When I first heard Geir Tveitt’s work (the piano concertos) I could not place him at all. Imagine Norwegian folk music mixed with Ravel. His sound is extraordinary. As is his legacy. Over 90% of his life’s work was destroyed in 1970 when his home was struck by lightening. Manuscripts were stored in great wooden cabinets. The house was atop the Hardanger fjord and the fire engines could not reach it. What little exists today has actually been pieced together from the ashes or old recordings studied by musicologists. The harp concerto was discovered in a music academy file cabinet. Prillar was found shredded to pieces in a paper sack in a barn, the strips pasted back together.

Prillar is a marvelous orchestral work that contains a Bolero rhythmic drive. The fascinating Hardanger fiddle became familiar to most in Howard Shore’s score for The Two Towers. The harp concerto is unique in three slow movements. Nykken is a tone poem/folk story about a horse that rises above the water, intoxicates a pour soul who takes mount, then goes on a wild ride through the forest only to once more submerge with the rider beneath the surface- and a breathtaking gallop it is.
