Ok, so a few years back, I started playing FFXII on my PS3, with no problems. I stopped playing, and recently I decided I wanted to go back and take care of some unfinished business? But, when I do so, I am shocked to find out that I no longer can access the main menu nor can I get the map screen. Come to find out that there was some controller issue on the PS2 with this game. I know about that. But, I googled and googled, but I can't find anything that pertains to the issue on the PS3. I started playing the game on the PS3, I didn't transfer it. I had both of those screens working when I started it, but now, this issue just now shows up? The best I can think of is one of the many updates has changed the settings, perhaps. But it beats me. Anyone else have this particular problem, and perhaps, a solution?

Yeah, I remember the controller/memory card issue with FFXII - but that's the first I've heard having issues with it running on a PS3. All I can think of is your PS3 controller possibly might be uncallibrated - if you're using a USB cable with it the cable might have become slightly unplugged. From what I remember, when the system is first booting up, you shouldn't touch any buttons or the analog sticks, as this is when the system is callibrating the controller. In any event, shut down your PS3, unplug and then replug the controller, and turn it back on, and see if that helps.

Otherwise, all I can suggest is maybe invest in a new PS2? They're not exactly pricy nowadays.

Hmm... I don't use the cable. I just use the wireless controller. But, I will check to see if it needs re-calibrated. I checked the settings when I was playing it, and it was listed as Analog, A1. Not sure if that's a factor.

I also tried playing FFVII. It went to the main menu, but I couldn't do anything at all. I have the original PS3. I believe it should be able to play both PS2 and PS1 games, am I mistaken? I know later models dodged backwards compatibility, so maybe with later updates, that started to factor in. I dunno....

Owner of an European PS3 60 GB model, and a PS3 Slim 320 GB one... Both forcibly updated with the latest Firmware update. The issue you've described isn't happening on either model, here (Later models disabled PS2 compatibility only, PS1 titles work on every PS3). The "problem" happens only with PS2/PS1 games? The thing with these goddamn consoles is that a problem could have multiple causes:

- It could be just an issue with the controller.
- Something may have gotten screwed up during download/installation of the Firmware update (Personal experience: I could play and save data just fine, but whenever the system prompted me to download an update of any sort.... Game Patch... Store... Home... the console would shutdown by itself. I had to use recovery mode to repair the filesystem and rebuild the system data storage).
- Lens/Drive may need to be calibrated.
