It's probably the PS2. See if you can take it back. I got a faulty PS2 also, but luckily I had a 1 year warranty with EB, so I got to exchange it for another one. At my local EB, they get about 40% of their PS2's back. Sony rushed 'em out so that Sega wouldn't get a foothold on the market, so that's the reason so many of 'em are buggy.

If you look in the PS2's owner guide it says the some DVDs are not workable with the PS2. If the DVD is then the lens on the PS2 might need to be cleaned, or the disc is damaged.

EDIT: You can buy cleaner discs at stores for usually $4-10. And if the disc is dirty some CD stores have polishers you can use.

Then it's probably trhe PS2's laser lens. Get a cleaner CD and put it in.

Before you get all worried about it I would try using the DVD's with someone else's PS2. That might give you a better idea what the problem is.

your ps2 might be getting too hot as well. if you have it sitting flat, then try putting it on something so that air can flow beneath it, such as on a milk crate (by the way, it's a $2000 fine to steal a milk crate, crazy, eh?) anyways, i know that a ps2 can get too hot if it's on a carpet, or if it's just in a kind of enclosed area, or anything else that could trap heat.
