This 1995 follow-up to the hit film Grumpy Old Men re-teamed Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon as salty and still-bickering best friends, this time trying to land a fabled catfish. There's 50+ romance too, and even lesbian bandits. Like its predecessor, Silvestri's score for Grumpier is upbeat with flashes of cool jazz, similar to his scores for Mouse Hunt and Father of the Bride.

The soundtrack to Grumpier (aka Grumpy Old Men 2) was released on the TVT label, but had only 2 tracks of score, the other tracks being pop vocals. Those 2 tracks "What the Heck" and "End Title" do not appear on this disc---to the best of my comparative-listening skills.

The score to Grumpy Old Men 1 never had a commercial release. One track was included on the bootleg compilation "Selected Themes: Film Music of Alan Silvestri", but it is actually from Grumpier (the 1st track).

14 tracks totaling about 23 minutes.
Good stereo sound. No dialog or sfx.
Tau and EAC indicated all tracks on this disc to be lossless.
Disc was ripped to FLAC using XLD.

Thanks so much for this... :) What a bummer though, that there isn't a proper soundtrack for the previous movie ("Grumpy old men") to be found anywhere apart from the 2 tracks...

Actually, this score was released as a part of a bootleg on the concord label that also features Overboard and a suite from Clean Slate. This version just comes without the two other scores but features the exact same tracks from the Grumpier score.

I haven't considered zipping in RAR primarily because it's not free and I'm on a Mac. There is (was?) a Mac version of WinRAR called MacRAR but it got terrible reviews, and what I use (7zX) gets excellent reviews. I don't want to upload files in both RAR and ZIP not only because of the time it would involve, but because it means using up twice as much space at the hosting site. I would consider switching to RAR compression if there was a decent Mac version and if enough people thought it would help them download my stuff. So far you are the only one who has not been able to extract any of my uploads, which I'm guessing is the problem you are having? Maybe other FFshriners could chime in with their opinions.

Ok, I clicked the link and all it did was download winzip. How can I get the 7z files ( ?) so I can download them and try to stick them in winzip so I can attempt to open them? Been looking for this exact score of music for a long time and I've found it is no doubt the most elusive thing on the planet!

I use a mac as well and i use an app called WinZip for Mac (or something like that - I'll double check that later). It wasn't free but it was cheap - ten bucks or something - and it handles the extraction of pretty much any and all file types with no issues. Also, for converting files from FLAC to something else, people can use Audacity (which is free and a very robust app for dealing with music files), or Fission, which is NOT free but is well worth the small price. I use it all the time. It can batch process files with a minimum of effort, making the conversion process both easy AND efficient. Hope this helps!

All that should download is a zipped folder. It sometimes looks like a folder with a zipper on it, sometimes just a little white page. Now all you have to do is unzip it to get inside! 7-zip is by far the best choice for a PC (for one thing, it automatically converts troublesome punctuation in a file title to something the PC can read). You can download it for free from 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org)

Once installed, right-click on the folder you just downloaded and choose "7-Zip." In the sub-menu that will appear, pick where you want the extracted files to go. I usually just pick "Extract Here" and a separate folder will be created with the audio files inside.

The audio files will be in FLAC format, and you will also need a conversion program to make them mp3, WAV, or anything else. iTunes does not accept the FLAC format, so trying to import those tracks into iTunes won't work. Convert them first! Please see the notes I made under the link in the spoiler if you don't have a conversion program.

And let us know if this works for you!

Got it! Found the files- they were in some kind of winzip folder and downloaded in a inconspicuous location on my puter. Poked around online for something that would play a FLAC file and downloaded "Final Media Player". That plays them. I went from the speaker output on the puter into an outboard disk burner (Works great!) and burned a disk. Popped em onto Itunes and onto the ipod. Did a whole lot better that I thought I'd do!
I offer my sincere thanks - love this score!

I just watched GRUMPY(!) OLD MAN and i noticed something.
Close to the end of the movie, when the tax collector gets buried
under the snow from the roof, it seems to me Silvestri is
paying tribute to Ernest Gold's score for It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
for some ten seconds. Would makes sense, because it's the same kind of slapstick.

Here's the scene:

Thanks for sharing this, friend. Just two tracks by Silvestri in the official album are too little and this fills the gap nicely. Without any official release of the score nearly twenty years later, if I was him I'd be quite pleased that the fans have this around. :)

The track of that scene in the bootleg is #13, "I'll Call you", and for what I've listened of "It's A Mad Mad World" in youtube, it might be such a twink. The melody is on a different part of the scale than on "Mad World" but has similarities, and the waltz time brings that kind of comedic feeling, in contrast to the usual style before and after the fall of the snow. I can't say if the reference was intended, but Silvestri could have chosen zillions of things instead of the waltz, so it may be. It's fun when composers do that.
