JOHN WILLIAMS - BECAUSE THEY'RE YOUNG - 1960 - UNRELEASED SCORE / SFX
Remastering in Stereo from Mono Sources

The really first score from the Maestro for a feature film.

Score Composed by Johnny Williams
Song NOT Composed by Johnny Williams
Title Song by Jimmy Darren/Duane Eddy

James Darren sings the title song (not penned by Williams), Duane Eddy and the Rebels perform "Shazam", and Bobby Rydell adds "Swingin' School".

John Williams had served as a contract player in the Columbia Studios Orchestra; this was his first assignment as composer on a studio film. "[Morris] Stoloff asked me to do the entire score. And when the day came to record, he was ill, so he also asked me to conduct. Suddenly, I was conducting my own composition." Recalling the experience two decades later, Williams told the Boston Globe's Richard Dyer:

"There was a budget of about $3.50 for the music, and I took it on. I remember that what I wrote was jazzy — there was a fight sequence with bongo drums and things like that. The important thing about that picture is not that it was my first but that it was Tuesday Weld's. She's a terrific person and a wonderful performer whose career hasn't gone where it should have because of bad management."

In its review of the film, Variety noted that, "Technical credits provide good backing, including…Johnny Williams' music score."

"Another early Williams film ticked off the list.

This was a 1960 drama somewhere between the thematic of BLACKBOARD JUNGLE and a more general "youth-in-trouble"-type film with Dick Clark as the teacher trying to set his students straight. Well, it's not a very good film. Overly moralistic, hammy perfomances and a scatterbrained plot that doesn't really know where it's going. But there IS a certain degree of ambition involved.

It also seems designed to showcase the talents of Duane Eddy & The Rebels as well as James Darren, who both feature as performers at the obligatory prom party. Darren, who would later perform in the Williams-scored GIDGET GOES TO ROME, performs the title song (not composed by Williams).

The soundtrack consists of a few 50's style rock'n'roll tunes, while Williams' score proper is quite sparse. However, there's some fine music in the brief snippets there are -- the crime jazz music for the "rebels" (complete with funky tamtam drums), the sweet love theme, the arrangements of the James Darren song throughout (esp. over the main titles) and an absolutely gorgeous theme for the relationship between Clark and his orphan nephew Erik. And a hilarious waltz (used as counterpoint?) for the brawl between two fiery high school guys."

Is this only me or is there something to know about RShare to get the link working ? It's been quite some time I didn't use it and I seem to end up on some screen that only ask what I want to upload.

I had downloaded this previously but tried it again now. Using the web browser I was unable to get the file, and JDownloader showed "Temporary unavailable" at first, but after a few retries it worked; slow but it's working.
