A couple of years have passed since my first similar project, my Donkey Kong Country 5.1 remasters (Thread 82851) and now that i have some time and will, i thought it would be nice if i could do the same with some of my favorite songs from other games (as long as i can rip separate instruments).

So, my first one is Super Metroid's Norfair Ruins area song. This particular song is great, definitely my favorite song from the whole series and a better version than the one in Prime (the original is more dramatic). The problem i have with Super Metroid however is that the quality of the audio is one of the worst in the system. There is simply no fidelity at all. So i tried to improve it and then make the separation of the channels. The separation is just like i prefer it to be in each song but you can play with the volumes of your speakers which is like mixing the songs as you like :)

The program i use to listen to the finished 5.1 songs is VLC (make sure audio device/5.1 audio is checked), i have no idea how these sound on other programs so i suggest to use VLC. Don't listen these to stereo speakers or portable devices with headphones, they will either be downmixed and sound awful, or there are going to be missing instruments. Also, since these files are m4a, im not sure if they are going to be playable everywhere. Just use VLC on a 5.1 system and you should be fine.

Below is the link of the file, any feedback or suggestions about the quality will be appreciated. If i make more songs i will update with more links.

I hope you post all your great music here :D
I thought "Slug for a butt" from Earthworm Jim 1 would be awesome in 5.1.
No pressure though =)

I had a listen to your new tracks yesterday.
I try to give you constructive feedback:
Overall the surround quality is similar to your DKC tracks, yet some instruments seem more penetrating/sharp in a negative way. I dunno wether you could possibly improve that aspect.
One thing I noticed positively was how the "hall-sound" in the beginning of Sancturary Dungeon wanders from front to back. That really thrilled me.

Thank you for your comment.

When you mean more sharper/penetrating than they should you mean that they have more fidelity/higher frequencies than they should? Or is it that they sound louder? I did record these songs using a higher fidelity filter than the DKC songs. I did this because Super Metroid had much lower fidelity than most SNES games (like when you use the "bathroom preset" settings in your equalizer) and i thought it needed it. For this, i wasn't exactly aiming for accuracy, i wanted it to have a somewhat bigger difference than the original. Im not sure if the other songs benefited from this.

Some instruments may be a little louder than normal, that was intended and more like a personal preference because i thought some interesting instruments were buried and didn't stand out. A possible fix would be playing with the speaker volumes which allows for a limited personal mixing of the songs.

Again, thanks for the feedback (i'm not getting any)

Re-listening to the new tracks I did not notice the sharper/penetrating instruments :-/ strange. I did not change my setup/configuration. Maybe I felt that the main melody instrument in Sanctuary Dungeon was too sharp, but after comparing it to the original .spc I can say it resembles the original instrument very well. Thus there does not seem to be a need to change the recording settings to 44.1 again (or whatever your setting was with DKC).
Now that you mention it, I really appreciate that you changed the volume of some instruments to make them more present.
There is one thing which does bother me, though: the file format. Why did you release the new tracks as .mp4? The thing is, I listen to your music in my home cinema, using XBMC :D, which does not list the mp4s under music.
This is just a personal issue and I can still listen to the new tracks using the filemanager. I just wanted to let you know. But I would be happy if you changed that =)

EDIT: I think I know the reason why you dont get much feedback:
You target group is pretty small and Many old-schoolers may not have a home cinema, let alone means to playback your files. For them, .mp4 might work better than .m4a :-/

When i started the DK tunes, m4a was the only format that didn't gave me various problems, as far as i remember. Also, i made these files so they can be played on PC with VLC or Winamp. I have no idea how these sound on other players so i can't recommend any other. Anyway, in the DK topic (where there was enough feedback) people didn't have problems with the format so i kept the same one for these files as well, i didn't change it.

As for the feedback here, i don't mind that much having lots of people downloading them, but i'd like to listen to some thoughts from the few who did, like you (I started this for my own amusement anyway). Because i can only test these to my PC with my settings and speakers and i'd like to know how these sound to others and how much better they are compared to the original SPC files.
