What is the difference between the Intrada version and the Varese version?

The Varese Deluxe edition (14 tracks, Varese Sarabande 302 066 518 2, 2003) has 1:00:49 min of music, the Intrada limited Edition from 1993 (13 tracks, Intrada VJF 5002D) is shorter (53:14 min only).

Other than that, there was a bootleg with about 80 minutes floating around (15 tracks, mp3, 320), don't know the source, but it sounds pretty good. Haven't played all the tracks yet, so I'm not sure about sfx or dialogue. Maybe other people who have this bootleg can clarify.

I can't upload the Varese Deluxe edition, of course, since that's not allowed! P.M. me, if you want to know more about that edition.

Are you sure your 18 track version of Poltergeist 2 is an official soundtrack? AFAIK, there is no such release. The first official releases (LP and CD) had 5 or 6 tracks, the later ones 13 or 14 (CD's only). If it has 18 tracks, it smells bootleg...

pretty sure that this is from "Supertracks"! It was on two CDs, disc 1 was 10 tracks, nearly full, and 8 tracks on disc 2. I am fairly sure that I got that from ST, and not some studio source. It MAY have come from someone in the biz, I just cannot remember, to be completely honest about it. But I do think that it was a ST release, and not bootleg, meaning that it has really GREAT sound, and 320 MP3 as well.

Uploading it right now, may be done in less than an hour. I am listening to it as I type, really LOVE that Goldsmith music.

Do you have any evidence that it's from Supertracks? The label's correct name is "Super Tracks Music Group" (contact info: John J. Alcantar, 12072 Brookhurst St., Garden Grove, CA 92840, USA, Fax: 715-636-8585), and I even found some lists of the scores they released, but no evidence of Poltergeist 2 (they may not be complete, though...):

http://rateyourmusic.com/label/super_tracks_music_group/

and

http://www.discogs.com/label/Super Tracks Music Group

Then I looked for it in wikipedia, but is has no entry for "Super Tracks", "Supertracks" or "SuperTracks". They have a homepage (Super Collector (http://www.supercollector.com)), but since it's "under construction", it is of no help, either.

www.Soundtrackcollector.com doesn't list a Supertracks release of Poltergeist 2, either. It DOES list Splash and Krull, though, two of their many releases. Interestingly, the Krull ST release is listed as "Bootleg", but not the Splash release! That begs the question, is Supertracks a bootleg company, after all?

Finally, I found this entry on wikipedia (under "Poltergeist 2: The Other Side"):

Music
Composer Jerry Goldsmith, who had written the Academy Award nominated soundtrack to the first Poltergeist film, returned to compose and conduct a score to Poltergeist II: The Other Side. Though "Carol Anne's Theme" returns from the first film's soundtrack, the score for Poltergeist II: The Other Side consisted of mostly new material blending traditional orchestral elements with new electronic sounds. The soundtrack has been released three times; through Varse Sarabande in 1986, Intrada Records in 1993, and a deluxe edition by Varse Sarabande in 2003.

No mention of a Super Tracks edition, either!

It gets more curious, if one digs deeper and deeper.

So, did you see the original CD's, or do you at least have some cover scans, to shed some light into this mystery? Or do you only have the 18 tracks in digital form?

Looking forward to your answer... (I LOVE mysteries!)

As far as "evidence" is concerned, would you consider the original discs that I got from John as evidence? I will have to dig them out now, and find out for myself! John was always giving me stuff like this, creating nice covers and discs, stuff like that, and then NOT releasing the actual disc! He had done that on a number of discs, so this may be one of them. The original discs will show for sure, since I had only gotten a couple of scores from John that didn't have cover art on them. I'll let you know. And that address for John and Supertracks is LONG gone, about 10-12 years now! Don't know about that FAX phone number, Because it listed to a cellphone, but John's doing some entertainment representation stuff now, you can find him online, but he's just "so busy" all the time, and cannot be concerned with soundtrack stuff anymore! :)

Okay, that's the final piece in the puzzle, if you got an unreleased CD from John himself! That explains it! (Mystery solved!)

Now, what's is your opinion regarding ST being a bootleg company or a not? That can be tough to answer, I know. I have heard that in many cases, it's a grey zone in the industry, and this may be one such case. The German label "Tsunami" is another such case. How do you define a bootleg in the first place? I think, quality factors in (how much know-how to produce a quality product does the bootleg people have), but also things like copyright and if the owner of the rights gets paid or not. (A bootlegger does it without permission, of course!)

These days, some digital bootlegs (not CD's) have superior quality than their official counterparts, and/or are more complete! On the other hand, only the official people at the studios have access to the original tapes, stems etc. and may have more resources for remastering efforts, especially with the Golden and Silver Age scores. (In some cases, the only available sources are in private hands, e.g. in the composer's or his estate's.)

Quitting for today, see you tomorrow!

Best regards,

Well, the one thing that really impressed me about Supertracks, was that John had gotten a signed agreement with the COMPOSER of a score, to print up a certain number of soundtracks, like 500, for his personal promotion. Most times, the score would say "Not for resale" or something like that, or "For promotional use only" on the label, and John would actually print up 1000 CDs, and then sell them as a rare and unavailable soundtrack. I had heard that even though he was getting the composers to sign an agreement with him, John wasn't coming through with the CDs, or at the very least he was dragging his heels on producing them. The discs themselves were VERY nicely produced, very professional looking, and not some glued on label on the disc, much like the discs from "Tsumani". I would say that would be the difference. A bootleg score would be one that was produced by ONE person, working out of his (or her) home, with a glued on label, like the CDs and DVDS that I purchased from "Extinct Attractions". They were HORRIBLE quality, store bought discs, and I had to transfer them at once to better quality discs, and keep the backedup files in my computer, which was good that I had done that, as the discs became unwatchable after a couple of years. Just horrible!

I think that you may be correct about the promos that John gave out. I got a copy of "Masada", which was 4 discs, (I think), and then he came out with a totally different version. My 4 disc version, when John gave me a copy, he was selling copies online, thru some auction situation (not Ebay), and he was getting literally HUNDREDS of dollars for each set, and was getting tens of copies sold! I was amazed at this, because I was not really impressed with the score itself, Even though it was Goldsmith, who is my FAV, but apparently it was a very rare and unproduced score, so people were jumping at the chance to own a "Official" release!

Incredible! :)

Very interesting. Thanks for the info!

I'm quite fond of Jerry's Masada score, but you know that he scored only half of that mini-series, don't you? The other half was composed by Morton Stevens, Goldsmith's orchestrator and fellow composer, who was recommended by Jerry himself, since he, Jerry, was not able to finish the job due to other commitments, I think. The complete score was released by Intrada in 2011 (two discs).

Looking forward to your 18 track version, truly.

Wouldn't call Goldsmith my fav, but there are certain scores of his I do love & consider really unique or groundbreaking, and Poltergeist's 'otherworldy' sound is one of 'em. Not well versed on music terminology--'post modern', maybe?--Secret of Nimh has that sound too & I love it.

Williamtaylor1969
08-10-2012, 07:58 PM
Yes, I saw that Intrada release, and although I'm not sure, I think what happened was that all of the tracks from ST, were put on four discs, and the same tracks were put on two discs from intrada. I will have to check the original ST masada discs to see the track names and times, but pretty sure that's what happened. John spread them out over 4 discs, barely putting 30-45 minutes per disc!

While I really love some of Goldsmith's stuff, there are some that just don't blow any wind up my skirt! (hehehehe) "Runaway" was another one that just didn't do anything for me. Jerry tried some new stuff, a new direction on his scores, and then he went back to tried and true composing with "Supergirl", which had a fantastic main title!

Which just goes to show you that sometimes, a composer will kind of "take a day off" or not have his heart into a project, either because it's a contractually obligated project, or they just aren't paying him the money that he wanted, so he sort of "Wings it". The score for "Russia house" was actually a rejected score from another film, and Jerry just re-orchestrated it, and it became a hit score!

Go figure! :)

William

Russia House is by far my fav Goldsmith. As I graphic designer, I totally understand how artists can be inspired, not be inspired, get on a roll, or hit doldrums. It happens. And the best stuff often comes from an unknowable confluence of circumstance. That's why being prolific is so important, 'cuz you never know when the stars will align.
