I love the score to the new film and upon seeing the film and after a few weeks of listening to the soundtrack, I was disappointed to discover how much of the real score was unreleased. Now, was I expecting the official release to be complete? Of course not! Though I now have the feeling that we will see "Complete Recordings" packages of all three Hobbit films in some years to come...*sigh*

The many variations of Radagast's and Gandalf's theme in the film are so amazing and original!

Will we ever see a leaked Sessions album for this, or will we have to wait for a fabled official release with all music?

Was there any music you heard in the film that you were disappointed to not find on the OST?

Here are a few pieces and diversions from the OST

~ "My Dear Frodo" is intersected with the shire setting theme as Bilbo begins to talk. In fact the opening thirty or so seconds could be considered "Logos".

~ As Gandalf talks about Radagast, it plays the opening minute or so of the track "Radagast the Brown" however without the childrens choir and in a slightly different orchestration (played out on strings).

~ Radagasts ascending/descending theme is heard in several different 'Settings'. As Galadriel sees Gandalf has been given the Morgul Blade, and as we see Radagast from the start.

~ A new variation of the Nature's Reclamation theme is played as the Eagles rescue the heroes. We also hear a new version of Gandalf's flight from Orthanc as heard in FotR track "Orthanc".

~ "A Good Omen" is unused in the theatrical release, though the replacement track as the Eagles fly to the Carrock bears similar phrases from the track.

~ I'm unsure if the variation of the Misty Mountains theme during the end credits has been released as part of a Bonus track, but time will tell...

Seeing the film a second time, I'm thinking there may be more "film edits" than flat-out recordings. I'm unaware to how much the Rings trilogy was affected by Post Production mixes.

I realized that too. The ones I want to hear the most are "My Dear Frodo (movie version)" and "The Eagles".
Though I have seen the movie only once so I could not be more precise.
I dont think we should be to severe with that release, most of the OST are butchered and this one remains a good quality and quantity. However I'd like to see the complete recordings but when? 2016?

That's what I'm fearing. Hopefully a leak of the recordings might be more timely. But probably not just so soon?

Sorry, but the releases is rubbish. Where, WHERE is the amazing brass version of Misty Mountains? And I wouldn't count on compte recording packages either. Don't forget it's Warner Bros, the company with the least common sense in the world.

Hard to guess... Braveheart sessions havent leaked yet and the movie was out in 95 whereas The Amazing Spiderman sessions were out 1 month after the release of the movie...

I was quite disappointed hearing the Nazgul theme when Thorin walks towards Azog ... it felt so out of place. Shore composed this huge amount of themes for Tolkien's world and used them so carefully but the score for that scene was quite bad. Why on earth didn't they play the theme heard at the end of 'Out of the Frying-Pan' which I think was Shore's original idea ... ? I can literally imagine the producers saying "No that's not epic enough but what about that epic choral theme from LOTR ?" ... a composer should get the creative freedom he needs to write a good score ... especially a genius like Howard Shore.

That's curious. I mean, I agree with the part about it feeling out of place. When it first started playing, I thought, "Oh man, they are reprising 'The End of All Things'! This is super epic!!" But then it kept going and I was like, "Wait a second. This is the Nazgul's theme. This doesn't fit here--but it is still epic!"

Honestly, I was quite disappointed to hear it missing from soundtrack. Although, I do agree with you that it was misused--kind of like how several of the important themes that were created in the first three Pirates movies were then misused in Pirates 4 (Davy Jones theme).

No matter what, I have to jump on the bandwagon here. It would be great to get all the music that was actually used in the film. I don't get the point of the giving the fans a bunch of extra music if it's all music that wasn't even used (Sherlock Holmes 2, anyone?).

Yes, tis a shame The Dimensioner. It's extra or unused takes we've been given on official releases from composers like John Williams!

Apparently concerning the Nazgul theme usage when Thorin faces Azog, Doug Adams Author of The Music of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy has said it is meant to reference a connection to the nazgul themselves. Perhaps Azog is under influence by the Nazgul?

Don't forget the silly placement of the fourth age theme as Bilbo and Thorin reconcile their differences with a hug. Why put this music there?

That's the one that appears as the tower is being blown apart at the end of Return of the King ("The Crack of Doom" on the CR), and then plays again not too far into "The Fellowship Reunited" on the CR...right? Apart from that appearance of the Nazgul theme, and all of the nods to Nature's theme, this bit with the hug was the next most recognizable bit for me. Even though the purpose of the theme may have been displaced, I still enjoyed hearing it. When it appeared, it did bring back memories of The Great Eye tumbling down and everyone cheering on, knowing that things can only get better from then on out. It brought me to the edge of tears (but so did some other parts of the film).

I took a leaked copy of the film and converted the whole end credit suite to MP3 audio at 256kbps (source quality sorry). This solves your last missing cue on the list.

Good job! It's great to hear all the unreleased music after the song!

What were they thinking with the official release?

They were thinking we'd be grateful to have TWO discs instead of just ONE. I guess they were wrong...

I want the Goblin King's song. The other songs in the film are included, but that one was omitted. Was hilarious.

Hello ! does anyone know if the cue where Thorin is beaten by Azog just after Thorin walks towards Azog is present in the deluxe edition ? I just have the simple edition and it isn't on it i guess...

Ah, I guess those are detailing the scene immediately before the one you describe. Either way, even the special edition kind of wimped out on final scene(s) music, which is a shame.

It is not present in the special edition. Both releases had the same music from 'Over Hill' to 'A Good Omen'. The cue that Shore originally composed for that scene is on the track 'Out Of The Frying-Pan'.

yeah but it's exclusion from the soundtracks has more to do with the late edits to the film that happened after the original music was recorded for the CDs, because what you hear in the movie is not the music that Shore originally intended for that scene.

It will be interesting to see in the extended edition of the movie, if that sequence will have the same music as the theatrical version, or if the music that is in the soundtrack will appear or not.

So I guess that the "sad" cue juste after Thorin gets hit by Azog (cue where he gets hit for the second time) is missing :(

I only seen the movie once and that was a month ago or something, so i can't tell you what music is on scene by scene, but like i said from 'Over Hill' to 'A Good Omen' have exactly the same tracks on both editions.
