Howard Hanson "Symphony No.2, Romantic"

Samuel Barber "Violin Concerto"

Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra
Leoanard Slatkin conducting
Elmar Oliveira, violin

Samuel Barber, one of the younger composers whose music Hanson championed, died five weeks before Hanson in 1981. This was Barber's first concerto commissioned by a Philadelphia businessman for a young protege. Surely one of the most beautiful works of our century it was declared 'unplayable'.

Barber played it through with Eugene Ormandy & The Philadelphia Orchestra prior to the public premier. He arranged for the businessman a private performance with Albert Spalding as soloist and then bought back the rights for the first performance- giving Spalding the honor of the premiere. (ha!)

The Romantic Symphony No. 2.
1) Adagio
2) Andante
3) Allegro

Concerto for Violin & Orchestra
4) Allegro
5) Andante
6) Presto in moto perpetuo

(flac.)

Barber's Violin concerto is a nice piece. Though I haven't listened to it for probably ten years. Thanks for sharing this version.
