Well, coincidently, here in my hometown (in Germany), the movie "Nosferatu" is going to be played twice this week in our local cinema. That alone wouldn't be reason for me to mention it. It's because this silent movie will be played with our local symhpony orchestra playing the background music LIVE, and, you guessed it: they are going to play James Bernard's score!

I'm thinking about seeing it for two reasons: I have never seen the movie before, and I love James Bernard's music (I have almost all of his Hammer music scores!)

Oh my! As a fan of both the movie and the composer, I wasn't aware of the fact Bernard wrote a score for the Murnau movie. Thanx so much for this!

Just a question, is this music newly original composed by James Bernard for the movie or is another recording of the original music by Hans Erdmann?

kobalski

Sanico, you will not be disappointed, this is truely a very unique score. It sure was a great opportunity for Bernard to score this great silent movie classic, and if you remember, when composing his first Dracula theme for the Hammer movie (1958), his main 3-note theme was a musical version of the name "Dracula" (Drah-cu-la), and the same thing is true for his Nosferatu theme (Noss-fe-rah-tu).
If you look on imdb.com, his Nosferatu score is listed on the bottom (Nosferatu, 1922), implicating that this was his first score, but in 1922, James Bernard wasn't even born! It was, in fact, his final movie score, a fitting testimony for a great composer!

Thanks for the infos soundtrekker. I haven't heard any Bernard score. I know that he was one of the composers of choice on those hammer studio movies, but apart of it my familiarity of his music is pretty much nonexistent, and somehow i have this feeling that i'm missing a lot of great music!

Sanico, several Hammer Film scores have been uploaded here on the shrine. For starters, I would recommend WildwoodPark's still working link to "The Hammer Film Complilation Vol. 1":

Thread 88869

Also, there is a thread dedicated just to Hammer Film music, including many scores by James Bernard, which was started last year (can't find it right now, sorry!).

Best regards,
