star Wars for a new generation of filmmakers.

As wonderful as Mr. William's music is, I personally would have like to have heard Giacchino's take on the Star Wars universe, but alas, it seems that will not be the case.

Giacchino would need to revisit some of his more Williamsy-sounding work first, like Medal of Honor. I personally am glad to hear it: Williams is not just a tradition, but Star Wars is as much his baby because, let's face it, without his music, it just wouldn't be Star Wars at all.

WHY does being an original fan have to be derogatory? I am eager to see new films, by new directors. I am happier Lucas is not doing it. Musically, we have heard various versions with The Clone Wars, and Shadows of the Empire, so I am not tied to Williams. The new trilogy was not as interesting to me as the original. But I do not think a composer like Giacchino is....the right fit somehow. It would be interesting though.

I assume you're talking about mgm's post. I'm not yet sure if he's being facetious or not.

He's often called the heir to Williams. I do love his music, especially his scores to Medal of Honor. I think, in the right environment, he could do it. Just like Mark Griskey could. Or Don Davis. But I think if he's available, and he's willing, then that's probably what will happen, and I do want to know what he could add to his already-vast library of themes from the originals.

If the new films continue the story, from the original, then it would be interesting to hear the evolution of the original thematic material, true.

I like that Giacchino is all for some more Williams music:

As much as I hate the Guy. I can understand Why He would keep John Williams as Music Composer to Star Wars.

Unlike the Star Trek Films Who NEVER had a Set composer in all of the Films. The Star Wars Films DOSE, & from what I understand one of the Reasons for how bad His Trek Films were so bad was because Abrams IS a Star Wars Fan, He never Saw or got Himself familiar with TREK in His LIFE! (*Is it any wonder that His TREK Films played out like Michael Bay-esc Star Wars Films*)

So as far as He's concerned, Why mess with a Star Wars FILM tradition?

The latest installment of the Star Trek series which was launched recently..sucked completely i guess...it lacked that thrill and the entertainment which the other parts were known for..

The films never made it close to THAT level of atrocity. It seems to me that a majority of the opposition to Abrams' Trek is coming from fans of the original who couldn't stand to see their vision of trek ruined or tainted. I enjoyed the films and at the same time I enjoyed the originals all the way up to and including Voyager. (Not DS9 or Enterprise...yuck!)

I think this situation is rather difficult to discern around the questions of what the music would and should sound like, though it is also nothing to worry about. Either way we are getting the most complex and developed music from either two of Williams or Giacchino. How about a collaboration :naughty: hmmm

Giacchino's Ode to Harrison and all the related material for Into Darkness were complex and boiling and bubbling in their build up, mixing the bars of the new Trek theme with Harrison's theme was brilliant!

Well, yes. Other composers have done so. Mark Griskey and Joel McNeely are constantly cited as possible people to take over who have worked on Star Wars before. Michael Giacchnio has been touted as the next John Williams, although how that would translate into Star Wars I haven't a clue. Don Davis might also be worth a shot should the inevitable happen to John Williams before he manages to complete a full trilogy.

I'd be pretty disappointed if anyone else scored SW...but I'm one of those old die hard "70s fans" I guess. I was born in 75. I'm also a trained musician, and for me hardly anyone else touches Williams. I was gutted when he left the Harry Potter series. I thought especially the 7th film (remember there were 8) was horribly affected by Williams' absence.

I had to question whether I wanted to participate in this discussion. Suffice it to say, I'm glad that they're keeping Williams around for the new trilogy. That guy's not going to be around forever, and he was the best part of the prequel movies. I like continuity in my movies, and Williams's music provides a great canvas to connect all these different directors' visions together. I'm also glad that the original trio will be making a cameo (Hamill-Fisher-Ford), because those guys won't be around forever, either. It's nice to enjoy them while they're still around, and we all know that it will be the last time they ever get to work together.

As much as I enjoy Giacchino's music (and J.J. Abrams, to an extent), yes, I am glad Williams is composing for Episode VII. I've said my piece, I'm out.
