My b-day's comin' up and me wantee a few anime DVDs. There are a few I have in mmind but have no clue about whther or not they're any good. Would anyone who has seen them, give me your verdict on them please? They are:

Amon Saga
Kai-Doh Maru
Landlock
Neon Genesis Evangelion (What's the best one to start me off?)
Ray Earth
Red Hawk
Shadow Skill
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter Alpha
Tokyo Revelation
X

also, would anyone recommend me a good fantasy (or 3:D)? similar to an RPG stoyline.

Thanx

EDIT: Of course I'm not gonna get them all, I just want a good selection to choose from.

I can't give you real advice, because I've not seen any of those series... Some bits of Evangelion, but it's not my cup of tea so I like to ignore it.

But I've read a very entertaining (aka, very very negative) review about Amon Saga.

Hmm. I'm taking it most of that is from Manga Entertainment? Well, most of their stuff is incredibly dodgy rubbish. :) So avoid it. With the excpetion on Evangelion (which I'm fairly sure is not done by them) and maybe Kai-Doh Maru, which looks fairly neat.

Where are you getting it from? Forbidden Planet?

Kuro

Yup, I was browsing www.manga.co.uk (the only place I know of that has loads of movies and info). Yeah, FP or online.

They're all (cept Evangelion) movies, not series Misao. Series cost too much money

Tokiko

Doesn't matter whether their series or movies, I still don't know them except for some reviews or pictures, so my advice stays the same. :)

Now that I think about it... X isn't too bad, but it's mostly depressing, and a bit crap if you haven't read the manga and what not. And Ray Earth isn't supposed to be too bad, but once again, Manga suck. Go for some of Evangelion and maybe Kai-Doh Maru. Though that might not be any good, either.

I certainly like the packaging. :)

So I'm just re-iterating what I said earlier, basically.

The thing about the NGE movies are that they all have to do with explaining the very end of the series, since the series ran out of funding in the final stretch. As such, none of the NGE movies would make too much sense without seeing the series first. Just my opinion, though.

He's talking about the Evangelion series. ;)

I was just reading a review of Kai-Doh Maru on www.ukanime.com and it seems pretty shit. It's only fucking 38mins!!!! Definately not enough time for plot which is what I'm really after.

X seems pretty good so I've decided to get that. But the question remains, what shall accompany it?

On second though, I'm not buying any in Forbidden Planet, they're a rip off when it comes to animes. Akira: FP - E40+, HMV E30+. VHS: FP - E16+ Manga.co.uk - 2.99. I'm just gonna order them off the net.

03-15-2004, 05:45 PM
lol, don't get X if you're after plot. Your understanding of the movie is pretty reliant on having seen/read the rest of it, so it will just suck without that.

I guess Kai-Doh Maru does suck... eh, just go for Evangelion. ;)

Kuro

I just want good anime. I'd like plot mainly but action is good too. Whatever, as long as I'm entertained and will come back for more

You may think I'm a dunce for asking this but what does OAV (not OAP!) stand for?

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the greatest anime series ever. It's twenty-six episodes long, there are movies that serve as an alternate ending(NGE:Death, Rebirth, Death & Rebirth, and End of Evangelion; each are just different versions of the same movie), two director's cut editions (NGE:Resurrection and Genesis Reborn; Resurrection is a remake of episodes 21-23 and Genesis Reborn is a remake of episodes 24-26 both of which were under the careful supervision of Hideaki Anno himself, the director and mecha designer), and a manga series, by character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, which is a retelling of the tv series.
The story is about a boy who believes he is worthless and hates himself, a 29-year-old woman who pretends to be friends with everyone but really isn't in reality, a girl who rejects the world because she thinks she isn't accepted by it, another girl who accepts the fact that there is no point in living, and a man who shoves everyone away from him to accomplish his goals. Everyone in this series is mentally sick and seemingly incapable of living normally because of their fears and their attempts to become happy; what they really do is try to escape from an unacceptable reality. The series is full of tension, angst, psychology, and reality(especially the last two episodes).
You can buy each DVD at Suncoast, some Gamestop stores, and other retailers for usually $26.99-$29.99 (the box sets cost around $120). The manga version can be found in Suncoast for $14.99 (at least for the special collector's edition).

Bro, I recommend the Samurai X OVA series. They're full of action and has good storyline.

Kuro

nah, I want movies not series. what does OAV stand for?

Tokiko
03-16-2004, 02:21 PM
Original Video Animation. OVA. OAV means the same.
It means that the anime in question was produced for a direct release on video or DVD, not for TV or for cinema.

X TV, isn't it? it's alright
I would choose Neon Genesis Evangelion.

you mean a RPG-based anime?? .hack//sign, it's good =P

Kuro
03-16-2004, 08:53 PM
by RPG-esque i mean more in the sense that the story evolves into bigger things along the way. e.g., In FFVII Cloud started off on a simple hire mission for a lil resistance group and ended up saving the earth (after going through a lot of shit first)

hmmm...wel as I said before, I'm not really looking for series, It's movies that I want. Series cost too much money, so I wouldn't be able to get the whole series and I'd be said then:(

I know you want rpg ones but the love hina specials are such a laugh!!

You could try the Utena movie, or the escaflowne movie, both are supposed to rock.

My roomate owns Amon Saga. Maybe I'll watch it tonight if I get the chance- then I can tell you what I think.

Evangelion is great, and I can definitely recommend that one.

Have you seen the Spriggan movie yet? I'd definitely recommend that. Great action, solid story, all around entertaining.

I saw a new NGE DVD out last time I was at the local video store that stocks anime. Called Resurrection, supposedly a "director's cut" of the End of Evangelion movies, and part 1, at that.

Anyone heard of that one?

Oh, and as for a DVD out of the series itself to start off with, go with Collection 0:2, the one that introduces Asuka. That's the funniest one out of the bunch, as well as having some decent battles in it.

Thanx Ndi (aka World's Best Sis)

Odin: I'll check up on it, thanx.

I've been hearing some very good things about a film called Dragon Half, anyone know much about it? It certainly sounds good.

Marceline
03-17-2004, 05:03 PM
Dragon Half is entertaining, but I don't know if it's what you're looking for.

It's a pretty goofy, silly, funny anime, and not so much anything with a deep story.

I remember it being two or three episodes long when I saw it though, so maybe the movie is different?

Kuro
03-17-2004, 05:11 PM
I know it's suppose to be funny, need a good comedy anime. I'm just generaly looking for good anime.

Marceline
03-17-2004, 05:14 PM
In that case, I think you'd like it. It's the kind of thing that'll put you in a really silly mood, but I like that sort of thing.

Kuro

Me too. Ultimate Muscle is pretty stupid, so it's pretty funny. The only series I ever get to follow are that and Dragonball

Evangelion is really good. I saw Tokyo Revelation a while ago and it was suprisingly entertaining. Don't expect great show though. Probably the only reason why I liked it was because I thought it was going to be horrible. I have seen a few episodes of Rayearth and I thought it was okay, though a little girly, but there is nothing wrong with that. I have also seen Kai Doh Maru and it was indeed very short, but it was sweet. the plot was not to indepth, but it was good. If you want to get a lot of the anime your looking for you could buy bootleg anime. It is really cheap, but there could be a moral thing involved since the people that make the anime receive no compensation. IM me if you would consider since you can buy the entire Eva series for 21 dollars on DVD dubbed in english. Some may say I'm evil, but I am only poor.

Now and Then, Here and There is an awesome anime. I highly recommend it.

I've only been able to locate four DVD's, but it's just incredible.

Seen a bit of it. Its about a boy and a girl that he must protect. Thats all I know. Am I correct?

That's on one of the DVD's, so far it's been about a bunch of different characters in the same world. They all meet up and start working together eventually, I think, but I haven't seen that far.

Basically, it's a world in total chaos, and certain individuals working together (or striking out on their own) in a bid for survival.

It's pretty deep/dramatic, just watch it.

now and then here and there is a 13 episode series. i think there is only 3 dvds, the fourth being extras for a box set i think. Anyway, yeah it is really good. One of my favs actually.

Well I just got a fair amount of babysittin money (my uncles/aunties are too rich and stupid for their wallets/purses:p) so I just placed an order for:

Patlabor 1
Patlabor 2
Shadow Skill
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter Alpha
The Guyver - Data:1-12 <- 3 tapes

All on VHS (only 2.99-3.99 each).

But I'd still like a few suggestions for DVDs for mah B-Day. I'm goin' anime crazy lately, gotta extend my pitiful 3 film collection (well, including that order 12)

Shadow Skill is cool. You gonna love it.

I still recommend the Samurai X OVA series (3 of them). And if you like dark mystery occult anime, I recommend Darker Descendant.

Two of them. And I only recommend one of them. Stay away from Reflections. If you are a Kenshin fan, because the whole thing has nothing to do with how the real story is supposed to end. If you don't know the TV series or the manga at all, it makes even less sense to watch this. Nononono, just stay away from this crap.

Okay, thanx for the tip M

I'll have a lil looksee on the 'net for some info and reviews just to see, but if it looks or seems as bad as you say, I definately won't get it. I probably won't have a look either unless it seems/looks spectacular

You're are wanting suggestions for anime movies right?

Have you ever seen Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust? That is a really good movie.
It has a great storyline, beautiful animation, and excelent music.
I don't know if you prefer English dubbed or the original Japanese version, but the dubbing for this movie is a A+ as well.

Does that help?
Oh! A really good thriller anime film is Perfect Blue *shudder*

I thought of another one! *Tee-hee*

Princess Monoke is an amazing movie! I love it.
