So is it true that this is not limited to a certain number of copies?

Example 1,000 or 2,000 copies is fairly common with Intrada but apparently they have taken a new direction with this release and are just issuing by demand.

First time Intrada has done that with the Special Collection numbered series, this release is Vol.190, hard to believe they are that far along now.

The first Special Collection release was Switchback back in 2000 that was Vol.1 so 12 years later we have 190.

Time flies.

So is it true that this is not limited to a certain number of copies?

After Goldsmith's The Explorers sold out quickly during a Monday holiday when a lot of people weren't even at home or work to order, they decided to amend their limited releases. This is from Intrada's own website:

"9/6/11

ATTENTION! POLICY ALERT!!...

EXPLORERS is already just about sold out! We're not happy to see people get left out of such an exciting release. So we're arranging to quickly re-press an additional batch, enabling more people a chance to purchase the CD. So...

Effective immediately, Intrada plans on tweaking our limited edition model to have the quantity of CDs be more reflective of the demand. Golly!

The AFM historic rates policy remains in effect so these will, by definition, have a cap at 10,000 in any case. But our concern right now is avoiding sell-outs in 24 hours... or in this case, even less than that!!

We'll still produce limited editions, per se. If you folks love the title, we'll make enough to get around. BUT... there's always a but... the caveat will be that if you people have little interest in something we release (and we have plenty of limited editions that misfire) then we'll quickly drop that title from our active catalog and move on. As such, you may still need to make something of a quick decision on less obvious projects. Otherwise, you might check back in a few weeks to get a lowball item and it'll be gone. So we're going to keep some pressure on folks to prioritize. Our goal isn't to mothball the idea of limited editions. It's to avoid having people left out within the first day or two of release. When a limited edition sells really well, we'll make enough to meet your demand. When it slows down, we'll do the same. And if it just stalls, we'll cut it loose. YOU people get to be in charge!!

Bottom line. This is an experiment on our part to help get all of you folks who support this music a chance to get the releases you want. It's a window. It can't stay open for long, we still have licensing and AFM rules to play by. But it will allow us to make enough copies to meet your demands without overstocking... which would just sink our ship. And people who love to speculate will stay have a place in the strategy: we all will be guessing what the demand is on many titles anyway. If we're stuck with more copies than we'd like on something right off the bat... we'll delete it. And speculators may come out ahead. Personally, I'm saddened to see a title sell out instantly. Sure, I love the income. It's my livelihood. But I don't love seeing people lose out. So here's hoping this new limited edition policy at Intrada will help put you guys in the driver's seat on quantities.

This policy has no effect - obviously - on titles in which we are fortunate enough to control long-term licenses. Things like that will be in our catalog for the long haul: SILVERADO, TOMBSTONE, FIRST BLOOD, PATTON, THE WIND AND THE LION and so forth. We try to keep them around for generations, so to speak. Anyway, this is a dramatic change for the limited edition model we helped establish in the marketplace but perhaps we all may come out winners!

This goes without saying, I suppose, but this policy is an experiment. If it turns out that a lot of you folks buy titles like this JUST because they are limited, irregardless of the music, then we'll admit we shot ourselves in the foot. We'll put bandages on and follow your lead. Like I said, we're just trying right now to let YOU have some control. We understand that without you... there is no we."

Then:

"9/8/11

STILL MORE POLICY STUFF!!

With two days past and myself, Roger, Jeff, George and Steve... and even Joe (when we could tear him away from working on CD art) all spending every hour available either processing sales or babbling about our policy changes, we've made time to start implementing our plans. Given the feedback (mostly positive), here are our next steps in getting CDs to as many people as is practical while honoring the AFM and studio policies already in place. They're making this music possible, of course. (And, by the way, the feedback from those peerless musicians of the AFM is heartwarming.) Anyway, here goes round two.

We've already locked down our terminology, or branding if you will, that will appear on newly printed inlay cards for the second batch of EXPLORERS as well as on future releases. We're not huge fans of people buying and instantly re-selling our CDs at inflated prices even before we begin shipping the discs out but we understand the nature of business and say 'more power to them' if folks want to invest in their futures by chancing their cash on soundtracks. Investments help keep our free enterprise system chugging along. So we're literally branding any "second editions" and whatnot accordingly. I myself collect "first editions", so this lets me continue doing so. If your EXPLORERS has the original 3000 number on it, yep, it's a "first edition". Just like the world of books and whatever. But PLEASE don't simply label these things "limited editions" any more, and here's our reasoning why.

EVERYTHING'S becoming a limited edition. Those two words have become meaningless. The terminolgy was never intended to be a marketing tool but was designed by it's "authors" to facilitate the release of a small quantity of albums into the hands of dedicated fans while keeping the costs feasible. That was it! Somehow, it's just grown into a monster eating itself alive by labels everywhere branding everything "limited", though the actual market interest may be smaller than the printed number indicated! Even major labels issue stuff and drop it without fanfare when sales recede. The net result is now a non-stop barrage of really worthy soundtracks masquerading as "limited" editions, all zooming towards the same small audience struggling to prioritize in the first place, be it Goldsmith or Fidenco, Bernstein or Plumeri. It's insane! Now, we know we can't have our cake and eat it, too. But maybe we can do something to help keep the lunatics from running the asylum. So... look for branding that distinguishes first editions from second editions and whatever. And PLEASE keep in mind: we have enough smarts to usually be in the ball park so don't often expect first printings, then second printings, then third ones and so forth. Usually one additional batch will do.

Finally, PLEASE think about the following because I have for three or four years now. No matter how CDs are branded, and how much a customer buys with the understanding of getting something limited, labels everywhere are RE-ISSUING stuff left and right. If you bought the Varese Sarabande CD Club issue of FLESH + BLOOD for it's unique appeal, you later found Prometheus improving on it and issuing it again. Frustrated? Well, after that disappeared, we improved on it yet again. And THAT disappeared. No doubt some enterprising label is readying it a fourth time. That spectacular limited CASINO ROYALE is coming out again soon. Heck, few things aren't. And - unlike rare original posters or prints that usually can't be improved upon - with CDs, each subsequent "reissue of a reissue" gets better! Think COMMANDO this week. So maybe the lunatics will keep on running the asylum afterall. I don't know. But I'm glad to know that while what we're doing may be brazen, it's helping us get more music out to you people. So stay tuned."
