An oddity of a score, this one. It certainly fits the seventies Sci-fi movie mold, although I'll be buggered if I see any connection with Star Wars - other than they're both orchestral scores written for movies about space. The late seventies in Japan wasn't a good time for orchestral scores - disco and synth reigned supreme - and "symphonic suite" usually meant a tiny orchestra beefed up with electric basses and a rhythm section - Kentaro Haneda-esque light pop arrangements, excellent stuff but an acquired taste and hideously dated today. By contrast, Message From Space mostly comes over as a timeless orchestral piece that can stand alone. (Except, of course, Emeralida's theme which is dripping with 70s schmaltz, but in the best possible taste...!) The small orchestra is endearing!

I even love the shamelessly 70's disco.

How nice! I actually saw this movie in the cinema back in 1978! :)

Yeah, it's a Star Wars-ripoff, no doubt about it. Very cheesy, but with some nice production values along the way, rather good model effects and some interesting Japanese spins (the evil emperor's family!) thrown in the mix.

Worth a recommendation? Well, my neighbours pretty much laughed me off the sofa for suggesting it as a rental when we watched it on VHS a couple of years later. So don't take it too serious or expect something great. ;)

And thanks for the score! :)

Regarding an official DVD-release. There are already two.

A Japanese disc from Toei, alas, without any extras or even English subtitles.

And a German release - as a "limited edition" - by Subkultur Entertainment. It's loaded with extras - but, unfortunately, not English friendly (no English subtitles or language dub, only German):

OFDb - Fassung zu Sternenkrieg im Weltall (1978) (http://www.ofdb.de/view.php?page=fassung&fid=38335&vid=337287)

- format PAL, RC2
- two discs (Japanese version, German version)
- introduction by Sonny Chiba
- making of
- three Japanese trailers
- picture gallery
- audio commentary (for the German version, which is edited) by Joerg Buttgereit and Pelle Felsch
- German trailer
- picture gallery

Oh, and the German title actually translates as "Star Wars in Space". ;)

Hopefully, the audio commentary is any good...

Buttgereit did some documentary material (and at least a book) about Godzilla and that was excellent!

Oh, and since you're most likely German, you can read up who Pelle Felsch is:

Pelle Felsch Eisenhutverlag (http://eisenhutverlag.wordpress.com/tag/pelle-felsch/)

So expect a pair of well prepared friends talking about one of their favourite films (from one of their favourite directors) and having a ball. ;)

Too bad this dvd wasn't released by Koch who also think about their foreign customers and include more subtitle options (especially English).
