After a friend of mine was so lovely to share the Promo for 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' I decided to make a Deluxe Edition out of it. As its typical for Academy Promos the sound quality was relatively uneven. The Promo didnt appear to be mastered at all. It was not even really lossless which also is typical for Promos (for example: the promos for 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'). But in any case the quality was very high. Anyway, at first I tried to match the sound of the Promo to the official CD. But I instantly knew that the Promo was the better sounding CD - the official CD was quite in-your-face sonically. Sure it had lots of very deep bass and crisp treble but on the whole it was a bit unnerving and tiring. The Promo had just one problem: it wasnt mastered at all (meaning no matches in gain, volume, equalization, dynamics etc.). So I had to do that in order to turn it into a CD that sounds like an officially released disc. I ended up treating every track on its own which is something I never do (except on 'King Kong') simply because most of the time I wont need to: making it cohesive is one of the tasks of a mastering engineer. But this one wasnt mastered at all.

Anyway, I matched all tracks regarding their equalization and I also matched their gain (some tracks were way softer, others were louder) and I also reduced the dynamic a bit. The Promo wouldnt let you hear soft parts very well while on the other hand it exploded when the music got louder. While this is sounding very natural it doesnt make for a good listening experience. In fact, most soundtrack releases are treated with some slight dynamic compression before release so that they can be enjoyed better. And I dont mean 'Loudness War'! I just mean slight dynamic compression... dont worry, you wont notice it, its not disturbing. While Im at it... this release sounds warmer than the official CD or the Promo. It does have more sonic colour and dynamics while at the same time showing the same amount of resolution and detail as before (that was the trickiest part which took very long to figure out). I also corrected the stage, the stereo separation was too strong on the promo. I also erased some errors present on the bootleg and - as usual - combined several tracks into one. The overall sound was modeled on 'King Kong' a bit, I really think that this signature fits 'Atlantis' very nicely (Lost Island = Lost Empire). So dont worry, its complete, it just doesnt look that way.

And as usual, I couldnt decide what cover design to use. That one turned out trickier to do than I expected (exactly like the music) because I didnt seem to be able to find the right colours. Im not very happy with the result but I can accept it the way it is. In the archive youll find three different cover designs to choose from, all derived from very high-resolution pictures. There are also two different back covers. The overall theme of course was "water", therefore every cover looks blue/cyan tinted (just as with the official cover design (an updated version you can see above)) and the use of the letter "A" which you can find in nearly every picture. I also included the Atlantean alphabet, maybe you can find it ;)

Could you possibly do a deluxe edition for James Newton Howard's The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable? Those are the two most problematic releases I've found to work with. I can provide you with a good FLAC version for The Sixth Sense but you may have to do a bit of digging for the FLAC version of Unbreakable though I do know it exists, the links are just dead.

Maybe in a year or two... No, really. Id like to do Chamber of Secrets, Crystal Skull, Salt and Signs first. And I know the Sixth Sense bootleg: it cant be resuced, the quality is just horrible. I may have heard the boot of Unbreakable before... but the whole score wasnt particularly my cup of tea.

Not sure what you mean by The Sixth Sense sounding awful but to each his own. The problem I found was that some cues were mixed way too low but that was a problem that plagued the original album so I attribute it to the original source.

I did AVATAR a year or so ago (using the FYC as its source)... and I dont want to repeat that experience, Im sorry. Its not one of my favourite scores and working on it wasn't very pleasing. Furthermore my own version has become redundant since everything has been released. And Avatar sounds really very, very well in every version so a Deluxe Edition of mine is not necessary.

A question: Would you care to make a new thread collecting links to all your Deluxe Edition threads? Your portfolio is large already, and it would make a great resource for people like me who want to make sure we didn't miss anything and who want to be up-to-date on your work.

EDIT: Okay, searching for your started threads pretty much gives a good listing. But I still think it's a good idea.

Yes, I really appreciate feedback. Thing is, Im not entirely happy with this one. The sound still isnt what I wanted to achieve but it was the best I could do. And the music... well, now we know where some of the stuff from 'Avatar' came from, dont we? ;)

Two very interesting posts in a row. I had absolutely no idea he scored this, should be interesting to listen to considering how out of sync it is with what he usually scores. "A.I." I'm partially aware of, but I had no idea a 2 disc academy promo was doing the rounds. Just goes to show you that a complete, recording sessions or promo of pretty much every major score is circulating in the wilds of the web "to be treasured but never shared". Maybe we should start calling these guys "Gollum-Americans". At any rate, bad puns aside, I remember loving what you did with "Star Trek" and "The Shadow" and will definitely give these a listen. Thanks.

Its a score typical for JNH around that time. And both promos were shared years ago if I remember correctly. I once downloaded AI but have apparantly lost the archives so I had to ask a friend - Thank God he still had them.

I'd be happy to do a substantial critic, but on the one hand I have not the needed wisdom and on the other it's the first time I listen to this, so I lack references too. Saying that to me it sounds really well and that it's generating a steady torrent of endorphins won't mean much of a feedback to you, so let's do it in reverse: besides the album, thank you for the details you give us about the improvements you make or the limits you find, and please continue doing it. It's truly instructive for those of us curious about audio processing.

Maybe you should have a policy of only doing remastering when the recording sessions are released? That way, you'll have almost all of the sources to use for your projects.

True, it's a good idea. On the other hand, sometimes I just want the music in chronological order aside a little added something. And in some cases I want to "develop" a liking by creating a Deluxe Edition for a score everyone says it's brilliant. Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it does.

Another fantastic remastering effort by SonicAdventure, although if I have to be brutally honest, this actually got replaced when the complete score dropped because I was such a James Newton Howard fan at the time and very much of the mindset that every score I listened to had to have as much material available as possible. Nowadays, I've wised to the fact that a lot of material not included on official OSTs was ditched for a reason (redundancy, problems with flow, rights issues, or just plain uninteresting) and am generally happy with smaller (<1 hr) presentations. Well, either that or I'm less patient then when I was a lad. Funny that Sonic him/her/it/xerself seems to have followed the same trajectory with his/her/its/their releases over the years. One thing that makes the issue less clear-cut is that some scores, or composers in general, sound better one way or another. Most of the scores I've heard from James Newton Howard play much better in complete, chronological order (lucky, since Sonic released a lot of James Newton Howard scores in the earlier days when the Deluxe Editions were more complete), whereas, say, most of Elliot Goldenthal's scores have fantastic album presentations, and meh complete scores (lucky, since Sonic and Fink have released Deluxe Editions for Goldenthal that are more tight, concise and with more a mind for thematic and narrative flow).

If you mind me talking just a little bit longer, let me quickly discuss my thoughts on the score and this edition. Fantastic, in both regards. All three of Newton Howard's "Disney trilogy" scores hold a special place in my heart as robust action-adventure scores with clearly delineated themes, identity and narrative structure, with a massive orchestra utilising tasteful but minimal electronic embellishment at a time where Hans Zimmer was on the rise-and-rise in all parts of the film music world, including animation. The ethnic flavour of each score - both referencing a wide variety of cultures without really being associated with any one of them - helps make each score an enjoyable listening experience while helping differentiate themselves from one another. The tingling percussion (some ripped straight from Waterworld) is responsible for most that ethnic feeling in this score, and creates an enticing but mysterious atmosphere thoughout much of the second half of the score.

As for this Deluxe Edition, it sounds...great? I'm not an audiophile so I'm not comfortable commenting on such things, but this edition seems full of...colour, is the word? I like fantasy scores to have a wet enough mix while still being able to pick out specialty instruments and enjoy individual performances, and I think this Edition does that quite well. Regarding the whole "FYC vs. complete" for this score: even though I just said Newton Howard scores usually works best in complete form, I don't think you'll gain much getting the complete score over this one. The best material missing from the OST, "Atlantis Destroyed" and "Dogfight" come immeadiately to mind, are in this presentation. The complete score is like ten minutes longer and a lot of that is minor filling in of already released cues rather than new ones. I did like the reprise of the book theme from "The Smithsonian" in "The Missing Page", but it doesn't really go anywhere. The slaptick additions to "Late For Presentation" and "The Submarine" bring those cues down in my opinion. Everything else is okay, but not needed. Basically, almost all of the new material is from before the movie arrives at Atlantis, you know, before the really interesting music begins. Oh, and it's also 256kbps quality. Ouch. Heh, maybe I might go back to Sonic's version after all.

What was the point of this post again? Oh yeah, reups. Enjoy.

First of all, thanks a lot for the re-up! I love when people are doing this. Go ahead, share it whenever you like with whomever you like, I love it. But don't take money for it ;)

Well, let me put it this way: if I would do, for instance, King Kong again these days, I'd make it a little shorter. And that's saying something as it's one of my favourite scores. It's true, I don't need all material a score has to offer anymore, I walked the same path as you. However... there will be coming something where I went the opposite route and expanded something further that was already (officially) expanded. It'll be part of a larger set containing three composers (one of them mentioned by you), four scores and another album. I have yet to work on the fourth score (the most problematic) and I will keep as much material as possible. It might not be the best idea but I want to give people a choice. But I will re-release an updated version for 'The Mummy' and another Goldsmith (working on the covers right now) before that ;)

I don't think I share your enthusiasm about my version. I haven't had deleted it because I know that people for some reason like it. But if I'd do it again today, I'd do it differently, especially the sound :)

So, I was able to extract all the tracks from the rar's, except for #13 - The Secret Swim. When I try to extract it, I get a "Data Error: Wrong Password?" error in 7Zip.

I just tried it and it worked for me.

Thanks to all folks involved in making this wonderful score available as a Deluxe edition. JNH is probably my favourite composer these days, now that James Horner is gone
