I was nearly put off by the word ambient, fearing it would mean unobtrusive and boring, but it is melodic and enjoyable listening. I can imagine being transported back to the remote parts of Japan with cute animals. Thanks for sharing Sirusjr.

I agree; "ambient" is a word I'd use to describe probably five or ten minutes of this score at most. For most of its duration, this is Hattori at his most lyrical.

Hattori the superlative orchestrator and Hattori the King of action get a fair bit of time in the limelight, but Hattori the sensitive tunesmith rarely does. If I had to name a Japanese composer who can spin a melody like no other, I'd have to choose Michiru Oshima - who has her fair share of symphonic documentary scores under her belt... But Hattori, now there's a fellow who's still getting better despite being almost thirty years into his professional music career. :)

Others have taken issue with my use of the word ambient for this and scores like Journey. I would appreciate a better word to use instead that is more accurate. In other cases more recently I have used words like subdued and restrained which may be more appropriate. I appreciate the English tracklisting but it would be much more useful if it was posted by itself so I could easily grab it and apply it to the tags.
