The only release is the 1977 Quincy Jones release.

Actually, the Gerald Fried score was released on LP in 1978. It was a three-album set totaling around 2 1/2 hours, with both music and spoken word segments. However, the Fried score was never released to CD as far as I know.

A lot of the music is obscured by dialogue in the LP release--while it isn't a children's storybook record, the LP is definitely sequenced to tell the Roots story. I'd love to see a complete score for Roots, focused exclusively on the music (both source music and Fried's compositions), but I've never heard even so much as a rumor about such a release. It's a shame, really--Roots, in my opinion, is Fried's best work, and deserves to be revisited.

This got me way excited that there was finally a proper release. It's an absolutely beautiful score, and the music for The Next Generation is also wonderful.
