I never tried this game until it came out for the Gamecube, but it blew my expectations away. The game has made me laugh out loud more time then any rpg ever, and it just has so much to do! I love the element customization of the weapons, the strategic airship battles, the huge number of sidequests- and I haven't even beat the game yet.

What I'm trying to say here, I guess, is that everyone who hasn't played this game should pick it up- it's not too hard to find the gamecube version. And I'd love to know what other people thought of it.

Considering it got discontinued, I'd rather say it is. At least to find it new. But, yeah, really, Skies of Arcadia made me regret not owning a Dreamcast.

SOA was okay. But Grandia 2 was superior. Or maybe I'm just mad it killed my DC memory card for some reason? All those hours.. :(

Skies was much better than Grandia II in my opinion. But then again I played the Cube port of Skies and the horrible PS2 port of Grandia II. Don't get wrong, I liked both games, but Skies was much better.

Is it really discontinued? They have a bunch of copies of copies at my local EB- I should buy them up and make me some phat ebay cash.

Duo, have you played Skies of Arcadia since it came out for the cube? I never played it on the dreamcast but from what I understand, they added tons of stuff.

No, no, just the DC version - for the moment at any rate. I don't deny that it's a good game, probably way better now that it's on GC... But at the time, on the DC, I totally preferred Grandia 2. :B

Well, are you american or european ? Because I've heard it's not discontinued yet in Europe. Then again I could be wrong.

Skies of Arcadia is a wicked game, I had it for my DC. Hours of fun. Grandia 2 aint half bad either but its not a patch on the origional "Gadwin's secret move, Dragon King Slice!"
Man I love that game.

Skies is great. Although the storyline is somewhat clich I loved it. Everything, the locations, the characters and the battles. The only thing is that the 'moon gives me strenght' thing was somewhat annoying, but everything else was great =D

spoilers:

The whole six moons and such + Nasrad :D and the delphinius are just great ^_^ Crescent Isle base xD XD

Is there really a ny difference between the gamecube and dreamcast version?

I was going to get the dreamcast version for quite some time...but I figured I MIGHT just get a gamecube (only for eternal darkness) and Skies of Arcadia might be better on gamecube.

Well there are few more side-quests, so I've heard.

I've had Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast, same with Grandia II and both of them are great games. Personally, I think Skies of Arcadia had the one thing missing from (Note : I am prepared to be flamed to Hell for what I'm about to say.) the Final Fantasy games - Airship battles. As Duo said, once you get the Delphinus, with it's Moon stone cannon (And have a couple of arcwhale torpedoes.), let's just say anything you fight against is toast.

Searching for the crew of your ship, reminding me a little of the soldier searching and recruitment from Konami's Suikoden series. Each new crewmember has an ability which increases all sorts of stats for your ship in battle, and you can summon them in battle as well, making the whole crew recruiting a good idea.

I've heard of the Gamecube port, but haven't played it. Some of the differences I've heard, is more side quests, and the amount of random encounters has been cut.

Both Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II are great games, on one of the greatest systems, the Dreamcast (Yes, I'm a Dreamcast fan, got a problem with that?), but if I had to choose between the two, it'd be Skies of Arcadia for one simple reason - Airship battles.

Dreamcast fan here too :-D
I read some where that because the gamecube version is on only one disc
that the sound isn't as good and such. I can't wait until my dreamcast arrives in the mail, then I can play skies again. I'm going to assume that grandia 2 is better than grandia 3, because in my opinion 3 sucked (lol fighting with your mom who is like 21 years old :D)

Sega Dreamcast had very little rpg's released, here's the list of Usa rpg's released sorted by date of Usa release. It also lists Japan and Europe release dates for them. There is probably more rpg's for Dreamcast that didn't come out in Usa. This list is from rpgamer.com

Sega Dreamcast Japan U.S. Europe
Evolution 01.21.1999 12.1999 03.17.2000
Time Stalkers 07.29.1999 03.21.2000 11.10.2000
Shenmue 07.02.2000 12.01.2000
Skies of Arcadia 10.05.2000 11.14.2000 04.27.2001
Grandia II 02.21.2002 12.05.2000 02.23.2001
Evolution II Q4.2000
Phantasy Star Online 12.21.2000 01.30.2001 02.23.2001
Record of Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice 06.09.2000 03.08.2001 12.15.2000
Phantasy Star Online: Version 2 09.12.2001

I'm not familiar with those games. What are the best rpg's for Dreamcast? I've heard Skies of Arcadia and Grandia 2 mentioned before but how good are the other ones? This reminds me of Nintendo 64 where it mainly had both Zelda games, Ogre Battle 64, and Paper Mario, for top rpg's.

EDIT:
I've researched all Dreamcast Usa rpg's on Wikipedia and metacritic.com/games
They all got high reviews except I don't think Evolution 1, Evolution 2, and Time Stalkers got good reviews. I didn't know that Dreamcast released so many good rpg's in it's short lifespan?

By the way, why did the Dreamcast die?

I bought the game when it was out for about a few months or so. I have never finished it, something I regret. I am, however, stuck in an airship battle and it annoys the crap out of me :(

I've played the DC and GC versions. The GC version has less frequent random battles and a few more side quests, like others have mentioned. The DC version has better graphics (textures and clouds). Not a big difference though. It is great no matter what system you play it on!!

I love Skies of Arcadia and have both the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions. There is not a much difference between them other than the graphics seem a bit smoother on the Gamecube and as has already been stated there is a bit of added content so I would recommend anybody plays whichever version they are able to lay their hands on.

Of the other Dreamcast RPGs mentioned I would recommend Grandia 2 or the Evolution games. If you have only played the appalling PS2 port of Grandia 2 then in my opinion you have not really had a chance to play the game properly, I'm not sure what is wrong with it but I would compare it to the PS1 port of Final Fantasy 6, sure it is the same game as the Super Nintendo version but at the same time it is not.

The Evolution games are really quite fun old school dungeon crawlers, they are not going to win any awards for originality but they are not very long and will keep you entertained for the whole of their duration. Also they are available on Gamecube as Evolution Worlds so you do not even need to buy a Dreamcast to play them. Even tough you should.

Darn did not notice the date of the first post sorry!

YES, Arcadia was really terrible on the dreamcast but actually quite playable on gamecube. But Grandia 2 was better on the DC than ps2. It's weird.

Back when I played games on my GC I found Skies of Arcadia at my local Gamestop and was pleasantly surprised and very glad that I made the purchase. It's definitely on my top ten RPGs that I've played and now from what I've read on this thread about it being discontinued, it now makes the adventure even more special.
