I dislike westerns and scores for westerns greatly, but THIS SCORE is one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Deeply moving and haunting!

When I was twelve.....

Well honestly you're the first person that I have known of that outgrew Westerns and the associated music.

What kind of music do you fancy these days?

(you are: you're)

I also outgrew Star Wars and John Williams.

I have composers whose work I greatly enjoy, but not all of it (that wouldn't make sense). The same goes for classical composers. Gerald Finzi is my favorite British composer (masterpiece: Dies Natalis sung by Wilfred Brown) yet he is mostly known for his piano & voice work that I do not enjoy. Obviously Kaczmarek is a fav. James Newton Howard is amazing. Dario Marionelli is growing on me. Yared's English Patient & Possession are top of the line. Desplats' Benjamin Button is gorgeous. A lot of the lesser Olympians I enjoy. I do like the 'Americana' sound (Hildago) but no, not westerns.

Thanks Professor, I think we should change your name to Phideas Proofreader.

While we are on the subject of proper grammar/spelling your name Phideas was that misspelled intentionally?

I have always seen it spelled Phidias.

You make me blush. ;-)

Phideas is my Avatar picture... that was his name.

OH. I do like John Williams' The Reveivers very much! And the film. But that falls into the Americana range, I think. I have the 1990 Masters of Film Music release, but the sound is ghastly. I know there is a concert version, but it lacks the folksy instrumentation of the original.

Thanks very much, El Cid & Wildwood. :) From what samples I've heard, this sounds pretty. Unlike Quigley or Silverado, it's not a "typical" western score.

It avoids all the cliches. Sweeping strings. Bold French horns. Lonely woodwinds. Heroic brass. Energetic without sounding like charging horses. The Native American moments are pastoral and haunting. A very poignant score. Possibly if Ralph Vaughan Williams had been asked to score a western THIS is what he would have created.

What a pleasure it is to come across a score previously unknown to me that exceeds all expectation. Certainly one of Broughton's superior efforts for television.
