Thanks for all of the comments.

My most recent work.

Its a painting. Dimensions are 18x30", so a digicam was used to capture it. As such, the quality is low.

In the painting, I can't quite tell what that thingie is that looks like it's hanging out of her mouth (probably because of it being on a digicam and all.) Is she blowing a bubble like the girls in some of the previous pictures?

And the one you posted after that might be my favorite. It's awesome. Keep posting this stuff, even if lamers stop responding.

rezo
02-13-2004, 08:21 AM
It's hard to tell what that thing hanging out of her mouth is because I did a poor job of it, but it's supposed to be a paper bag. I took a new photo of the painting with a better camera, so the comment I made a few months ago about the quality doesn't really apply too much anymore.

TK
02-16-2004, 01:51 AM
Ah.

I've got an idea. When people ask what it is, you should smile in a very mysterious manner, and say, "Well, that's for you to figure out. I'll tell you one thing, though--it's the key to the meaning behind the painting."

Bam, you're all over museums!

Kuro

very cool, was the first one based on Battle Royale? it just reminds me so much of it

rezo
02-28-2004, 12:22 PM
No, it's not based on Battle Royale, though I get that a lot. High school kids get bloodied up in other series too, though. =\

Anyways, though it's not really obvious in the pic, if anything influenced me in making it, it was Ito Junji's awesome horror comics.

Marceline
03-03-2004, 01:24 AM
All of them are fantastic, albiet a bit disturbing. The last one is probably my favorite, and I like all the webcomic stuff you did too.

This is a bit strange. But the first one reminds me of my cousin. Years and years ago, some kid in her class tried to throw a chair at her teacher. He hit my cousin in the face instead. She needed plastic surgery, and I recall teasing her about stopping a chair with her face.

I know the kid in the picture is missing a limb. But it came to mind.

I'm sorry.

TK
03-04-2004, 11:02 PM
Probably because of the stool lying on the ground next to her?

rezo
03-21-2004, 12:17 PM
All of them are fantastic, albiet a bit disturbing.

I get this sort of comment often, not surprisingly, I guess. But it never really occured to me that I drew those sort of images until I started showing people online. Otherwise, I would just think "boy, this picture of the girl without a head on the swing looks neat!" =\

Here's a preview of a comic I'm going to attempt to work on on the side of the ribaldry youth.

I decided to shoot the comic in widescreen format. I told TK about it sometime ago, I think. I drew those all last week. The pages don't take much time to make, which is why I think I may actually have a chance at working on the comic seriously.

TK
03-21-2004, 08:47 PM
Awesome! I can't wait to start reading it. What do you mean by "widescreen?" They look like pretty standard-sized pages.

color pencils. Kinda hard to get it to look right. It was taken from a photo. I may try and use one of the big scanners this weekend.

TK
05-05-2004, 07:55 AM
Well, it does look pretty cool. That bright shininess... is that the colored pencils, or the scanner?

rezo
05-05-2004, 03:43 PM
If you mean the white surrounding the image, that was done in photoshop, when I was trying to clean it up. That's how the paper is, unfortunately, I couldn't have the whites in the main image section without screwing the color up, which is why the image is sort of dark.

TK
05-05-2004, 04:53 PM
No, I mean how the picture itself is kinda... I don't know. Shimmery? It actually looks really bright to me. o_O

rezo
05-05-2004, 05:24 PM
Oh. That's the EXCESSIVE USE OF YELLOW.

TK
05-05-2004, 09:21 PM
Well... actually, the shimmery parts are white. =O

rezo
05-05-2004, 09:41 PM
then...

If you mean the white surrounding the image, that was done in photoshop, when I was trying to clean it up.

=\

I'm all kinds of confused now. If you mean the kids shirt or something, I guess some white parts were entirely cancelled out from the small bits of levelling I did, and the contrast with the grey around them may give it a shimmer. =\

TK
05-05-2004, 10:18 PM
In the image itself, there's a lot of spots of white. That's what I mean. On the sand, on the kids, a little in the sky.

rezo
05-05-2004, 10:26 PM
Oh, yeah, I went to check the image on someone else's computer(my laptop sucks for images), and I think it's just because of the messed up color balancing that gave it that effect. yeah, but I can see what you're saying now.

TK
05-05-2004, 10:30 PM
Ah! Okay.

Well, in any case, it actually looks really cool with that effect.

thoose are really impressive rezo-i love the colour pencil picture.
your style is really refreshing and is very original.
the early pictures are the good kind of abstract, not like some of the crap pics some people draw, who think showing themselves being killed makes them incredibly expressive and shows their artistic inner strugle (when its actually just middle teen, hormonal bed-wetter angst). i mention no names

anyway u rock, can't wait for the comic

rezo
06-08-2004, 08:44 AM
Thanks. The comic has been put on hold though,as I'm currently working over time on my other comic, but I should be able to get into it seriously before the year ends. Hopefully... or I'll do something else and never finish it, who knows x_X

anyways, this was a quick oekaki I did recently. All drawn with my mouse straight away, and it was really easy to do so, because I have an OPTICAL mouse now... and apparently they are magic. Total time, 22 minutes... a few spent staring blankly at the screen deciding whether I wanted to do a BG or not:

TK
06-08-2004, 08:15 PM
I still can't believe you can do that with a mouse, even an optical one. X_x I guess I've never used one of those things, though.

What's an oekaki, though?

rezo

Marceline
07-03-2004, 09:44 PM
Wow. All your new stuff looks incredible.

I've seen stuff done with an optical mouse before, but none of it had the pixelated type effect like you've achieved- how did you do it?

rezo
07-03-2004, 10:01 PM
I just use programs that don't alias the drawing.

Most people draw in photoshop or something and use a tool that smoothes the strokes out, so it doesn't really matter if you draw it with an optical mouse or a pen on a tablet or whatever else. But for me, the pixellated look is pretty unique to computers, so whenever I draw on one, I just use simple art programs(oekaki, or my DOS program) and no special effects. Oekaki lets you draw with half-tones, so that's how I get the shading done with black dots. But I pretty much just stick with the draw tool and the fill tool. So it has a sorta game graphics look to it. Sorta. Sorta like a comic too, since I use black and white often.

While I'm here, here's a very old(4 years) fan comic I did for "THE KING OF FIGHTERS" featuring Ralf and Clark.,

I only found the pages recently. There was a page 3, featuring Clark performing the SUPER ARGENTINE BACK BREAKER on Ralf and then saying "HEY!" as he likes to do, but that page is LOST FOREVER.

oyster
07-04-2004, 02:20 AM
pitty 'bout the lost page.
I'm looking forward to translate it ...

rezo
07-04-2004, 02:40 AM
There's not much to the dialogue. It's,in order:

rough translation: "Let's do it, Clark!"

"Ok, Ralf!"

"GOOO! FIRE!"

"Now!"

"there?"

and "dakoom, pachi, bakiii" type sounds for the SFX.

I wanted to use their dialogue from the game before they fight each other, and since it was in japanese, I decided to just do the comic in japanese. It's unfinished actually... that's why some text balloons are empty.

Not the sort of thing I usually draw... since it's just a girl standing there. No background or anything There was a topic at the webcomic people board about drawing someone's character using someone else's style, so that's what this was done for:

TK
07-28-2004, 07:01 AM
Whose character is it?

rezo

I drew these straight away with a sharpie marker. The first one is how my pics usually end up when I do this(I use the thick marker as an opportunity to draw blood), I really like the second one and was a bit scared drawing the face since it's so hard to get thin lines, and the third one didn't come out how I wanted, so I took that as a sign to stop drawing.

Artistically you've been a big inspiration for me.
I'm just wondering, did you achieve the wondrous contrast in those pics by using a computer program or are you just that good?

I've been trying to use high contrast by drawing with Gel pens and I rell like the effects. Same thing goes for all of these, I really love high contrasting black 'n' whites.

Great job once again.

rezo
09-11-2004, 05:58 AM
Well, I drew them with a sharpie, so it's just black ink on white paper, so there's not a big difference in the contrast on the computer and the actual images. However, if you know how sharpies are, then you'd know you get more of a really dark gray from them. so I adjusted the levels to make the gray a solid black. If I wanted to get a solid black on paper, I'd probably have to use ink from a jar and lay it on thick(you can usually see the stroke marks when you ink with a brush...though they're subtle), or use acrylic black paint. It's more of a question of materials than skill. If your tool doesn't make a solid black, then your skill isn't going to make it happen.

Oh... no, I just scan. The only thing I use the computer for is to adjust the levels and clean up specs of dust from scanning or something.

Though converting your art to vectors should smooth out the lines. I've seen some examples and it does a decent job of it.I don't like that, since it's basically having a computer do what you should be able to do on your own, but it's one route to take. I'd work on becoming satisfied with my own technique before using something like that though, just so you don't become reliant.

Haha, sorry. You posted it the first time right when I was typing mine, so I never noticed it. Then I wasn't online for several days.

Print Clubs are those little booths where you sit in to take pictures in the mall. Pri-fun was an old console accessory that let you print off images from games.

But when I wrote it, it was as a variant of "print club". I decided to use that title instead of print club because that sounded too plain... plus she's holding the pictures in her hands so you can make the connection!

I've been painting pretty much non stop for the last week and a half. This is
what I've done so far(All are acrylic on canvas. I have a half finished painting on my desk and another canvas waiting a few feet away from it for when I finish):

(16x20)

18x24)

The first and fourth are for the comic I'll probably be doing when I finish my current one. I had some problems on the first two paintings but have been getting re-acclimated to painting fairly well. I don't know how to work the image editing software, so I couldn't retain the color of them, but they're not too different beyond some loss in the vibrancy of the colors. =|

The first one isn't finished. I need to add some more text to it, but I suck at graphic art, so I'm not sure of how I'm going to add it yet. I had the photo taken so that I could tool around with a few ideas for how to place the copy on the computer. The second painting... the figure is so tiny in it on the computer screen, and it's dark in spots =\, and I'd really like the third if not for a few stupid mistakes =\ I think I like the first batch of paintings more overall, but I had more control with the paint this time around. So hopefully I can get some really good stuff done in November.

Did this some time ago in watercolors. It was for a project, and I did it the night before it was due while a bit feverish. It's kind of unfinished because some parts were wet(hair) when I decided to get to sleep.

But it's supposed to be Audrey Hepburn.

Also, I love Audrey Hepburn.

Once again, the painting.I had to stop for a few weeks, so that's why I only have 3 done in a month =\

(18x24)

(30x20)

(24x30)

The first one isn't finished. I need to add some more text to it, but I suck at graphic art, so I'm not sure of how I'm going to add it yet. I had the photo taken so that I could tool around with a few ideas for how to place the copy on the computer. The second painting... the figure is so tiny in it on the computer screen, and it's dark in spots =\, and I'd really like the third if not for a few stupid mistakes =\ I think I like the first batch of paintings more overall, but I had more control with the paint this time around. So hopefully I can get some really good stuff done in November.

What.

Calmia: The drawings are simple(unfinished pic of girl, cat is a sketch with basic shading) so it's hard to tell what you're actually capable of. Is the angel sanctuary pic a reproduction of an already existing image? The most basic advice I have besides the basic stuff(anatomy, etc) is to spend more time on each drawing. No one can do detail quickly. No matter how good you are, it's still a fact that if you want to do a realistic building, you're going to have to draw the hundred windows, photos, curtains, etc that can be seen through the windows, the cracks in the walls between them, etc. It's just a matter of volume that makes those kinds of pictures take a decent amount of time no matter what. Better artists will be able to do them faster, of course but it still takes a while.

Taking the extra time to make a drawing perfect helps even the ground between you and the people better than you, and it also helps you improve quicker. Technique is related to this. Don't shade with a pencil in one pass. Start very lightly and slowly build the picture up. This especially goes for color pencils, because they won't blend if you don't color lightly, and it looks like you colored lazily with crayons. Also, don't smear the pencil for shading. Shade it in directly; If you don't have them, get a set of pencils of different values, and then you'll have an easier time getting the right value when you're shading. There are some times where smearing is ok, but it's best to avoid it until you're confident that you don't need to bother with it at all, and then find ways to integrate it back into your work. Some people don't paint with black paint at all, because it's harmful to colors when it mixes. So they avoid it, but when they get really good, they understand where and how it can be used, and it goes back into the palette.

Besides that stuff, seriously study anatomy/perspective/color theory etc. I never did when I was younger(except for perspective), and seriously suffered for it, especially with anatomy(perspective is mathematical so doing it right is mostly just a matter of being patient enough). is one of my better drawings from when I was around your age.I scanned them a long time ago and just the few scans I made are the only pics I have left from then. I used to always try and fill in the background with as much detail as possible, even if I didn't know exactly what I was doing. But I'd always draw the people from far away and without mouths and I seriously couldn't draw them at all. Even now I have a lot of trouble with faces and the like. That's really a problem, so it's important to clear up the basic technical skills before anything else so that your skills develop evenly and you don't get a "the coloring is good, but look at the crappy linework", "nice scenery, horrible characters" etc etc comments. Poor scenery and characters means you're a beginner. Skill in one and not another means you missed a step along the path of developing your abilities.

THAT'S ALL.

calmia
01-19-2005, 11:52 AM
Is the angel sanctuary pic a reproduction of an already existing image?

yeah, i changed quite a few things but i was mostly just copying it since i love the original.

thanks alot for the comments. i realise that i need to spend way more time on my pics. the girl was done with watercolour pecils in around 40 minutes, and the cat was done with a photo reference in about 15 minutes with a regular HB. both were done for cards that i gave to friends(the girl was a character in a story) so i rushed to finish them, not that i'm excusing the fact that they suck alittle.
i really appreciate the advice. i'm gonna concentrate more on getting good line-art and then probably start getting used to using colour pencils properly. i get what you mean about it looking like crayon.
thanks again

Work in progress:

1. First, I do a very very detailed pencil drawing to color.

http://www.ribaldyouth.com/pics/run2.gif

2. Then I pick a color and render the entire pic in it. It's night, so I used blue. But I always mix grey and yellow into whichever color I choose, so it's somewhat greenish.

3. ? Who knows man... who knows...

this is only half of the drawing. scanner in room is tiny.

Time spent so far: hour ... hour and a half maybe. Not sure. Spent half of the time that I was painting watching "Mission: Impossible" which is... it's a movie that I shouldn't have bothered watching at all is what it is!

It's colored ink. Has an effect similar to watercolor, but it isn't waterbased, so once you put colors down you can't pull them back up.

uhh no...rezo. commics are for cool ppl....and shit like u draw is for nerds like u....dipshit. why do u have that additut problem anyway?????

Did you read the part of my post where I said the little girl is a character design for a comic?

Now, you'll have to ask yourself... why would someone that has a comic online (http://www.ribaldyouth.com) and draws other pics as concept art for a comic in the future say that comics are for losers? And why would the fact that I work on comics myself be mentioned in that very same post slamming comics? Once you figure that out, you'll be able to figure out where my attitude comes from. If you can't figure it out, I'll be sad. =\

The colors are really muted in the scan(like I said, I didn't adjust it). But if you think this is one of the worst, be glad that you haven't seen what I don't put in this topic. I did this tree painting along with 3 others in a span of 3 days. It wasn't meant to be a well designed illustration(that's why the tree is just a stump with leaves stacked on top),but a technical study in working from dark to light. The entire canvas was painted dark blue, and then I started adding lighter spots on top to see how it worked.

Bastids.

haha, it's true though. I really need to work on people. Though it depends a lot on what I'm working on. Like my recent thing is to not... pencil... images before I paint them or draw with ink just because it's more fun and quicker.

If something calls for it, I'll usually bump up the detail ()(from last year)

more than what's in the images I've posted in this thread. And most of the problems I had when I was drawing that short comic were sorted out since then.

And there's nothing to 'get' from the people turning into trees other than that it looks kinda neat, I think!

Also thanks to everyone for the comments.

Oh, don't be so modest, rezo. The people turning into trees pictures are clearly in-depth, symbolic critiques on society which would take years of analysis to fully understand.

Of course that is all true, and you know that and I know that. But I didn't want to hurt ktulu's feelings. He has it hard enough being of such little brain.

I've been doing stuff like this instead of making comics about one-eyed girls =\

I don't have the ability to read words and tell if the comments have been made in jest, thus I will assume that I truly am "of little brain."

Thanks. A lot of the pictures in the beginning of the topic are pretty embarrassing now.

Also embarrassing: pictures from around the end of the topic. and the middle.

ANYWAYS NEW STUFF. I started working on the one eye girl comic, random page clippings(none of thedrawings are finished... but they're all almost finished):

As usual I'm stunned as to why you're posting these on the internet and not being paid to have these sold or whatnot. Also is the comic really over? Cause people at your site are getting nervous about it ending or what...

TK

While Ribald Youth's ending leaves me wanting more, I don't think it could appropriately end any other way.

i'm guessing this comic takes a hell of a lot longer to draw than Ribald Youth to draw. The characters look cool though.

Not too much longer. I'm doing about 2-4 hours per page so far. RY was about 40 minutes to 1.5 hours. I save time on this one because the pencils are simpler and there are less panels per page(4 tiny panels take longer to fill up than 1 big one).

But yeah, before I started drawing it I thought it was going to take much longer than it actually is, like, 8 or 10 hours per page maybe, so I'm pretty happy that it isn't.

I'm going to assume you meant to say "super" where "stupid" is in this post..?

rezo

If you had ever watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, then you would know that "stupid" is the new "cool".

...or was... circa early 1990s.

I don't remember that stupid part in the fresh prince, anyway it was a heck of a show, Jazz was my favourite

Only people that experienced the Fresh Prince when it first came can truly appreciate it and remember all of its great moments. Unfortunately, at that time you were too busy not being alive to take notice =\

poor Will Smith
having done FROB-A so early in his career there is no way but down
it gave us perhaps the finest moment in televisions recent history.

Will had carved the word 'fresh' into a table at his private school duing an exam and is being stood trial by the faculty.

a preppy student defends him saying-"how can we judge what hes done as wrong? where he comes from 'bad' means good"
