May I add the first recording Goodwin made of his "Drake 400 Suite" - one of his finest works outside of film music:

Thank you for the album. It's interested to hear "NZ" suite. Has he ever written an "OZ" suite? :-)

Eternal gratitude for this. :D

These early recordings don't quite have the flair of the more recent Chandos efforts, but they have a charm all of their own. That, and, of course, this one is conducted by the great man himself.

A small curiosity, though... there is a strange grinding / ticking / crinkling / almost farting noise running through pretty much every loud section of this CD. What in the world is that? I've never heard a sound like it. It doesn't sound like a ripping error. Please somebody else tell me they can hear it, too...

Thank you Oh Great Bunny Worshiper!

I have have all the Naxos 'Light British Music' discs... the lesser 'Olympians'... so this should be fun.

(especially looking forward to the farty noises) ;-)

I was going to say I couldn't hear it but then I started to. Odd sound, isn't it?

The 'farty' sound is actually rolling percussion emulating the sound of great waves at sea. Thus it would be more accurate to state it is 'salty' sound. Bruce Broughton used string instruments to create a 'rolling' sound throughout his Young Sherlock Holmes scores... I think. ;-)

I'm open to the concept of instrumental sound effects but I really don't think that is what it is; since it occurs during all reasonably loud passages and in pieces which have absolutely nothing to do with the sea, or for that matter any body of water at all. I can't imagine Goodwin would spontaneously decide to include the sound of crashing waves (or chronic flatulence; I still say the sound has something of a brown hue about it) in every piece and I have never heard these sounds ever before - not in Goodwin, not in any other piece of music classical or otherwise. But I hear it each and every time the orchestra play loudly on this recording.

I'm becoming somewhat obsessed by it... this is unhealthy.

I only listened to it on my computer- didn't burn it for a listen on my mega speakers the size of a sixth grader. But after listening to the OTHER version posted here- it does sound as if something is wrong with that recording... which is breaking wind in appropriately for a sea poem. ;-)
