THE BOOK

In 1967, a book was published that roused the hearts and minds of the world...“Doctor Zhivago”.

Its author, ‘Boris Pasternak', was one o of the few survivors of a generation that gave Russia its great 20th century poets - Blok, Essenin, and Mayakovsky.

His poems had given him a considerable reputation in the world of letters and his translations of Shakespeare's plays are considered the “most outstanding” and “popular” in the Russian language.

“Doctor Zhivago” was the first original work published by ‘Pasternak' after 25-years of silence. When he broke that silence he was hailed as a “literary genius” in the West...and denounced as a “traitor” in his own country.

In 1968, ‘Pasternak' was awarded the “Nobel” prize for Literature, and with this award came the threats and humiliations which were to force ‘Pasternak' to reject the prize.

The Soviet Writer's Association expelled him. Authorities warned that his departure from Russia would mean permanent exile...Why?

Because “Doctor Zhivago” is a vision of a man who can find no comforting ideologies, slogans, religion, or government to explain his existence and give his life “meaning”.

Zhivago's cause is, simply, survival against circumstances that threaten to annihilate him.

He wants only a place to write and a woman to love...He wants no great role in a great revolution or a great war. His damning crime is wanting to be “ordinary”, wanting to be himself...

THE MUSIC

Brilliant young French composer ‘Maurice Jarre' has written the beautiful, exciting, and sensual film music for “Doctor Zhivago”.

As with most men of genuine talent, ‘Maurice Jarre' is modest about his work.

Among his impressive musical credits are the film scores for “The Longest Day”, “The Train”, “The Collector”, as well as David Lean's film “Lawrence of Arabia”, which won him an ACADEMY AWARD.

His score for “Doctor Zhivago” is one of his greatest achievements.

The music includes Russian folk tunes remembered from his childhood, as well as an extensive collection of Soviet marches, songs, ballads and dance tunes.

From the hauntingly lovely "Lara" theme to the violent themes of war and revolution, Jarre's score brilliantly captures the scope, the intimacy, the passion of “Doctor Zhivago”.

The recording was accomplished with the largest and most unique combination of musical instruments ever assembled in a Hollywood studio for the purpose.

Conducting is ‘Maurice Jarre' himself, and for the 10-day session, he used a full symphony orchestra of 110 pieces, a special group of 24 balalaika musicians, a section of Japanese instruments, including a ‘Shamisen' (a long-necked banjo, with a little tom-tom on bridge), a ‘Koto' (7-foot Japanese harp), a 6-foot ‘gong' valued at US$3,000.00 (at that time), organ, novachord, electric sonovax, harpsichord, electric piano, tack piano. and zither.

For portions of the score, the instrumental music was augmented by a chorus of 40 voices.

A total of 20 microphones were used to record the full score for 6-channel stereo, and a staff of six sound men were involved.

Working closely with Jarre on instrumentation were ‘Leo Arnaud' (orchestrator and arranger), ‘Lou Raderman' (concertmaster), and ‘Monique Rollin' (distinguished zither artist with the Paria Music Research Center).

The result is a recording that evokes the power and the beauty of a true motion picture “epic”.

I've been looking for a decent copy of this for a while. You'd think, being such a significant score in Jarre's repertoire, it would be easier to come by. Thanks for closing the gap on this one!

New link for the L.P. Record on the first post, please note that due to its age, the quality is not the highest, in fact this the most damaged from my L.P. Collection, along with my Lawrence of Arabia Vinyl.

Anyway, I posted it because it contains (for me) the most lovely "Lara's Theme" version, although it's an arrangement, not heard on the film, enjoy!
