The Violin Concerto, op.24 is without a doubt Mikls Rzsa's most popular, and
most often recorded/performed, concert work. Originally composed for the leading virtuoso of
his time, Jascha Heifetz (whose 1956 recording is still considered the reference version
by many), it enjoyed a second life as a film score. Billy Wilder so loved this piece that he asked
Rzsa to adapt it for the score of his 1969 The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.

Included in this upload are a recent recording of the piece, by English violinist Matthew Trusler
(whose broader tempi let the music breathe in a way that Heifetz's razzle-dazzle didn't), the piano reduction
of the score (prepared by the composer himself for Breitkopf & Hrtel), the isolated violin part of
that score (both as PDFs), and the Nic Raine recording of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
as released by Silva.

Jascha Heifetz's recording of the work is not considered the 'reference piece' it is considered the finest version of this concerto. Billy Wilder considered the slow movement to epitomize the loneliness of Sherlock Holmes and requested the work be interpolated for the film. Rozsa plays a small cameo in the orchestra within the film. The re-recording of the full score always struck me as lackluster... which is what usually happens with re-recordings. ;-)

Rozsa's Suite from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes that is part of a number of suites on the iconic Polydor recordings is passionate, dynamic and triumphant. The original tapes for these disappeared long ago which is why I had the LPs transferred to CD by a masterful soundtech. Rozsa conducts Rozsa and Miklos Rozsa Great Film Music I posted here many moons ago... a search may find them though I doubt the links still work.
