Right off the bat, tracks #15 and #51 should be swapped. Track #51 is the actual version of "Win the Crowd", while track #15 is actually the alternate. Track #51 (the real one, not the alternate) is the OST version of "Strength & Honor"

I know you said you wanted input, that's what I got so far. Thanks for sharing

DAKoftheOTA
02-07-2013, 06:29 AM
I'm too tired to figure it out, but something doesn't match up. On HZ.com "Win the Crowd" "Reunion" and "Slaves to Rome" are all edited together as they're heard in the film, yet there's 57 tracks on each of these. Meaning there's 2 additional tracks on the one listed on HZ.com

Amanda
02-07-2013, 06:36 AM
Does not mean there has or has not been editing done, on one or the other. If they are listed as edited together as a film edit, then ...dunno. I do not think the raw sessions would come that way.

DAKoftheOTA
02-07-2013, 06:40 AM
And they don't. But what I'm saying is that's how it's listed on HZ, yet you guys say the track numbers add up. If that's the case, then this one is missing 2 cues. Because if three tracks are edited into one, where are the other two? Someone will figure it out...

There are not 57 on HZ.com. 19, 16, and 18 tracks. So 53 tracks at HZ, and 57 on this, since the tracks are not edited together, but more likely in the as was stage. All the music is the same aside from the edited tracks. On the 53 set, Elysium, Honor Him, Now We Are Free are listed as one also.

I think that the only track missing in this version is the shorter Gladiator Waltz from the partial recording sessions. In fact that short cue is just the begining of the full demo, but without the dialogue. I guess that someone with editorial skill could even made a the full track without dialogue combining both.

Thank you again for this edition, Amanda!

ive noticed some artefacts in the sound. especially 'elysium', 'honor him' and 'now we are free' which sound identical to the what kgray upped. Some of these tracks seem like they could have been up-converted to mp3 vbr where originally was 192kps. i could be wrong though, but it sure does seem that way.

Or...the other was downconverted from this... :) I can say the other set ids the real thing, just not all of it. This is all of it. As for a missing source cue, most times source cues don't appear as part of the score set. i know for a fact that this was not a re-encoding of kgray's set. I cannot tell you who what or why, just that it is definitely not.

No apologies. I am interested in the discussion, though I am a bit.....bemused. It seems no matter what gets posted, be it from Mr. Zimmer himself, there will always be misgivings. Would artifacts not be normal for a mp3 set? And on my 20 dollar system, I am not even sure what an artifact should sound like? (no headphones atm either)

Of course compression artifacts are normal in all mp3 but for something with an average vbr bitrate of 236 the artifacts shouldn't be as noticeable as they are heard here. That's why I thought up was upconverted originally.

How do you know if there are artifacts? Can you hear this? How does it sound (like little clicks or... i don't know)?
Or do you analyze the track with Audity or another sound program?

Don't get me wrong but I don't hear anything "unnormal" and I don't know where to look to identify artifacts. Maybe you can help? :)

Try track 1 at around 9:06 and 10:05 respectively -- anything sound amiss to you?

On an unrelated note, I've noticed that "Figurines (Alternate 1)" is the same as "Maximus" on the "More Music from Gladiator" album.

Actually, no. I hear nothing but music. But, I have no headphones, and a very cheap sysstem. Recently upgraded to a 30 dollar set with a subwoofer, but that's it, and I hear no oddness. The question was WHAT you hear at those points?

I think what you are referring to is film mix dialing down and back up, to accomadate dialogue, or a pause in action, perhaps. sync it up to a scene in the movie. That might help clear it up.

I would not say you were crazy. Just that i do not here it. But, like I keep saying I have a fairly smallish system, and there is a lot of surrounding noise from neighbors etc. So, just because I don't hear it does not mean you don't.....which is why I ask, so I know what y'all are discussing.

if you listen very carefully (using headphones) on tracks 'Elysium' and 'Honor Him' specifically, you can hear at the begining like a metalic ringing sound during the soft strings and quiet moments. Sometimes its not noticeble during loud music but when things quiten down it stands right out especially during string, symbols and bell moments in music. Take two images for example. One crystal clear high resolution and the other pixelated (Which is the compressed image). Its the same for sound!

The best thing you could do is rip a track in to bitrates. One at 320kps and the other at 128kps and compare the two. An orchestral piece would be the best to use.

Well, I've downloaded this new version, and as far as I know, this are the recording sessions that have been circling around for some time now and that finally reached their way to the forum recently... (courtesy of kgray) The only difference that there is between both -and a difference that I really appreciate- is that quality is so much much much better in this one than the other!! Reason why it's worth the download and a big thank you!

The so-said collection of alternates and demos and such are either the same that were already available in the previous version or the additional tracks that were featured in the official soundtrack 'More Music From Gladiator' (that 'Gladiator Waltz' track even has the bridged beginning of the previous track and the dialogue!!!)... In the end, this gives me the idea that this has been put together by someone who already had the sessions, but at a better quality, and mixed with those tracks to compile a 'definite' or 'ultimate' or 'really complete' or 'are you not entertained?' version... :P

What I should add, though... and I'm not saying this to spoil the party (after all, this is a magnificent version!!!!)... is that there are still a few tracks missing. I don't know what's the deal with Zimmer's scores, but they always get messy!! For instance, since 2000, Gladiator has had two official releases, about half a dozen bootleg versions -many of which were fanmade-, and now finally after twelve years we have access to the recording sessions... and still, it remains to be completed!!!! :P What the heck??!!

Thanks for sharing, Amanda, though!! Now we can all enjoy it in a much better quality!!! :D
Best regards!!!

After checking the spectrum of all the tracks, it appears that there is a frequency cut-off at 16 kHz.....
A cut off means everything gets cut. I checked some tracks and especially the action tracks contain information above 16KHz.

The encoder decides (based on the psychacoustic model) which info gets thrown away. A cut off at 16KHz is not proof of 128kbps transcoding.

If there is no valuable information above 16KHz, it gets thrown away. Thats how it is handled by LAME even with -V0 or -b 320. Please see this

Humm okay... but so how can we know the bitrate by analysing the spectrum ? (if it is possible)

Usually impossible. On some extreme cases you might be able to tell by looking at the spectrum that something is fishy.

If someone messes with the command line he can make the spectrum look better(disable low pass filter), while the perceived quality got worse.

For those who posted missing cues, can you tell me where you put them in regards to the rest of the tracklist? I am not as familiar with the cues you guys posted, but would love to add in the missing cues so I can finally have a definitive version of this score. Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide. And a huge thanks to Amanda for posting this!

This is my own "definitive" version -
59 - The Campus (Source).mp3 according chronological order would be between tracks 2 and 3.

I hope Amanda won't mind me doing this, but over the weekend I took the liberty of editing and compiling her very good upload into a version that very closely matches the edits of the movie.

You'll find it here:

Download links for themobisromefinaledit.rar - Mirrorcreator - Upload files to multiple hosts (http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/0REXZTUI/themobisromefinaledit.rar_links)

Now, as you'll see, I've removed all the alternates and unusued cues, just because I chose to file them somewhere else, not because they weren't interesting. I have, however, included both source cues, as they appear in the order of the movie.

I did change the names of some of the cues, first as a necessity, to reflect some of the edits I had to do, and then had to keep on doing it to maintain a semblance of logic. I hope you won't hold that against me!

Still missing is the movie version of Progeny/The Wheat, which is shorter than what we have, and most notably, the music that accompagnies Maximus out of the Coliseum after his fight with Tigris and his second face to face with Commodus, which is a slightly less heroic version of the tail end of "Barbarian Horde". Other than that, I don't know that there's that much more missing...

Anyway, I hope this gets taken the right way, and that is, as a thanks to Amanda for uploading this, and ending a 12 year wait for one of my favourite soundtracks! Thanks again!

... over the weekend I took the liberty of editing...

What does "editing" mean in this case? And how did you do it? It is after all a lossy source :) and yes, i know that there will be people that takes this as criticism, but it's not. I'm just curious and i AM downloading it to satisfy my curiosity. A true complete score as heard in the film is my dream as well...

In this case, I meant editing in the sense of organizing tracks to replicate the order of the movie, and splicing tracks together that belong together: for instance, Homecoming and Sorrow, the "alternate" ending of The Battle, which is actually the version used in the movie, Reunion and Slaves to Rome, and so on.

I did not, however, alter in any way the sound :) Lossy source it may be, but we can all be thankful for the best source we've ever had for this soundtrack!

So, how do you prefer it people ? edited or not ?... I don't think I care.

Hey Marco ! Guess what I'm going to do with this ? :) (Remember the last I threw you ;-)).

So far, the sound is correct. You can hear artifact compressions if you lift highs for instance, but ok. Too great it has been made vbr. Oh well, "background" music it is to me.

That's a very good question, and listening back on it now, that may have been an oversight on my part. I think the decision to edit "We Will Lie Still" and "Conspiracy" together might have had, as a consequence, the inadvertent dropping of "Scheming Commodus". That being said, I may have dropped it because I hadn't heard it in the movie itself, but don't quote me on that. Thanks for pointing it out, anyway, and good luck with your edit!

I highly doubt it, but you're not telling me it's film mixes - are you?? Because that's what a lot of people would consider "movie version". It'd be a shame if you label this as something that it's not.
