Such a great film, man! I re-watched it recently and so much more became clear! Like the entire movie is in chronological order. When I first saw it, I thought he was in limbo for years and he was just now starting to realize what happened to him. But no, the entire film takes place during the Vietnam War. Once he gets stabbed in the beginning, BOOM! He's in purgatory! He THINKS it's five years after the war, he thinks he divorced his wife and started dating the slut (or succubus, if you think about it) from the post office, but that's all in his head. And all the "flashbacks" of Nam are what's actually happening in the real world. That also got me thinking about Silent Hill 2, since Jacob's Ladder was an inspiration for it. They never really tell you when James killed Mary, they just let you know it was recent. So I figured that James kills Mary, then BOOM! He's struck with amnesia, and a letter telling him Mary's in Silent Hill. ............yup! I really got carried away there. I'm sorry.
