Digital release of Alan Silvestri's score for Marvel's The Avengers (2012).
Due to be out tomorrow in the UK, May 1st in the US (CD only from INTRADA by the looks of it, with an extra track "Interrogation" and slightly longer other tracks), and Ireland had it out since the 20th, that's why I've got it now.
The original UK/ROI release that I've got has the title Avengers Assemble (the UK title for the film) but I've changed it to Marvel's The Avengers and added the US cover.

Tracklist:
1. "Arrival" 2:59
2. "Doors Open From Both Sides" 2:48
3. "Tunnel Chase" 2:36
4. "Stark Goes Green" 2:41
5. "Helicarrier" 2:09
6. "Subjugation" 3:00
7. "Don't Take My Stuff" 4:42
8. "Red Ledger" 5:11
9. "Assault" 4:26
10. "They Called It" 2:41
11. "Performance Issues" 3:35
12. "Seeing, Not Believing" 4:25
13. "Assemble" 4:31
14. "I Got a Ride" 4:00
15. "A Little Help" 3:14
16. "One Way Trip" 5:50
17. "A Promise" 3:34
18. "The Avengers" 2:03
Total length:
1:04:25

BONUS TRACK: "Some Assembly Required (Post-Credits Teaser Trailer Music, BDRip w/slight SFX)" 0:44

Format: MP3 320kbps

Just finished listening to it. It starts off a little slow, but the good stuff does kick in a little before half way through the score and it sounds frickin epic and awesome. I'm curious to know which track is used during Hulk's attack on the Helicarrier. I'm assuming it's "Seeing, Not Believing", since the title and the monstrous-bombastic sound can easily associate with the Hulk, but the last minute of "Assault" would sound awesome for the fight between Hulk and Thor.

Anyway, awesome score! And I hope we get that extra track "Interrogation" soon; and hopefully a complete score in the future! :D

Isn't this the complete score?

I really doubt it. Most commercially released scores come nowhere near "complete". Or expanded. Or quartered, or...

So, the Intrada release will be mostly this, but with an extra track, and longer tracks? How is that right?

Agreed completely! Even my boyfriend said it was generic while I played it yesterday. At least Captain America had a decent theme, although it was under-used and wasn't given the flowery orchestration it could have during the meat of the score (that was left to the march). I'll take Wrath of the Titans over Avengers by far, which is quite a shame. At least Wrath has a solid theme that I remember by the end and start to hum!

Faleel

Hopefully the material on the Intrada disc improves it somehow.

ajl3
04-24-2012, 03:06 AM
His Predators soundtrack was pretty solid (certainly better than the movie), even if it was just the old themes remixed with electronics/guitar. So far, this stuff is generic but decent, with the exception of "A Promise," which seems like it has actual effort put into it.

Edit: Having listened to all of it, yep, "generic but competent" describes it best EXCEPT for the beginning of "A Promise," the main "Avengers Theme," and that cue from "Avengers Assemble" that uses Captain America's theme but speeds it up. I do like the bombast he puts into the main theme, but literally more than half of the tracks sound like reusing the same cues over and over.

I'm sure that the Intrada CD with the longer cues must have a better development on the material. Wheddon is happy of the score, and he knows a lot about scores, so in the movie it must sound incredible.

This is the first time I've gotten the score before seeing the movie... I'll have to see if this makes the score during the movie more enjoyable or more boring.

I've done this many times.

When you actually have seen the film, the soundtrack tends to stand out more as you are able to picture the scene when the music plays.

A good case to me on this is the the last two bond scores from David Arnold. Without seeing the films, the scores tend note to have much to say.

tom_1984
04-24-2012, 08:13 AM
I hear noises during several tracks. do you?

Silvestri wasted opportunity for magnifecent score. I heard only Cap theme, no Hulk, Iron Man or Thor theme - even a few seconds...

On the other hand, I heard Lara Croft and Eraser theme...

Thank you very much!! Can't wait for the movie or to hear this!!!

RadMax
04-24-2012, 10:23 AM
@jarosHulk28 - that's interesting, thanks for that infos...

i guess i was expecting a bit more than what he did with Captain America TFA to this so in comparison to that i felt a bit disappointed, i love what he did to the Van Helsing score with the added choral touches which added more depths to the score. it's still bombastic orchestral score having been able to utilize 70 or more pieces but perhaps hearing the music side by side with the film might change my current opinion but it remains to be seen. but not the score will deter me from ever seeing this film and enjoy it.

we've booked an IMAX seat 3 weeks prior and that's more wait than i can handle right now, tomorrow i'd say is the big day for us!

I can already tell I'm not going to like this, given what people are saying about it. I'll still give it a listen, but I just know I won't like it. I was extremely let down when I found out Silvestri was composing this. The only good score if his I can recall is Forrest Gump

jaroshulk28
04-24-2012, 02:24 PM
I'm sure the music will narrate the movie wonderfully. Joss said so himself. That's the beauty of Silvestri. He still makes a FILM SCORE. Unlike guys like Steve Jablonsky who only compose trailer music for each scene of the movie. It's alway just slow progression with those guys until you get a really epic sound in the end; then they're like "Okay, that sounds good enough!"

I've learned to enjoy certain cues in about every track of this score, so hopefully after seeing it in theaters and hearing the extended cues on the Intrada release, we will all have a better appreciation for it.

RadMax
04-24-2012, 02:51 PM
well i'll take this particular score any day over Jablonsky's Battleship. as far as score goes among my Silvestri favorites includes, "Back to the Future", "Stuart Little", "Forrest Gump", "Predator", "Van Helsing", "Mouse Hunt", "The Polar Express", "Judge Dredd", and "Captain America TFA".

it would be interesting to find out how the Intrada/Hollywood release will sound like or would differ...

yes, finally tomorrow is the big day!

Biggs v.2
04-24-2012, 03:02 PM
This is a pretty disappointing score, to be honest. Silvestri's GI:JOE was really great, so surprised he's just running numbers on this score. What a lost opportunity.

Iron Man 2 score is quite good, and he's a great composer, but he doesn't get good projects. And yes, the Predators was probably on purpose, he wanted a similar style of score for the movie.

benuit

I've heard that score and I'm really sorry to say this music is incredibly trivial.
I usually like Alan Silvestris work but this is beyond the pale, completely uninspired, just loud and boring.
The coarse Thor, the narcissist Tony Stark, the naive Captain America, the schizophrenic Hulk,
this unique group of sociopaths would really deserves a better music. A lost opportunity.

What's about John Ottman? Fantatic work for Astroboy, Fantastic Four and X-Men 2.

Debney, are you kidding me? He's a fraud of a composer and he basically copy-pasted Silvestri's Predator for Predators. Come on!
No, the only good thing about the "Predator" score is the theme, the rest is typically 80's action scoring. Debneys score is quite independent, he cited Silvestri,
but he did not copy his work.

I will say that this discussion finally motivated me to track down the Judge Dredd score... And holy shit! How did Silvestri manage that opus for a movie infected with Rob Schneider and for The Avengers he manages to drop this mediocrity? AGHHHH!!!

Seriously though, Judge Dredd is awesome action scoring. If only...

i love some of John Debney film scores, i guess he's not just receiving better film score projects lately and you can't blame a composer as he must also adhere to the producers or directors wishes creatively. the Iron Man 2 score IMO is far better than IM but you can't even hardly noticed it in the film being overpowered by the SFX.

as for this score i'm a bit dismay but i love how "The Avengers" theme is simple yet it has that intoxicating effect making you humm along wit it.

" dam, dararam dam ram, dara ram dam dam, dara ram dam dam.....dam dararararam dararam..."

Debney, are you kidding me? He's a fraud of a composer and he basically copy-pasted Silvestri's Predator for Predators. Come on!

Lair, Cutthroat Island, and The Passion of the Christ would like to have a word with you. (And Silvestri is credited for his theme in "Predators." That one lies solely on the producers.)

At least Wrath has a solid theme that I remember by the end and start to hum!I had the exact same opinion on the Captain America score. Silvestri composed a wonderful theme that was completely under-used.

I can already tell I'm not going to like this, given what people are saying about it. I'll still give it a listen, but I just know I won't like it. I was extremely let down when I found out Silvestri was composing this. The only good score if his I can recall is Forrest GumpWhat? Who doesn't like Back to the Future?

WOW! just mind blowing!! just fresh from the premier and i'm totally blown away by how Whedon made this film a kick ass and every fanboys dream movie....while i have some disappointments in my initial reaction hearing the music by Silvestri first hand, i have completely change my opinion about it now hearing it side by side with the film. while one may use all technicalities and all to show their dismay with it, to me it just turned moot. the score serve the film well and it has done justice where it is needed.

seeing how legions of folks come out to support it with their content and enjoyment with the film makes it all the more certain that they'll be back for more as i will be, lol

btw(no offense) it thus included trailers for both the bat and the spider, but so far it doesn't look epic compared to what you'll get with this Whedon masterpiece.

As for The Avengers, I thought Silvestri's score to be barely noticeable in the movie. I mean it doesn't really stand out, except maybe the main theme. And sadly it lacks an epic opening credits, a la Superman or X-Men.

I am remarkably unimpressed with Silvestri's music, as a stand alone score. Where has the composer of "Predator" and "Back to the Future gone?" Jablonsky's "Battleship" score, while not one for the ages, works far better. Ironic thing is "Avengers" which is undoubtedly the better movie has a weaker score than "Battleship" which looks awful.

Can you hear the score well for the majority of the film?

surprisingly yes i did! maybe it's because it's an IMAX with really crystal clear sound, lol... IMO it may work better being a music accompaniment to film rather than a stand alone but nevertheless it's not Silvestri's best effort but it's still good and commendable. so i stand by what i said that it serve the film well and it's a good score altogether.

while i adore some of Jablonsky's other works(Steamboy, Transformers, D-War...) "Battleship" IMO is a loose, lame, clone of his Transformers DOTM score.[COLOR="Silver"]

if you have doubts about the score? have faith in the film, go out and watch it and you'll surely have one heck of a thrill ride from start to finish. then talk about the score later you might even changed your opinion about it.

Alrigth, Intrada released samples of their release, and the big noticeable difference in the the sample tracks they offered was in "Tunnel Chase" which sounds even better than the original mix. The score makes much more sense after watching this amazing flick. Saw it 4 times in 3 days. It's frikking unbelievable. And I liked the score a lot better afterwards. The only downside of the score is that album edits are similar to film edits, which makes the action pause a lot. May have been better if Silvestri presented the music in suites.

Agreed. The speakers in IMAX theaters are quite good. I still don't want to let Hollywood off the hook from providing quality sound mix on films in regular releases. Soon everything will be released in IMAX, at least most of the big films, and I don't want to spend the extra money on every film. I think it will be a lot longer before every big film uses an IMAX camera and even then certain ones are better in imax than others.

I am curious how people who saw it in IMAX or 3D (or both) compare the use of those formats to other recent films.

RadMax
05-01-2012, 12:34 AM
we don't have much IMAX theaters yet and going there means you really have to do an extra effort to do so like driving 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic, tickets are also relatively higher compared to both the Digital 3D or the regular 2D. but as a huge fan of the comic book team character it's like a dream come true to me seeing it come to life on the big screen so naturally IMAX is my best option.

but as a casual movie fan, it is okay to see it on 2D (as i have seen it) but in my case i enjoyed the fact that the 3D offers a better view of the film. night scenes can't hardly be noticed on the part where it's too dark (well maybe it could just be the film that had been sent on that particular theater, not sure though but if you have the means so why not be generous for once, lol) while better details can be seen on the much bigger screen size being the IMX. there's a lot of great scenes that deserves to be seen on a bigger and clearer picture add that with a crystal clear sound then voila, you have an exciting and enjoyable date on this years much talked about superhero ensemble of the year. :)

just my opinion from really being happy how the movie turned out.

and you'll have it in just 3 more days!

as far as i can tell, only piece of music missing from this release is the piece when Banner is being led by the little girl to the hut where he meets black widow, anyone been able to find this anywhere?
Aside from that, the beginning of the first track 'Arrival' is used several times throughout the movie, but i believe that the rest of the score is included in this release.

EDIT: Seems there's another track 'interrogation' which is appearing on some listings somewhere which is not included in this release - the tracklisting on this is in chronological order that it is in the movie, and interrogation seems to be in the right place, so maybe that track is all we need? anyone have any luck finding it? But i still think it's a lazy composition from Silvestri, wish he had come up with the same themes, but done more with the orchestrations - could have assigned different instruments to each character, like a electric guitar for iron man, choir for thor, trumpets for Cap, and maybe drums or percussion for The Hulk - then when each of them was on screen, use their assigned instrument more, so that when they finally do assemble during the climactic battle, all on screen, it would be a complete piece of music, but no, generic, lazy, silvestri. I wept when i read his name on the first posters, and I still wish they had gone with someone else, but i do think it's at least better than what he did on Captain America.

Awesome ideas on the music, that would have been sweet. Yeah, I wish he had weaved the themes in the action music here and given it some motifs at least to weave together. The more I listen to lush orchestral scores and recognize what those composers can do with the orchestra, the more I miss it when it isn't there. I listened to The Red Canvas again the other day and I wish there was some of that style of action writing here. It would really have propelled it to new heights.

I also would be interested in a rip of the CD, perhaps the score will be more enjoyable thanks to what sounds like better mastering by Intrada.

agreed! i would love to have him at least incorporated some choral chants / chorus to make it sound more epic or grander in scale. (Anime & VGM composers specially Japanese composers are great with that form) :D

anyway it's alright for me. it works well on the film and that's a big consolation i guess.

I've been listening to Kid Icarus Uprising and that is the perfect example of a quality score I was missing here. Grab it in the VGM section. Some amazing orchestral work, including some great action writing.

i would gladly check it out. thanks! :D

I'll try to upload it in both. I'm not great at doing that stuff, but I'll try. The re-edits are pretty good for the most part. The only one I don't like is "A Little Help". As for the booklet, it's great. Joss Whedon actually gives a deep heart-felt 2 page analysis on Silvestri's scoring. I'll try to post pics later.

I too would like to see an upload of the Intrada CD. I downloaded the digital version(was gonna buy it on Amazon or iTunes but I might hold out for the Intrada if it's worth it)and I kinda liked the score. I was hoping to hear Captain America's march theme a bit since Alan Silvestri scored TFA as well, but I only heard little snippits of it. I'm hoping in the extended CD they'll be more of it. Or is that it for the entire score? Anyone know?

Just got back from seeing this movie, which was a pretty fun flick. An interesting observation: the moments that got the biggest applause from the audience were all accompanied by Silvestri's Avengers theme. The music is used to great effect, and I was glad to see that the credits were kicked off with score material rather than some random pop song.

OMG, applause from the audience? That's always the worst thing that could happen in a movie theater...put your hands together in your own time and place...I say..

But it was fun, was it? 3D was pretty good and shots were really made in a way that 3D dit have an extra effect to the whole experience...
Music was nice, but need to hear it apart from the movie!

I'm assuming mostly everyone is digging this OST a lot more after watching the film over a hundred times :D

You could be right because I knew someone who is now into film score because of this film and the music. Even my grandson actually bought a cd of the soundtrack and the score album.
