I suppose that Trapanese did the same thing (arrangements) he did with Daft Punk on Tron Legacy... But for sure, the main composer is M83 only, no way Elfman got involved in the composition, maybe he "helped" and gave some advices as Zimmer did for Tron legacy...

simple answer: not every mp3 player plays m4a files.
People with old mp3 players have only mp3 support.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with quality but with compatibility.

By the way, this soundtrack is fantastic! It's as if the score to Inception and the score to TRON: Legacy had sex and out came the score to Oblivion. Seriously, TRON had to be used as temp tracks for the film, because there are bits that sound exactly the same. Anyway, great stuff from M83.

So I was looking at the iTunes booklet, we shouldn't be giving M83 so much credit.

M83 is Anthony Gonzalez's band; the only credit they get is for the title track for performing on it. The title track was written and produced by Anthony Gonzalez. (Suzanne Sundfor also gets a writing credit for the lyrics probably.) Arranged and orchestrated by Trapanese.

The score is entirely composed and produced by Gonzalez and Trapanese.

That's the track info I'm talking about.

The "Mastered for iTunes" logo should be on the top right hand corner next to the track's main info. Since it's not there, I guess that this soundtrack wasn't mastered for iTunes. The one for Les Miserables was (the AAC iTunes version of it anyway). If you happen to have that one and do the "track info" on that, you'll see what I mean.

So, I have to say, saw the film today. While I wasn't to thrilled with the score, the film is flat out fantastic. Well worth the price of admission. My only regret was I couldn't see it in IMAX.

There are ways to remove that info. Any time I upload iTunes purchased music, I always remove my info. It's a wonder how people forget to do this stuff.

Yeah, BMI IMAX is about an hour train ride from my house, but the theater is right outside the trainstation (Waterloo.). It's a great theater. Do you have AMC's 'LIEMax' theaters by you? The film was good, but not worth spending the money on LIEMax. NO film is worth seeing in LIEMax.

I have only seen one film on true IMAX... That was TDKR... We went and visited family Labor Day weekend & there is a true IMAX like 10-20 minutes from my grandpa's house... So I took advantage of the situation :)

I've seen the movie twice, pretty sure it is as well, it doesn't do the half assed job of repeating the same piece of music in the movie for different scenes, and the movie it 2 hours and 6 minutes in length, this released score is 1 hour, 53 minutes and change, can't remember any bits that were in the movie not in the film - think there's a couple that have been clipped here and there in the movie though for effect of a scene.

So I assume the complete release is only exclusive lossy ala iTunes, no lossless?

was lucky to download this before my internet provider fucked me over (using my phone atm). This is some score. At first i was very skeptical about listening as the similarities with Daft Punks Tron are uncanny. You would have thought they made the score. However putting all of the slight nip picking to side, this is actually a very fine score. One that grows on you and needs to be listened in full for a very smooth a relaxing listen. Tron was another score i wasnt fond of from the beginning, and slowly but surely i found room for it. With scores like this, love is blind!

My guess:
"Original music by M83" means the ending song (with Susanne Sundfor) was written and played by the band M83
"Score composed by Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese" means the whole other 29 tracks were writtent by both of them.

Sadly all those sites like iTunes, Amazon, Wikipedia... attribute the score to M83 only. Whereas Trapanese touch is blatant through the whole score and he isn't only credited as an "arranger" as he was on Daft Punk's Tron Legacy score.

If M83 as a whole are only responsible for "Oblivion", then what's going on in this video? "Oblivion" has no drums in it like what's going on in this "drum battle", as it's called. So I do think they are involved in the score as well. Plus the credits on all the films posters say "Original Score by M83" (How convenient that I can't find one now)

Many thanks. I am a little disappointed by how much they sampled Tron and Zimmer's recent works, was really hoping they would stamp their own personal style on it, but alas, a decent score nonetheless.

Pitchfork: On the album cover for the soundtrack, it reads "original music by M83" and then "composition with Joe Trapanese and Anthony Gonzalez." Do you have boundaries set for "Anthony Gonzalez, the composer" and "M83"?
AG: I would have pushed for "Anthony Gonzalez and Joe Trapanese," because for me, this is how the score was done. I didn't want to involve M83 in that, but it's hard because Universal wanted to push M83 because of the success of "Midnight City". It's funny because sometimes big studios don't give a shit about you, but when you're nominated for the Grammys, you start receiving emails like, "Oh, congratulations. We're excited about the soundtrack." I'm like, "You didn't give a shit about me two months ago when I got the job, and now you're just acting like a ..." It makes you feel like there's something wrong with the movie industry-- you can write that, I don't care.

Thanks for this. My thoughts since the beginning. All the sites labbeling the score only to M83 are wrong as Trapanese deserves half the credit. However, the last track and single "Oblivion" is M83 only, plus Trapanese is only mentionned as an arranger on this track.

That's sad Gonzalez hasn't been so happy in the process though.

I have no idea who M83 is.
It's not something I would look out for or download or even get involved with on their social sites.

So AG is only one of several people from M83?
I had to Wiki M83 because I'm not "hip" with the times.
