Welcome to the Shrine!

Anything from the FFXI OST or it's expansions are probably the biggest underrated examples of FF music as far as most FF fans are concerned. Granted although certain pieces from it like Distant Worlds and Ronfaure have been given numerous arrangements, ask the average FF fan about it and they'd probably look just look at you blankly. Which does it a great disservice, as there are some really interesting pieces on the FFXI OST (like Awakening, Gustaberg, Kazham and Metalworks to name a few of my personal favourites).

Barret's Theme from FFVII is another favourite of mine that sadly is very underrated (it only appears once in the game, early on in Sector 7 before heading to the Number 5 Reactor), as it's a fun, optimistic little piece that contrasts with Barret's overly serious nature.

Thanks!

I've listened to some of the FF XI OST now and I'm really impressed. Nobuo made the soundtrack for XI too am I right? If I remember correctly he made the soundtracks for all the games except XIII? It's sad that XIV and XI's soundtracks get ignored like that. They're probably great aswell.

And yeah, FFVII also has a lot of underrated themes like Barrett's Theme, Temple of the Ancients and Buried in Snow. The game is considered so overrated that it's almost underrated by a lot of hardcore FF fans.

I haven't played any of the FF MMOs though. I bought XI some time ago, but I never got it to work on my computer.

Uematsu only worked on a few tracks on the soundtrack for the main FFXI game (most notably the opening theme Memoria di la Stona, the Tudoresque forest theme Ronfaure, the ending theme song Distant Worlds and it's variations, and reoccurring FF tracks like the Prelude and the Victory Fanfare) - most of the soundtrack was composed by Naoshi Mizuta and Kumi Tanoika.

But you're right - Uematsu had a hand in pretty much every FF title OST in one form or another except for FFXIII, which was exclusively composed by Masashi Hamauzu. The reason for his departure is Uematsu left SE to become an independent composer, thus allowing him freedom as to what projects he chose to participate in.

In any event, he returned to compose FFXIV's initial OST, although many new tracks being added to the game in recent updates are apparently handled once again by Mizuta and Junya Nakano.

I disliked most of the examples you gave, except perhaps "awakening". It's not worth for me to download the full ost in lossless (3 gb).

Dancing Mad (All Tiers) from FF VI

That's underrated?

Yeah, sorry Aces, but I wouldn't really count Dancing Mad as underrated either - it's generally regarded as one of the greatest battle themes of all time, and for good reason too. ;)

Okay, sure, so maybe FFVII's One-Winged Angel might steal the lion's share of notoriety, but DM is still very popular amongst most FF fans, and it's fame is richly deserved too. :D

A couple years ago, Agent collected nominations in this category for the Final Fantasy Shrine blog.

Here's what I wrote then:

Final Fantasy III – Town of Water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Y3zSDawUk)
A gorgeous tune that got a wonderful upgrade for Final Fantasy III on the DS. I think Uematsu became a better composer while he was working on this soundtrack. The second section organically builds on the first and complicates the emotion of the song, turning what is initially a pretty melody into a sad one just as the strings come in. Uematsu later did the same thing with “Aerith’s Theme.”

Final Fantasy III – Deep Under the Water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SukvyXbwZxg)
The sound used for the melody has a slow and quiet decay that gives this song a graceful quality, and the circular bass-line underneath nicely bubbles up and creates a sensation of floating in the water. That wasn’t easy to do in 8-bit.

Final Fantasy IV – The Lunarians (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFCceq0q1pA)
I’ve always been a fan of this song’s atmosphere–using empty space and a simple, back-and-forth anti-Prelude to suggest the openness and mysteriousness of space. But the nerd in me also appreciates anything in 5/4 that’s done well.

Final Fantasy: Crisis Core – A Moment of Courtesy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N71m3Um-Lns)
This is a tiny gem that earns all of its one minute and ten seconds. It’s from a soundtrack that’s dominated by distorted guitars and heavy percussion. Here, though, a passage from “The Price of Freedom” is edited down to its most engaging ten seconds and traded back and forth between the members of a string quartet. The result is fantastic.

I'll have to think about any other songs I'd add these days.

Martial Law - Final Fantasy VIII (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjTw1Wcjzf8) by Nobuo Uematsu

I remember this song Fondly, because it had THE City/Metropolitan Sound. It didn't feel to evoke much of a Martial Law Enforcement, but it does evoke the kind of feel that big cities have, the oppressive and criminalistic smell on the streets. But compositionally speaking this song is fucking amazing. It reminds me a little to the Theme Songs of the Law & Order series and Seinfeld LOL. I quite love the Bass and the Interlude is something to hold in mind, because it's that small yet clever silence that carries you then into a great and suprising Urban Wind to your ears. In Contrast to Under Her Control (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKI8RFr0Ec8), that evokes a Chicago Pub Nights feel that the Movies show you. Martial Law, brings the day to day life of a Citizen that carries his life with Tall Builidings Observing him as he walks on the streets.
It did brought something new to the FF Series this song and I applaud to that.

Coming from me, people wouldn't be surprised if I bring these 2 on table.

Sometimes I think people excede in overcriticizing FFXII. Story(The Classic SW Rip-Off Argument), Characters(The Classic Non-Developed yada yada), Gameplay(kinda obvious to be a hater because it brought changes y' know), Music(Wash your ears and pay more attention if you think that the music is dull or boring, it's complex and does not borrow Rock or Pop elements to make it an easy listen, it's just that.), you name it. I would Metion the Whole FFXII soundtrack as kind of Underrated(Not as much as XI though, Naoshi Mizuta kinda blew it up by trying to carry the flag of the PE franchise back in 2000, so he isn't quite respected as he should be. In the end Square must be the real guilty though.). But considering it's a game set in another world, related to other games that were not Incorporated on the Main series, it's understandable the Mixed and Repulsive feel among the Haters and FF Veterans.

After ranting a little, let's go with the selected songs.

A Land of Memories - Final Fantasy XII (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb0W0M0Pc-M) by Hayato Matsuo

This song in particular NOT Composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, actually brought by Matsuo. Has the Peculiarity to continue with the trend of the style of the whole soundtrack and it incorporates the firm of a composer that made his name more doing Music for Anime rather than video games.
At start the song tries to convince you that it will be a happy tune, but just a few seconds and you can feel the contrast between the Light hearted intro against a Diminished melody that represents the sad and the grim, with this combination it results in a Nostalgic Ambrosia that carries you through a beautiful Intelude that tells you that it is indeed a song about Memories.
And the Misty Landscape of the Nebreus Deadlands fits.

The Salikawood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhUYPy7GVn4) - Final Fantasy XII by Hitoshi Sakimoto

Selecting a Sakimoto song from all those tracks was not an easy thing.
But considering that the general critic is that this soundtrack receives is the unfounded belief that it Lack of any Melodies. Here's a track that says it actually has plenty of melodies.
Salikawood starts with a Playful melody that's accompanied with some beautiful and spiritualistic choirs that shift into flutes and Harps.
This Melody continues to Evolve and it Carries you away to a beautiful and Pronunced hit of Orchestra that feels like flying over a fey and magical landscape, graceful for a Fantasy setting.
The works form the Brass is superb at putting feets to a song without soil and hard ground.

Kudos Arthur for bringing The Lunarians. I seize this oportunity to mention another great song.

Within the Giant - Final Fantasy IV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq3Xo84PxsA)

The Amazing thing about FFIV Soundtrack is the use of Drums as base to Carry the listener with a good rhythm throughout the whole soundtrack on a Medieval and Celtic Flavoured Tunes.

Ancient Castle - Final Fantasy II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UTFx62k_Qc)

This is an amazing piece - one of the best dungeon themes in any FF game to date. It truly encapsulates the feeling of exploring a fantasy castle full of mysteries, wonders and of course monsters.

Time For Rest - Final Fantasy XII (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUp46wc9d0Y)

Speaking of dungeon music, you need something more. Or at least I do. After slogging through legions of abominations, you want to feel like you've truly accomplished something. How best to do something like that? Well one of the ways is to reward you with a wonderfully beautiful theme like this one. I still remember finishing the Tomb of Raithwall and hearing this song. It soothed my soul and put me completely at ease.

I had fought off the undead and now I was here and all was well. I was at peace and happy.

Having just finished FFXIII I appreciate even more the necessity for a "cool down period."

Ipsen's Castle - Final Fantasy IX (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXGSH2AO4JE)

As beloved as The Place I'll Return To Someday and its many variations are, this one always gets the least mentions. I have always loved this song and the dungeon it belongs to. I can't really say why - it's just preference. i like the sound of it the most.

Over the Hill - IX

Battle 2 - Mystic Quest

Rufus' Welcoming Ceremony - VII

There's so many. Every time I listen to the OSTs, I find something new.

Maybe this game will get one of the best soundtracks in FF history.
To me, Yoko Shimomura is a better composer than Masashi Hamauzu: At Dusk, I Will Think of You..., My Heart's Descend, The Other Promise, Vector to the Heavens.

I think all ff3 ds is underrated, as there are some great pieces.
I think the prologue piece which was in ff8 is underrated.
FF9 has some classic pieces which i loved.Vamo alla flamenco, alexandria town piece is quite good, along with black mages village, and all the kuja pieces.I really like dark messenger a lot.
I think ff4 music is more underrated than ff9, as it gets less praise, and has really epic pieces, like dreadful fight, for fields, clad in black, tower of zot, lunar whale is really epic.Even themes like tororian beauty is a pleasure to listen to.
I think both barthandalus boss music piece, and orphan are underrated pieces that get overlooked in FFXIII.
I also liked the music in tactics for the psx too, and i think it has a lot of good pieces of music.

Long time no see/read.

Well, I think that the soundtrack of FFIV got a lot of attention: The Black Mages, Celtic Moon and the Dissidia series.
