The world premiere was composed and recorded by the National Schools Symphony Orchestra http://www.chorum.co.uk/NSSO%202012%20track%20list.qxd.pdf,

Impressions of America is a symphonic composition by Scottish film composer Patrick Doyle. His inspiration for this Original Soundtrack comes from his relationship with America, travelling back and forth from Scotland and Hollywood.
The Soundtrack consists of fiftheen cues, which he composed over the years in his career as a film composer, gives a nostalgic look at America. The landscapes, traditions and it's people.
Scored for and recorded with a full symphony orchestra, Varse Sabrande releases film composer Patrick Doyle's Impressions of America to celebrate the composer's 60th birthday in April of 2013.

Amazon analyzes track by track this tour symphonic Doyle: My Impressions of Patrick Doyle's "Impressions of America" April 24, 2013 by The Wileyman

01. "Washington DC" is a stately brass fanfare, reminiscent of some of John Williams's Americana cues. It seems to be inspired perhaps more by the city's history than current political wrangling, full of inspiring harmonies. A fitting opening to the album.

02. "Pumpkin Pie" - a short, whimsical piece driven by piano and woodwinds, supported by gentle strings

03. "Christmas in NY" - a wistful woodwind solo, supported by chimes, opens the piece; then joined by piano & light percussion, it becomes playful & joyful. To me, the cue evokes a snowy Christmas in rural, pastoral New York Sate rather than the busyness of New York City

04. "Transcontinental Railroad" is a busy cue, with metallic percussion. It sounds like music for a "construction" or "traveling" montage; it builds in the opening minute but does not develop much after that, never quite reaching a climax.

05. "The Great Depression" opens with somber strings, joined by a plaintive piano melody. It's melancholy but ends on a slightly hopeful final chord ***

06. "Mount Rushmore" follows a traditional Americana approach: an opening trumpet solo, echoed by a horn, followed by strings & winds; overall a bit too restrained, and doesn't quite reach a satisfying climax

07. "Prairie Sunrise" - Strings, winds, and warm brass evoke the gentleness of a morning breeze blowing over the prairie grass.

08. "Winter in Alaska" - Piano and bells, along with fluttering strings and woodwinds, transport us to a landscape of frigid beauty with sunlight glinting on ice and snow

09. "Decaying City" - Solemn strings and eerie percussion evoke the empty shell of a city. There's only a very brief hint of the warmth of better days long gone by.

10. "Yosemite" Turns from dead urban landscapes in a tribute to the beauty of nature. Playful piano, strings, and winds open the piece. A leaping, dancing middle section depicts Yosemite's famous geyser, and the piece concludes with a more stately passage dwindling quietly before resolving.

11. "Death Valley" - lurking strings and rattling percussion open the piece, with creeping woodwinds and slow crescendos leading to dissonant brass chords that resolve into hopeful melodic snatches; noodling, eerie strings and unsettling percussion return and fade to the end. Perhaps not a pleasant listen, but it successfully conjures images of a scorched desert wasteland.

12. "Rushing Rapids" - Descending string patterns support and propel the rising and falling melody. An enjoyable cue, capturing the flow of some of America's more turbulent rivers. After a couple of listens, this has become one of my favorite cues on the album. *****

13. "The Great Plains" - A noble brass melody supported by guitar, joined by rising strings; it has a classic Americana sound, but is also infused with Doyle's melodic touch - noble, inspiring, but a tad wistful at the same time. It calls to mind scenes of "amber waves of grain" and feelings of hope and aspiration to goodness and nobility. Just what I was hoping for when I bought the CD. I think it should have served as the album's conclusion.

14. "Old Glory" - Is a calm and reflective piece; it is noble and respectful, not brash patriotism. A brief but good cue, although the ending is a little sudden and lacking in resolution.

15 "Thanksgiving" - A stark opening - perhaps inspired by the leafless trees of late November - leads into a piece that is enjoyable but slightly subdued. It reminds me of the end of the Thanksgiving meal, when everyone is full and content. I think the ending is a little too abrupt and, as the final cue, it doesn't serve the album well. I would have placed it after "Washington DC" to form a Thanksgiving/Christmas trilogy along with "Pumpkin Pie" and "Christmas in NY." Pumpkin Pie works well coming directly after it. As the album's conclusion, this piece earns, but when placed as the second track it earns.

Thank you so much for this, Lockdown and KevinG.
I really love Doyle's film music but would have been reluctant to buy this one without listening to it in advance. And now that I've just listened to the whole thing I can really say that it is a very lovely cd and I'm going to order a copy in the next few days to put next to the rest of my Doyle collection on the shelf. A very worthwhile 45 minutes. Thanks again, guys.
