My first upload! Yay! :) Here is the 1994 CD set The Music Behind the Magic, released by Disney Records, celebrating the music of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, featuring worktape excerpts, demos, final recordings, and the score to Howard Ashman's original treatment of Aladdin. (As a bonus, I've included the original version of "Arabian Nights" with disc 3, and the worktape demo to the song, with disc 4.) Included with the tracks is a high-quality scan of the corresponding album cover, with a transcript of lyrics and Alan Menken's song notes is to follow soon.

Really? "Fireworks," a piece of the score, is what kills it? Not "Part of that World?" Or "Under the Sea?" Hmm. Okay.

Once I get home, it'll be re-uploaded to 4Shared.

It's interesting to note how the initial idea gets improved with arrangements, orchestration and the artists' performances; some times planned in advance by the composer, and others as a consequence of needed changes. For example, we hear in the demo of "Les Poissons" that it is initially conceived as a lesson from the chef to a student's audience. But in the film version, chef Louie is alone in the kitchen, happily minding his own business, and so the original introduction had to change to the epic lines

"Mmmmm, mmmmmm,
Nouvelle Cuisine,
Les Champs-Elysees
et Maurice Chevaalieeee-e-e-e-eer!" xD
...masterfully finished with off-key vibrato and cough.

Learning more about the history of your favorite achievements of humankind is always great, so, thanks, JustienHoskie. And Menken for president.

Why haven't I posted Beauty and the Beast yet? Cause, I was hard at work on this: The lyrics and Alan Menken's song notes from the set's book, painstakingly transcribed. (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?j0fb8kq855hrypc) I took great pains to type everything up as it appears in the book, not adding anything other than the lyrics to the work tape intro to "Part of Your World," and adding the lyrics to the "Part of Your World" demo (combined with the final track in the book).

Also, I made sure to credit the main vocalist on every final song track, but I have just realized that I forgot about "Les Poss" and "Kiss the Girl." As I'm burned out for the night, I shall fix it tomorrow. If you're someone who doesn't care too much, you may download now. If you're a perfectionist like me, wait a day. :) (If you find any possible typos, let me know and I'll see if I goofed up and fix it if I did.)

Splendid, JustinHoskie. I do care but got already the first version. This adds much to the knowledge and enjoyment, and it's particularly convenient to us non English native speakers, but you're going into lots of work. Just the scans, along with the missing lyrics in text files would save you much trouble, unless you suffer the perfectionist course (then it is unavoidable). At least take it easy; there's no hurry.

About the "Les Poissons" introductory lines, credit where it's due: Ashman and Auberjonois for presidents too.

I thought about scans, especially for the song notes, but I'm a bit lazy and I wouldn't know when I would finish it, and I would want to scan the entire book, which just wouldn't be possible with my scanner.

And, once I found out the voice recognition software on Windows 7 can be used for dictation, it became a bit more manageable.

And FYI, the books have been fixed and re-uploaded. :)

The Beauty and the Beast disc has been released! This time, I included the song notes and lyrics with the MP3 and FLAC sets. Again, I tried to keep everything the same as in the book, but did change an "and" to "und" in the final lyrics to "Be Our Guest," included the work tape lyrics to "Beauty and the Beast," and added two "Editor's Notes" before the "Be Our Guest" demo and "Something There," just adding a bit more background information. Again, if you see something you think is wrong, let me know, and I'll see if I can fix it.

Also, I'm including an extra set that includes the demo to "Something There," and the full demos to "Beauty and the Beast" (with an introductory scene before) and "Belle." There is some generation loss on them, and they are 128 MP3s, but they do exist.

Now, on to Aladdin.... Speaking of which, does anyone know know where I can find a lossless version of the original recording of "Arabian Nights?"

By "original recording," do you mean demo or the version from the original soundtrack album with the line about cutting off an ear?

Decided to do a quick upload for you guys which, like everything else I do, turned a bit more complicated than I expected.

The two final sets have been uploaded!

Disc 3 is Aladdin. I added the original recording of "Arabian Nights" at the end of the disc (thanks again to Darth Neo), and edited out the demo introduction to the edited version. (It was tacked on anyway, and you'll still hear it in disc four.) Also, I included the song notes and lyrics in the sets again, but I noticed a few large mistakes after they were uploaded, so I uploaded a corrected version on it's own. Again, I tried to keep notes and lyrics to as close to the book as possible.

Disc 4 is the score to Howard Ashman's treatment of Aladdin. As "Arabian Night" "in it's original form [was] omitted from this release," I edited together a complete demo to it, using the demo intro from disc three, and the demo included in Howard Sings Ashman. (If you listen closely, or maybe not so closely, you can hear the switch to the restored demo from the noised-filled intro.) For the demo, I included the liner-notes and lyrics from Howard Sings Ashman.

Thanks, JustinHoskie. Your efforts are appreciated and the complementary tracks, interesting additions. Besides, I'd suggest you to provide the original track #01 of Disc 3 to make possible the layout of the complete set plus the tracks contributed by you, instead of just the kind replacement of the original track. Don't forget we don't have the hardware version. :)

I wouldn't be so nitpicky with this, but since you requested it, here go two minor errors I caught in the pdfs:
- In the second pdf, the Silly Girls: "Monsiour Gaston" instead of "Monsieur Gaston".
- In the third one: in "Prince Ali, Reprise (Final)" it reads "(Main hoop vocals by Jonathan Friedman)". The correct surname is Freeman, similar to the one of David Friedman, credited as vocal arranger.

But nobody needs an update for just those two; and after so much work you may just upload that track and deservedly rest in peace.

Thanks for the book feedback, @kooke! I put it to good use!

Here are all the lyric and song notes, combined into one PDF. (http://www.mediafire.com/view/?kifvpjdf8w4nxjx) I went back in and made the corrections you pointed out (How the hell did I miss "Main hop vocals?"), as well as alot of other corrections. (When I get ink for my printer, I'll print it out, go over it with a pen, and do another weed through for any more I need to fix.)

Also, I made it look more like a polished book, with a cover made from the cover of the book included with the set (I still have to work on making image PDFs the size of a piece of paper), table of contents (with hyperlinks to the different sets, for ease of access), and images from the films as headers.

Again, if you see anymore typos, let me know and I'll see if it needs to be fixed. (Also, I've decided not to make corrected versions for the isolated notes. Sorry, but this is only 2 MB, and it's relatively easy to ignore the sets you don't want.)

Enjoy...

*sigh* The reason I use 4Shared is because I have rarely seen them take down things. I can click on any link to any other file host posted on this forum a year ago, and it'll be down. I can click on a 4Shared link from three years ago, and it'll still be up.

And, because the "I have to sign up?!" comments are annoying, I have created an account just for downloading my files. PM me for the details.

Heads up - one of my pencilled-in fan labour projects this year is a restoration of the demo cassette material from this release.
