Many thanks for this Yannis. I didn't dislike the score actually used by Addison but I thought Herrmann's rejected one was more suitably menacing
and bleak for the Cold War era.

That's quite true. And the Greek word Φοίνιξ can be traced back to the Egyptian bnw (boinu, “grey heron”). The grey heron was venerated at Heliopolis and associated in Egypt with the cyclical renewal of life because the bird rises in flight at dawn and migrates back every year in the flood season to inhabit the Nile waters.

The Egyption culture, of course, was heavily influenced by visitors from Outer Space, who were some of my ancestors, the immortal Q! :)
