Review by Jason Ankeny ~ Allmusic

Isham's soundtrack to the Alan Rudolph drama Afterglow is typical of his film work, a moody and frequently moving record distinguished by his signature trumpet sound; his support unit includes saxophonist Charles Lloyd, vibist Gary Burton, violinist Sid Page, bassist Jeff Littleton, pianist Geri Allen and drummer Billy Higgins.

~ Cduniverse

Composer/trumpeter Mark Isham's music for the Alan Rudolph-directed film AFTERGLOW is more a collection of moods than merely a soundtrack. Utilizing such jazz luminaries as Gary Burton, Charles Lloyd, Geri Allen and Billy Higgins, Isham has assembled an ensemble of great sensitivity to produce a painting of dark blues and smoky grays. Like the film, the score evokes the longing that comes from lost love. In the leader's trumpet, Burton's vibraphone and Lloyd's saxophone we can make out the strains of regret over a relationship that has gone astray. From the darkness of "Yeses, Noes And In-Betweens" and "A Life Suspended" to the light of "Hope And Charity," we share in the emotions of the film's characters through the expressive playing of Lloyd, Burton and violinist Sid Page. Things start to churn with "For Charles" as the players begin to swing in earnest. Billy Higgins keeps the undercurrents moving through "Undecided" and then the dam breaks open with "The Frenzy." Original music composed by Mark Isham. Includes liner notes by Alan Rudolph. Recording information: Conway Studios. Photographer: Joyce Rudolph. Arranger: Mark Isham. Entertainment Weekly (1/30/98, p.65) - "...[AFTERGLOW benefits] from the inspired contributions of saxophonist Lloyd, pianist Geri Allen, vibist Gary Burton, and violinist Sid Page as well as Isham's own Miles Davis-like trumpeteering, elevating this affecting score into a near masterwork of bittersweet mood and texture."
Down Beat (3/98, pp.58-59) - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "...this CD clearly bears the signs of dedicated musicianship....[Isham's] trumpet solos and compositions are testimonies to the lost art of understatement....Isham's songwriting, attention to detail and choice of musicians are outstanding..."
