I just re-watched the film, for the first time in many years, compairing OST and the music
in the film, making notes. I could give you a complete breakdown, but it's tricky.

To keep it simple and short: There's almost no music in the first 40 minutes of the movie,
just some subtle scoring (short cues and no real difference to the OST). The second third
features the well-known music from the OST, without any recognizable differences. It's
the last 33 minutes of the movie, however, were things get interesting. There's a whole
unreleased, 4 1/2 minute cue were Horner introduces his computer action music and it is
performed in a different, unique way not featured on the OST. Some short, striking choir
bits for the terror tapes involved, and interesting original cues for the Final Playback
montages (slightly different compared to the OST). Same goes for the End Title. Most
sequences are littered with dialogue/sound, some are pretty clean.

An isolated score would be terriffic, but something tells me that we won't get one with
the upcoming Blu Ray. Perhaps we have more luck with one of the two laser discs that
exist, one made in 1991, and the other one made in 1998? Of course, I don't have 'em.

In the meantime, I'm trying to extract what I can.

I checked the few links i have regarding isolated scores on laser discs, this being one of them:

KQEK.com - Isolated Scores on DVD & Laserdisc - Index "B" (http://www.kqek.com/isolated_scores/Isolated_Scores_B.htm)

I can't find a listing of it there. Perhaps anyone else has any other links?

Brainstorm DOES NOT have an isolated score in any format .

Good to know, moviemusicsi. Thanks for the research, Cal!

Unfortunately, I see a wealth of dialogue and sfx here, especially during some key scenes.
You can edit a lot and twist it around, but there are still many sources of sound. If some-
body wants to assist me by giving me cleaned up rips from the new Blu Ray, the sound
problem could be reduced to a minimum.

I would be quite happy with a rip of the main / end titles and the final scenes ....

could you do that for the time being while we await another rip ?

I'm just in the middle of doing exactly that, moviemusicsi. The Main Title, End Title and
the 4-minute cue (which I call "Project Brainstorm" from now on) are not the problem.
What's completely insane is the "Final Playback" sequence, which - in the picture - is
split up in 4 or 6 different sections, with lots of voices and heavy intrusive sound, as
the music almost invades the film here and there, along with the work of the sound
wizards.

Which upload service would you recommend? I won't start another account.

There's a remastered edition of the dvd with 5.1 sound:

http://www.amazon.com/Brainstorm-Remastered-Edition-Christopher-Walken/dp/B001IHJ97E/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1341156592&sr=1-2&keywords=brainstorm

It's either that or the BluRay that would offer the best chances of ripping the sound without SFX/speech.

Cool! I'm working from an avi right now. It could be the same source - it sounds great.
Let me rip some stuff, just for demonstration purposes.

The ac3 file from the Bluray:

The Left and Right channels are already great!
https://rapidshare.com/files/1201045955/00042 0.ac3.zip

I can make a Complete Score with these L/R channel,
but if somone want to try to erase some dialogue parts with the center channel, just tel me before i work on it...
(i don't know myself how to work with the center channel).
It also necessary to rework on sound levels of some parts due to the movie mix.
