Well... when it was only 3 years in my life I lived with my family and Grieg and Prokofiev and Danny Kaye singing "Hans Christian Andersen"... and so very quietly listening and listening again to Boris Karloff reading The Ugly Duckling and other Andersen gems. That never was revived on CDs... but you can find remarkably so many of Karloff's unusually moving and insightful recordings on Amazon. And, yes, many of the prices are quite good... even for his "Peter and the Wolf", used and new. If you glance at the dotty star image of customer reviews, it's at least 100 five stars.

I'd love to hear Karloff too, but in the meantime you can hear the posh tones of Joanna Lumley reading Peter and the Wolf here http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?t=204637.
