My second score today: "Lady in the Water" from James Newton Howard, 2006. For this one I used the complete version available out there... and it�s a shame that it�s mp3, albeit in very high quality. But I wasn�t very happy with that situation and so I replaced missing frequencies with new ones I created myself. I won�t tell how I did that, it will be my little secret. TauAnalyzer will test it as CDDA though. When I could I used the tracks from my official CD, in some cases I went so far as editing pieces from the complete set into lossless tracks from the official CD. You won�t notice the edits, they are of course seemless. Other things I did:


averaging out extreme differences in gain level - the official CD was much louder than the complete set, I opted for the lower gain and recreated dynamic peaks lost because of excessive brickwall limiting
matching the overall frequency response of all tracks so that they sound the same


Everything was done using the best signal processors available with a keen knowledge of how an orchestra is supposed to sound, how the dynamic should be etc. Needless to say that I 'remastered' it - but don�t expect an iPod-ready sound with too much bass and treble to compensate for the horrible headphones Apple provides. It will sound perfect anywhere else though. If you don�t know what I�m talking about don�t bother asking and don�t download this set. As one person on another forum said: "Instruments are more apparent when i close my eyes its like they are visible. From the piano, bells and strings, i hear more character to the sound. Each instrument is now more revealing." It might sound arrogant but I couldn�t have said it better myself.

Is it complete? Yes!
Will it play like an officially expanded version? Yes!
Does it sound well? In my opinion it sounds better than the official version.
Will I provide mp3? No, never! So don�t ask and create them yourself. If you don�t know how, ask google.

The cover was important to me too. There are so many high resolution pictures and beautiful poster designs available that I simply had to use them all. You can see the four different front covers above - but you�ll also get three back covers and several inlay covers to choose from. Example:

Very underrated score in my opinion!

WOW. I decided to sit down and give this a listen in my iTunes library whilst organizing it. I've never seen the film nor heard the score. I don't even have the OST. But I must say, I love it already. The main theme is quite lovely, and I love how many recurrences it has. I've been making a list of which cues will be going on the iPod, and I can say it's probably about 85%. SonicAdventure, nicely done :)

Also, I've just put in a request at my library for this. If this score is this amazing, I can only hope I'll enjoy the film as much

Good to know... shame you didn't like the movie. While not perfect, I still think highly of it, and one of my favourite Mel Gibson performances!

Lady was OK'ish... had some good ideas but overall poorly executed and quite obvious that Shyamalan's ego was getting the better of him. Not his worst, but far from his best.

The score is very lovely though... and the climactic cues are amongst JHN's best!

Yeah....I think you were thinking of Signs. Now that is a movie I love, and still freaks me out to this day. And it's JNH's score that adds to the freak-out factor of the film and makes it so enjoyable.

Now Lady in the Water. Hmm. Too rushed, no character development, nothing was explained, and the actors were horrible. The only thing good to come of that film is JNH's magnificent score.

Agreed... Signs is made so much more memorable because of JNH's score. I doubt the film would have been as powerful if the scoring duties were in the hands of ANY other composer, even my all time fave Jerry Goldsmith.

I thought Lady In The Water had reasonable potential, as a fair few of the many characters were interesting, and the film itself had a handful of solid scenes... and I loved how the climax brought it all together (the reveal of the guardian is a fantastic scene)! But ultimately, the pretentious dialogue and Shyamalan's elevated confidence in himself stops this from being something great. Personally, I find the Freddy Rodriguez "Reggie" character to be the obvious example of this, as the only-one-muscled-arm plot device is completely ludicrous, and could have been made much more believable and effective if Shyamalan had made him a cripple to explain the 'one-sided' gimmick and adjust the dialogue to suit the character accordingly. You can imagine how much better the climactic scene would have been if that were the case.

Still... I prefer it to The Village!! :-)

Nope. The quality of the 320 kBit/s was very good and since most of my version came from the OST I didn't want to do it again.
