Thomas Newman - Less Than Zero (1987) [FLAC]

I posted this about a year ago with Megaupload (RIP) but wanted to update with a new link. This is one of my top three favorite scores, and to this day I can't believe it never received a full-fledged official release. Really beautiful, ethereal music that I hope to get in the hands of more people. "Early Phone Call" is such a delicate, gorgeous track. I hope you enjoy the music as much as I do. Also: great film.

Thanks to Naigoto for the rip.

Track List:
1. Early Phone Call
2. Feeling Nostalgic
3. Zuma Beach
4. I Need $50,000
5. Sex At The Loft
6. Blair And Her Dad
7. Julian On The Stairs
8. Going Through Withdrawal
9. Heading To Palm Springs
10. Rip's Hotel Suite
11. The Cemetery (Extended)
12. Quick Escape
13. Seeing Blair Again
14. The Loft's Been Trashed
15. Julian's Dead

Thanks very much :) I've had an MP3 version of this for a while, & I'm normally not a flac freak, but Thomas Newman is my fav.

Never seen this movie, but I'm as big a Newman fan as they come so I just had to have this.

Am I correct in thinking this is a film adaption of Bret Easton Ellis' novel?

Yes, it is. It's a great book too by Ellis.

This is also one of my favorite soundtracks - do you know of any others that are similar? Some I've found are maybe parts of Full Metal Jacket, Monsters and Drive (although though I thought that was maybe a little too much of a rip-off)

Most of Thomas Newman score from late 80's begining 90's are ethereal and ambient, any Cliff Martinez score are too.
Every film composed by Jack Nitzsche in the 80's: Starman, 9 1/2 weeks, Stand by me, Revenge, Blue Sky.

Also you can try:
Haunted Summer by Christopher Young
The Saint of Fort Washington, The Trigger Effect, Michael Clayton by James Newton Howard.

Always by John Williams also has some dreamy atmospheric tracks. I was just listening to Less that Zero -- during "I Need $50,000", I was reminded of the last 3 minutes of Zimmer's 'Journey to the Line' in The Thin Red Line.

I have this one track from Thomas Newman's Light of Day, sounds similar:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?e1c49ygm2vvbh8e

It's from a very random sampler collection of early Thomas Newman scores. I don't remember where I got it, I don't know why the track numbers are off, and although it all sounds good, it is all low bit rate. But if anyone wants it, PM me (since the Josh and S.A.M. tracks are The No-no Labe1).

Thomas Newman Collection: Tracklist1. The Man With One Red Shoe
2. Gung Ho (A)
3. Gung Ho (B)
4. Jumpin' Jack Flash - Breaking The Code
5. Jumpin' Jack Flash - Love Music
6. Quicksilver - Suite Streets
7. Light Of Day - Elegy
8. The Lost Boys - Motorcycle Chase
9. Men Don't Leave
12. Career Opportunities - Criminal Bop
13. Career Opportunities - Little Pony
17. Josh And S.A.M. - Saltwater Palace
18. Josh And S.A.M. - Trains
19. Josh And S.A.M. - End Title
20. Corrina, Corrina - Home Movies
30. Boston Public (TV) - Main Title

I'll give this it's own thread when I have time to answer more PMs :P

It looks like the source is a CD I created in 2001 exclusively for a guy in Japan (in trade for something I wanted). I pulled together some of the (at the time) rarer tracks and fleshed the album out with some others that I liked. The Boston Public theme was a TV rip I did which I threw in. It's a mixed bag as far as quality goes. FYI, the total number of tracks was 35. Looks like some got weeded out before it got to you.

In a similar vein but not quite the same, I would recommend Desperately Seeking Susan (also by Newman) and the Heathers score by David Newman (Thomas' brother).

Heathers always felt to me like David Newman emulating his brother.

Some good recommendations here. I'm checking them out now. Also discovered the full Twin Peaks collection on this forum.
I had the previous 2 CDs Fire Walk With Me and the OST but this collection is incredible! You can recognise it's influence on a number of my favourite electronic artists.

You really hit the nail on the head there. It's one of my favorite scores too and one of Newman's very best. It's amazing that it was never released.

Couldn't agree more. The score was so haunting and beautiful it made me a lifelong fan of Tom Newman.
Proof that an amazing score can elevate a mediocre film. Thanks!!

I can't believe the link is still working. :) Thank you so much for offering this fantastic album here!
This was one of the few scores by Newman which was missing in my collection - as a big fan of Newman, how could that happen? Maybe because it was never officially released. I just watched the film again and was touched by the very first note of the music. I can't thank you enough for this brilliant upload!

I haven't seen the movie since it came out. But at the time I thought it was underrated. After listening to this all day, I wonder now if my opinion was based on the score.

This is such incredibly lyrical music. It has instantly become one of my favorites now as well. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.

If anyone is holding back from this because of the film's reputation, please don't.

I believe there are two versions of the LESS THAN ZERO score. One has a lot of background hiss in it (you notice it right away) and the other sounds pretty good.. your thoughts?

Can't speak to any others, but I hear no background hiss in this version at all.

Perhaps someone like Sonic Adventure could improve it in some way - tweak the lower-upper-mids or flange the manifold envelope or something. :) But I am 100% happy with this.

I had this very copy a couple years ago. I had a hard drive failure and even though I managed to save most of the data onto an external disk, there were still some things lost- this album is one of them. I am quite surprised to find a working link of this after all this time. Thanks again!

Edit: Zbranek001 isn't crazy, I hear noise/hiss as well. I'm not sure what it is, but it's a low frequency hum or buzz and more obvious in the quietest tracks. Not sure what can be done about it without a negative affect on the sound quality. It's not a huge deal, but it detracts slightly from the experience (if you can hear it that is). Alas, I'm satisfied just to have the music. The dynamic range of these files is incredibly deep, prepare to adjust the volume dial as some tracks are extremely quiet (Feeling Nostalgic) or very loud (Zuma Beach).

I saw this film quite a few years ago, liked it, and would be willing to watch again. There were a few moments in the film where Newman's music caught my attention in it's subtle beauty.
