Thanks; so far, this seems to me an interesting change in direction for Chris Tilton - the last game soundtracks I remember him compsing for being Black and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

The soundtrack as a whole stays very true to the SimCity formula, that much is great.

Well, from what I've read, the only thing damning the game is the online functionality. All other components seem to add to a very good game. I'll definitely buy it when it's on sale.

Erm, you converted that yourself?

And even so...does it sound any different? Honestly, no they don't. Both codecs sound exactly the same - I have converted from .m4a to .mp3, from .ogg to .mp3 plenty of times. Not once have I noticed an actual downgrade in audio fidelity. Yes, by all technicalities AAC is "better". But if your ear can't tell the difference, then who cares?

Your ears will always be the best scale of standards for any codec.

You are right, Chris Tilton clearly has the same string writing approach of Giacchino, he is the padawan of Jedi master Giacchino after all... While the game wouldn't suggest it, the music here is very enjoyable and melodic, not at all ambient like you would expect, except maybe for the Night mixes. A track such as 'The Long Construction' is just plain awesome in its build-up.
