Jecht doesn't seem bad at all.In fact, he asks auron to protect him.Granted, he sometimes seemed like a questionable type, like how he was in prison.

I think he loves his son, even if he cries so much.

Btw:Why does tidus cry so much?

Jecht was a self-absorbed, ego-maniacal asshole who treated his son like dirt because Tidus got all the wuss genes, cried all the time, never talked back to his father, and was a complete embarrassment to Jecht. Jecht either: A. thought that by demeaning Tidus, he would grow up to be strong and able to take anything; B. vented his frustration at his son who wasn't as good an athlete as Jecht; or C. didn't know how to raise kids and his ego-mania drove an impassable rift between the two.

Tidus cries all the time because of his mommy issues. He wanted to be more with his mother because she didn't insult him or make him cry, but she always wanted to spend time with Jecht because she bought into the myth that he was a great guy. Then Tidus would cry because he wanted his mom, and Jecht would see this and taunt him about it, spurring his son to cry more.

Wow what an asshole.

And holy shit, spoony was right about him being a crybaby, but i think his dad went too far.I don't hate tidus either. You should watch the review, its hilarious how much he hates tidus and FFX, unless he was exaggerating, but in one of his ultima reviews, he mentions Tidus, and starts rambling about his hatred for him, then again, i hate cloud and sephiroth because of the fanbase and square enix milking them to death, and it may be irrational.

Funny, I am going through playing FFX (for about the 15th time) and I asked the same question. Sometimes I feel like he was just a 'tough love' type, and Tidus was just a crybaby who never really got it. When the group goes to the Farplane and Tidus is telling Yuna about his mom never paying attention to him when Jecht was around, it made me think of the Oedipus (sp) complex lol. But I still think Tidus may have overreacted with a lot of his anger towards his dad, because even up to the very end, I believe he loved his dad, and his dad loved him very much. The high-5 at the end was nice, to me. =)

Now that i think of it, you might be right about tidus suffering from oedipus complex. He also one of the strongest characters.I can see why some people can't stand him and his whining.
I do think he gets a little better at the end, but not much. Also:Damm that person who killed auron is strong.

I think i can understand jecht's personality. He seems a lot like your typical male who becomes competitive when there is another man around, and trash talks the other guy if he wins.Jecht is a winner, and his son isn't, and he is disappointed.

I've known some very competitive people, they can be fun to play with, but can spoil the mood.

I think that what's been said about Jecht being an altogether shit father is quite right, but I think his actions in Spira redeem him, at least in my book. I don't think I ever liked the character, but I certainly sympathized with him. While he got thrown in prison for being a assehole and the beginnings of his pilgrimage with Braska and Auron were quite shaky, Jecht, as the journey went on, genuinely regretted giving Tidus the upbringing that he did and was so changed and penitent by the end that he made the ultimate sacrifice. Also, seeing someone mentioned Spoony, he said in his FFX-2 review that Jecht was such a bad father in order to instil in Tidus the desire to kill him one day, implying that Jecht knew that he would be taken to Spira and become Sin. I just thought that was quite weird. I think Jecht just didn't know how to raise a child and his personality made the fact that Tidus apparently didn't take after him all the more upsetting and made him try to change that.
