Burnie,
Howdy:), what were the 'power' problems, no money, or the overhead lines broke?

I sent Paul a PM, I think it could be one of 2 problems, either, he hasn't yet organised the 'box' to download into, [which may become a problem, if here becomes all he wants it to be], or more likely, knowing me... I need the url of Shrine to get the torrent to work :)

Did you notice a few of my torrents?, as you can guess there aren't that many covers, I still need - BIG THANKS!!! - and the 'archives' proved popular.
As I didn't make them 'site only', are you able to bring them here for me, so other can use them as well?

Remember I still owe you a few favours, so feel free to ask, if I have, I will put them up at the 'nut-tree'

Don't know anything about organising a box??? Here's how I share files using WinZip.

To Upload Files using Rapid Share.

1) Copy/paste files into USB stick.
2) Open up Winzip.
3) Open New archive.
4) Type in the name of your archive eg Rookie.
5) In Add, browse and find the songs you wish to put into Rookie folder. Select all and press ok.
6) Open archive to check your results.
7) Go to RapidShare or other filehost. Click Upload.
8) Click the winzip file you wish to upload from USB stick, ok and wait for upload to begin and finish.
Could take 5 - 10 minutes or more. Be patient. If it stops, start again.
9) Refresh page and click File manager and select your new file and click downloadlink export (selected file). Copy the coded address.
10) Paste file and code it:
paste details or whatever the site allows and hit return.

Works for me. I don't do or understand torrents. That's something else altogether. Hope this helps Hew1tt. The thing I always miss is putting it into my USB stick first. I'll see if I can do a quick one - a song or something.

---------- Post added at 11:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:14 AM ----------

Done steps 1 - 8. Waiting for Rapidshare to do it's job....By the way, every fan shoulod pick up the latest SFX bookazine. 180 pages on DW fandom written by fans....ad over...now, pasting. Adding spoiler box.

https://rapidshare.com/files/1478585941/Brig_s_Tribute.ZIP

Should work...and it does. Simple.
The spoiler box is spoiler then code in brackets [] then you add your links then /code again, then /spoiler in brackets [] at the end.

Paul,

I understand the process, and happy to do it.. but this is the sticky bit for me.....

7) Go to RapidShare or other filehost. Click Upload’.

I don't have a Filehost account, and truth be told, I don't wish to pay for an account, only to have what has been occurring across the net, kill the account the next day.... call me Chicken Little 'the sky is falling, the sky is falling' :)

I 'll see if Shrine can accept torrents directly into their forums :)

...Or you cn use Mediafire which is totally free. No cost - but could be limited to around 200mb/2gb - more than enough for audios.

Want to say sorry for my smugness that may have appeared on other sites. While it's good to have most of everything that BF releases, it is only by YOUR efforts of uploading that I have anything at all. When Filesonic went down, I slightly promoted this site because Radioguy (from Tehparadox) who upped all his stuff did so on Filesonic and I felt sorry for him, so with all the links here, I told anyone who have missed out to come here. But, in re-reading what I wrote, it did make me sound a bit 6th doctorish. So sorry if that happened in anyone's viewpoint.
You'se guys (and girls) are fantastic!!!!

We had record snow storm, 12 inches in day. We are at sea level in a temperate climate. We don't get snow, we get a light powder dusting. So the snow melted and froze into ice over night, silver thaw. That never happens either. Trees falling everywhere. Right across the street, a tree took down the powerline. Did not break the wire, just the insulation. Lots of arcing, set fire to the tree. Which blew the neighborhood transformer. It was quite a sight, my landlord screaming louder than the fire engines; "I told you to cut that tree down!" Five days, no heat, no lights.

As for money, don't have any. Never needed it. I live small and am adorably cuddly. Gray, wrinkled, and thread bare, but still lovable.

What is "a box" that you are talking about? Are you talking about a seedbox? That requires hardware, I think.

I'm kind of busy cataloging classic cookery tv shows. Remember when it was about recipes, how to make it, and always with a glass of wine in hand? Julia Child, Graham Kerr, Keith Floyd, ect... They put the fun in food.

Most all of the file hosts allow free uploads. Problem is the free links only last 30 days, or 30 days after the last download. Free file hosts with no time limit: Keepandshare, ziddu, scribd... I can see at least one more in my mind, but I can't read the sitename.

sharing re-upped torrent files here. I would have to d/l and then u/l, burns a lot of bandwidth for things I've not got time to listen to (big backlog already). I've discovered that if I turn on the 10-hour novelization reading and just let it run, I will get the gist of it by the end of the day - no matter what else is going on. :)

Burnie,

The weather has been crazy everywhere, we have been getting storms in the middle of summer, heavy rain, then the next day its 27 degrees c [86f]
Most of my comments were musing aloud... I will try to use mediafire....

Currently I am about 6 covers short of a full Big Finish catalogue, in both DW and related audios., it was more of a question of what I could repay you with.
I am about to have Back Surgery, so I can't work for the next 6 or so weeks - to stop going mad, I will be listening to audios 20 hours a day, maybe I too will
finish listing to all my downloads :)

Paul,

I will take your advise and see if I can teach myself a new skill.... is there anything you would like on CD or DVD?, happy to send anything to you
I remember you said you had limited space.... but a disc of 4gig of audios, is always good to receive :)

You know, I never understood how those magnet things worked. That and the edonkey link things. Are they just all torrent-related?
And brave of you guys to use Torrents. As for me, I think I'll just stay hiding under the TARDIS console next to Five if anyone needs me.

I have to agree with you guys. There has been sone seriously weird weather stuff going. I mean, I was watching the world news on Friday night and they were talking about snow in different parts of the world this time of the year that normally don't get snow! I'm kicking myself because I can't remember any of the location names, but I remember one of them showed a frozen ocean wave and both my mom and I were just 'O__o Whoa!'.

That way I won't be advertising anyone's links (except for maybe my own, but when I do that, they'll only be temporary anyway and will be deleted my yours truly). I'd prefer not to share this thread with others, just for the sake of keeping it, at the original links, safe.

Also, thanks ^_^ When I get all of my links properly put on that file and organized, I'll repost it here for you guys to use as you see fit / when somene asks / if you need an online backup.

Mediafire is VERY easy to use. As a free, unregistered user or register and make an account. I prefer the free, unregistered myself.
Go to the site, click the big grey folder (there's a blue arrow box pointing to it that says 'Click here to start uploading'), click the BIG + sign, select the files you want to upload, upload, get the links, share the links, and there you are.

Nobber, if it makes you feel any better, I didn't tell you off about the play. Me? I'm a sucker for hearing the (past) Doctor's voices on stuff. *^_^* So thank you for sharing that.

Something to do with dragging the files from the same location as the Winzip, I guess. I tried adding files from my computer to the Winzio I keep on my USB and it didn't work.

Thanks for that. Wrong movie. They made a film from the TV series with same name. You will know the TV series as it has John Cleese in it trying to smuggle a nuclear bomb in a coffin. It is really funny and worth watching just for all the British comedy stars.

oh, well, will look again later.

Can I just confirm what you're after. All I can find with reference to a film is this one Whoops Apocalypse (1988) - IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092211/) Can't find anything that seems to be an omnibus of the series.

I've noticed a lot of people wondering about fileshare sites. Personally, I like 4shared, as it's free to register, and you have a 20Gb 'space' to put whatever you like in, and it looks like an normal file explorer window - it's like having a small, remote hard-drive. Easy to use and flexible...

I have doen a quick 'n' dirty comparison of the most commonly used sharing sites for y'all.

I've also seen several people worried about torrents, or not knowing what torrents actually are, so I'll try to explain it:

A .torrent file is a tiny file that simply contains (mostly) a list of files, and a list of torrent trackers. For example, if someone wanted to share season 1 of their favourite tv show, they would use their torrent client program to make a .torrent file. The sharer would need to tell the torrent client which tracker(s) they planned on using for the torrent, and the client program would construct the .torrent file.

The sharer then uploads that .torrent file to a tracker site, and depending on the site, will either redownload it and open it, or just open the one they created in their torrent client program.

The client program then checks that the sharer has all the required files, connects to the tracker, and tells the tracker that it is a seed, or someone that has the whole torrent.

Now, a 2nd person finds the torrent on the torrent tracker website and decides they would like to download it. The downloader grabs the small .torrent file from the tracker and opens it in their client program. It doesn't have to be the same client program, as all torrent clients should be compatible with each other. The downloader's client gets the list of required files from the .torrent file.

The downloader's client program then gets the tracker information from the .torrent file, and connects to the tracker as a 'leech' (someone who doesn't have the whole torrent). The tracker tells the client which seeds and leechers have the parts of the torrent that haven't been downloaded yet. The client then requests those 'pieces' directly from the seed's client program.

During the initial seeding process, the seed's client will try to upload different parts of the whole torrent to different leeches, so that those pieces can then be shared between the leeches while the seed uploads new pieces to the leeches. This allows the torrent to be shared as fast as possible.

Admittedly, because each client program needs to know the IP address of the people it's downloading from or sharing with, some companies worried about copyright might grab a list of those IP addresses in order to send warnings, but this is pretty rare. The file sharing sites listed above probably also store a list of IP addresses that download files, and would probably give that list to a copyright holder that asked for it, so using the file sharing sites is no more or less dangerous than using torrents.

Private trackers, that require you to register, are generally safer, as the list of torrents doesn't show on most search engines or torrent search sites. These trackers generally have strict rules about sharing though. When you have finished downloading a torrent, you are often required to seed (share) for a certain amount of time, or a certain amount of data. For example, most private trackers have a 'ratio' system, where you are required to upload at least as much as you download (an upload/download ratio of 1.0).

Hope all that makes sense, and hasn't confused anyone more than they were already...

For those who don't know about torrents, and are interested in starting with them, I'd strongly suggest being careful when using them. None of the parties involved in what we like here seem to be overly concerned right now about tracking down individuals who are sharing. But this is very much not the case with other software, games, music, tv, movies, etc. There are companies that can be hired who do nothing but monitor torrents to collect the IP addresses of people who use them. Because, like it or not, when you use a torrent, you're providing the files to others, too, which is what they are most concerned about. And anyone who connects to you to either share a file with you or to leech it from you has access to your IP address. And that means that those comnpanies -- and their clients -- can get your IP address, too.

There are ways to use torrents more safely, though nothing is 100% safe. For one thing, there's a program called PeerBlocker (Google it), which regularly donwnloads a watch list of known bad IP addresses (usually the companies or people who are doing the tracking), and blocks them from connecting to you with bittorrent programs. So, theoretically, you're much safer, because they can't find you as easily. But, if a there's a new IP address that's not yet on the list, they can still connect to you, and get your IP address that way. But it's safer than NOT using it!

There are also companies that you can pay to hide your IP address by bouncing you around computers around the world.

And for those in the US, be aware that things are about to dramatically change for bittorrent. Most of the major internet providers have entered into an agreement with the movie, TV and music studios to try to stop bittorrent users. The studios will actively use tracking companies to gather lists of people using torrents of copyrighted materials. The ISP's will be setting up a series of steps they will take to notify and punish users who use those torrents. This has already started on a small scale. But it's about to become much bigger in the US in the next month or two, with much more specific regulation goign into effect. So, if you use torrents for other stuff, you may want to be a lot more careful soon.

Could do, but the current plan is for myself and evilmonk to pool resources, and put up the best quality that either of us have. The aim is to have every main-series adventure with a bitrate of at least 256kbps, but I have a lot that are below that quality (for anyone interested, you can see my list here (http://stefancole.com/DW/BF-Filelist.php)), and I'd like to upgrade those. I realise that some people don't worry about the audio quality (as long as it can be heard), and prefer the smallest possible file size to conserve hard-drive space. I used to be the same until I got a 1Tb external USB hard drive, now it's not an issue (I've since filled one 1Tb drive exclusively with DW stuff and had to get a second 1Tb drive!).

As both evilmonk and I suffer from a restricted upload bandwidth, it seemed sensible to just upload the best quality ones that each of us have, avoiding posting two versions of the same one.

Not sure why you would need them on different fileshare servers though. You don't need an account to download from any of them (as far as I know), they all allow downloading without registering or creating an account. If you see my table at the top of the page, some of them even allow you to upload without an account. I have an account on 4Shared, so that is my preferred method, and none of my links on there have ever been removed (although I may need to manually remove some of the older ones to fit more on there).

If anyone can provide better quality that the ones on my list, and doesn't mind sharing, please compare with evilmonk too. ;)

[All my stuff will be in 128 as I can't tell the diff between 320 and 128 and - in radio - all our 28,000 songs are 128 as that's all we need. If someone can show me in 320 that I'm missing something (a cat meowing in background...better music...etc...) then I might be convinced.

I've never had any real luck with that but I tried again. Repeatedly. If the pages loaded at all, it was the same 'File Blocked for Violation'. Often, I couldn't connect to any site. Sigh...

Edit to add: I got some advice and managed to get it working. Can't say I've ever heard of something like that happening before.

Edit to add a second time: It turns out it will also work if you manually copy and paste the link into your browser rather than just right clicking it. The problem seems to be common if you're using a jailbroken i device to dl apps using Installous. It is also possible that if you're using Chrome (I'm not) all MF links anonymously redirected are being shown the bogus page. MF has apparently tried to distance themselves from MU and have gone overboard in their cautions. Inconvenient at best.

Sorry SMeLTaR, Having problem with your links...
Trying the last one, I enter the captcha, validate it, wait 30 seconds, then hit the download link, only to get:

414 Request-URI Too Large
It looks like the site is trying to throw the actual file onto the end of the url, as it is hundreds of characters long, filled with random letters, numbers, chinese letters, etc...
Anyone else experiencing problems?

Not sure what's causing it, but I get a similar result (or rather, lack of result) in different browsers...

Nightly (64-bit Firefox): Like Chrome, the download link produces the same huge long URL with chinese characters, but I get a "The Connection was reset" error instead. 'Try Again' button or refresh does nothing...

IE 9.0 (64-bit): On the 1st page, can't click the 'Free' image, but the button below it works. Can't click the 'Validate Captcha' link, so cannot progress past this point. I hate using IE, and every time I open it, I find it fails on things like this.

I usually have Opera and Safari installed (I like to use all 5 browsers to compatibility-check my own websites), but following a recent OS re-install, I haven't put these two back on yet.

If you don't have them, grab 'em here:

Works fine here. The free download is only available for 5 minutes. Perhaps that's causing the confusion. Why not try Mediafire??? It's all free.

Just tried again, and still getting the same problem. After validating the captcha, then (after the 30-second wait), I click to download, it changes my browser's URL bar to:

Note, copy-pasting from Chrome's URL bar changes most non-standard characters to %xx codes, where xx is the hexidecimal code for that character...

As far as I understand it, it's a thread for those who dislike their links vanishing. As such, we generally avoid using 'anonymous' links on sharing sites (which can last only a few days, then stop working), and try to post links from accounts on those sites which don't do this.
As these are non-anonymous links, we would rather keep it as secret as possible to prevent the accounts being blocked or reported. This thread is therefore relatively hidden, and often only found by PM invitation.

might want to start by removing the name from this thread - the tv series name so it doesn't come up in a search

apart from that - we may have someone monitoring this thread too

I'm confused cos I didn't use the tv series name. Links removed now, in paranoia. Thanks for the heads-up.

i meant that you had used the tv series name in the spoiler box - we need to keep that out of this thread altogether. Someone may have just accidentally come across it.

I really didn't... that would be thread suicide! I gave the story names using all substitute words. Apologies if I'm misunderstanding you tonight, evilmonk.

Let's try that again with just a number in the filename. If these links go quickly then something is definitely up, wouldn't you say?

ok something weird going on cos i bookmarked those two links and just checked - and i can still dl them - even though it insists that one of them is now private...

maybe it's a problem with mf glitching for some of us??

thisismarcus

I switched them to private following besthead's feedback. Have undone that now and reinstated the links in my previous post to get more feedback on whether folk can or can't access the file.

Last night and today I was still able to download my own uploads... would that be the case if they were blocked?

Jamdoggy

Sorry, just tried and got 'File blocked' on both of them...

Wondering if somehow our IP's have been 'banned' so that it shows this message for any files we try to access on MF. When it says 'File Blocked for violation', is it my violation or yours?

Could be. I just sent my girlfriend those links to test and she had no trouble.

Can you access the MF files in post #105?

Curiouser and Curiouser...
After your last post, on a hunch, I tried in another browser (Nightly, 64-bit Firefox), and 'Bazinga! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skQGve3XksU)', it worked fine...

Hmm... I just tried in my normal browser (Chrome), and yes, they worked. How very confusing...

yep, can confirm. All files blocked for violation when i tried via Opera, all worked fine via chrome.

So the problem is with mf, not with the files themselves

I haven't been having these blockings either. I'm using Firefox Aurora, F.Y.I. It's a lot faster than their normal anyway. Though this problem seems rather Opera-based maybe?

Just a reminder about that Rapid locker: you can download fast without any premium nonsense with http://rapid8.com.

i don't know. The links i bookmarked last night work fine (via Opera), but click on the same links from here today and blocked for violation...

It's not like we get a unique ip addy for Opera unless we are using Opera Turbo - which i'm not...

just confusing

Guys, this seems to be the same problem I was reporting a short while back. When I click on the links, it says 'File blocked for violation'. When I right click the link, select copy link location, and paste in a new window, it works fine.

And for me, the problem is with Chrome, but it worked in 64-bit Firefox... I haven't tried in other browsers (yet).
I've even tried clearing the browser cache, and the Flash cache. Only thing left is cookies (I like to leave myself permanently logged into every site - bad habit, I know, so I haven't deleted all my cookies yet).

That begins to make sense...
It seems that it's the REFERER site that's blocked, so the links don't work when posted anywhere on these forums. As Drake pointed out, copying the URL and posting it in a new window means the browser doesn't report to MF that the links are from here, and so they work...
I wonder if using redirect sites, such as tinyurl, would stop this happening...?

At 9.56AM I received 6 emails from Mediafire regarding the 6 files I backed up there yesterday:

The file (CDBackup26-2.rar) violates the MediaFire Terms of Service. Due to it being distributed from your account, it has been removed. Also, a Strike has been placed against your account and can lead to a termination of service.

So the jig is up, at least for me.

It strikes me now that this thread isn't very private. I took the name of someone here who totally rocks the party on the impish site, Googled that and the tv series name and this page was the 4th result. Does anyone want to set up a private email group for discussing The Secret Kingdom instead?

What about twitter? Could set up private accounts just for this and just post new links in our feed....

No one can see the links unless we invite them to see our account - no risk of someone accidentally finding them and we aren't giving out personal info.

I would suggest though that we don't use the same username as on here

Wouldn't it be the case that only the twitter account owner would be able to post the links? How would others get their links posted? I generally don't use Twitter much (but I do have an account).

It seems the forum here has been compromised, and our links are being reported to the sites that host them, causing them to be removed. The ffshrine forum site does appear high in Google's search results anyway - nothing can be done about that. We really need a site that allows trusted members to share links, and that trusted position is by invitation-only. I'll look into this...

Anyone know how long links stay active at mediafire on the free account? The term 'limited' is listed.

I'm hopefully looking for a share site that keeps links active for such free accounts. Are there any out there?

Cheers

Sorry I'm a bit late to reply to this one, but ever think of trying kiwi6.com? Sure to keep your files around you have to get an account, but it's super easy to use, >>>free<<< (though you have to keep the file size a little small, under 100 mbs if memory serves), and you can upload zip, rar, mp3, wav, flv (did all those myself just to check and see).

Just a thought I wanted to share!
