I'm interested in hearing what you people call your favourite manga or anime at the moment. I want to know who in here sticks with the basics and classics, and who departs on the adventurous sub-genres.

In Germany the first issue of a new magazine just started, featuring - among others - the absolutely awesome "Yakitate Japan", the first baking manga I read, which I highly recommend. Because... in the same way that Hikaru no Go made me want to play Go, this one made me want to eat bread.

Anything else new in your own little mangaverse?

I've always loved the way Japanese manga seem to be MUCH more creative about their subjects than a lot of American comics are... XD

My current obssession is Inuyasha. It's the only thing I read out of Shonen Sunday, even though I get the entire lineup of SS comics at a time. I sometimes read Detective Conan, but right now Inuyasha is definitely it.

I also read Crayon Shinchan and the occasional obscure manga that no one has probably heard of... :)

At the moment, I'm (mostly) reading : 'MR' (a kid gets sent to a weird fantasy world, by the guy who did Flame of Recca), 'Midori no Hibi' (a boy gets a girl for his left/right hand (forget which), 'Hajime no Ippo' (boxing manga. it's really good, though), I'm actually reading 'Yakitate!! Japan', too. Yay for bread-making. They're all scanslations though. Which must make me a bad person. o_O But I'd buy them if I could. The only other manga I'm reading is Love Hina. Which is cool. ;) So, yeah, my tastes are a little... weird. heheh.

At the moment its nothing...
really, I should go to the comic-chop to investigate the new manga... but I can tell ya, Chrno Crusade will be my new favourate manga (now that Legend of Mana is over! )

But whatsoever, I am not really fixed on one series right now (cause I didnt buy any new!! -_-). But Im sure I will find one again that takes my breath away. (Chrno Crusade!!!!!)

Anna, show me the bread-manga!
And if ya wanna make bread, ya can make a white bread for me, Andreas wont buy any!! :( (Am I gonna die here??! Not good!)

MR has been announced here, so I'll have a look at it then. ^.^

@Maliris
Chrno Crusade is a likely candidate to "take your breath away"! Hurry up and buy it, it's worth the 10...
Fantastic artwork, cool, likeable characters and an interesting and captivating story. Captivating!
The upcoming anime adaption should boost this manga's popularity... And by the way, it will find its way to the USA! And with the upcoming anime adaption... I predict a hit!

Well someone who shall remain nameless (cough Anna cough) told me to download Naruto episodes.

So far I have 24 of them, and I've watched 12. Suffice to say, I'm a little hooked. I have more downloading as I speak, sucking up the bandwidth and annoying my house mates no end.

Still, I'm beginning to get into the character's heads even if one of the boys is blatantly a girl.

... Man, I posted in the anime / manga forum.

I'm currently heavily into Ah! Megami-Sama - otherwise known in the US as Oh, My Goddess!, and Love Hina, in both anime and manga forms.

However, I'm starting to also get hooked on Cowboy Bebop (and no I'm not bothering watching the watered-down censored version on Cartoon Network either), although I haven't got the manga yet, I'm getting there!

Currently Cowboy Beebop. the Cartoon Network run got me interested so I went out and got one of the DVD's. Don't know if there any different yet because I never saw the fist 6-7 eps on Network. Eventually I plan to learn Japanese but for now I'm stuck with watered down english trans an sub-titles. Got no money so I can't do much, dial up internet(curse you cheap parents), and I haven't had a chance to look int manga yet. In a not so Anime note I've been watching Clone Wars on Cartoon Network, It's done by the same guy who does Samurai Jack, there's just something I like about his art style. Anyway, PM me if you have any suggestions as to where I should go from here.

I kept thinking that it was a game before i saw the anime X_x
Its about this guy Sagara Sousuke (sounds familiar anyone?) who has to protect a high school girl (Chidori Kaname) as she is one of the "Whispered" so she holds valuable dark information in her sub-conscious mind. Sousuke falls in love with her (why does it always have to be that way?) and learns the Japanese teenager customs as the only thing he knows in the beginning is guerrila war tactics.

I'm not reading any manga at the moment but I still got some chobits left to read.

I'm really looking for to Rurouni Kenshin boxset coming out this nov. I've seen 1 or 2 episodes and enjoyed it very much.

Other than that, i've not been recommended any good anime lately. Someone with good taste toss me a PM with good anime suggestions. I would be grateful. :)

Well someone who shall remain nameless (cough Anna cough) told me to download Naruto episodes.

omg. lol. i got a friend of mine who thinks i'm behind the tide with anime cause my most favorites are still sailor moon and stuff. lol so he started bugging me about naruto. and i'm like "blah blah, i bet its boring! i'd watch classic robotech anyday!"

so i got tired of it and d/l the first 3 episodes a few days ago and i'm like "hm..not bad..." lol one of the reasons i didnt want to see it, though, was cause i don't like to d/l anime series that are very long. such as naruto. that's why i dont even d/l sailor moon. as if i'd get 200 episodes on my h/d. i only get small series like trigun and hellsing. (which i do have btw lol)

but i gave it a chance anyway and though i can see how this is a pretty cool anime, i'm very blown away by its fanbase. its really getting huge. and i feel rather odd not seeing myself getting into it either. am i really losing my touch? or is everyone else just overstating naruto's "awesomeness". who the fuck knows. all i know is, that i fucking love read or die.

that is the anime i'm into right now at this very moment. Read or Die TV. i d/led the first 3 (miniseries/trailer/pilot) episodes like 6 months ago. and i really liked it. and now i just recently found out that there's a fucking tv series. i'm like WTF. lol. so i started d/ling them all like crazy. the annoying part is they are making them huge high quality videos that average 150+ mb each video. compared to what videos used to be just a year ago. (between 70 and 80 mb) its a big jump. so i'm hoping taht 16 episodes is all it has cause that's as far as i've seen the list go in some websites.

i've only d/led the first 8 episodes right now. me and my sister only saw the first one. (i got my sister into anime and we both love read or die). i havent seen the rest, my sis told me not to watch them wihtout her. lol

i really like it. so, for me read or die TV is definately what i'm into right now. and i really really loveit.

Tokiko
12-28-2003, 05:35 PM
It has over 60 episodes and is still running. So far it only covers, oh, half of the manga I believe, and the manga is still running in Weekly Jump. So there really is no end to it right now, sorry. :)

And yes, it's weird that suddenly everyone knows and loves Naruto. It's a good show and deserves the fame of course... but I remember the times when there was NO anime and I desperately tried to find people who knew the manga, and none knew of it, and none cared. And suddenly kaboom. It's weird.

whats buggin me is that its naruto. and that for some reason i dont see whats so special about it. sure i like it. and i woudln't mind seeing the entire series. but why are poeple crazy over it. i don't get it. its all about read or die for me. that show is awesome! >.< lol

i guess i'll just have to d/l some more to see what the hype is all aobut. lol i've only seen the first 3 anyway. :p

but i saw the first 3 read or die and love it. why not naruto? first 3 of trigun, and i loved it. first 3 of hellins.g and i love it. why not naruto? why do i have to see episode 12 to see the junk finnally pic up? c'mon man! lol

Some series are like this, other are like that. Some start out furiously, other build up slowly... I guess Naruto is the latter because it's mostly all about its characters and their development. It took me a while to grow attached to them. (Well, actually the first chapter already blew me off my feet, but I only truly started to love it once I got to know the characters better.)

I don't know Read or Die at all so I cannot compare. Sometimes there is a spark, sometimes there isn't. The first three episodes of Hellsing? I watched the first two or so and there was a very strong anti-spark. I didn't like it one bit. ^^ The atmosphere... hmm... not mine. I don't have tome for longer answers because my internet might die any second. I'll come back later.

Tokiko
01-18-2004, 02:43 PM
For Kenshin, I recmmend you the manga, and forget what happened in Reflections, it's just not what Watsuki (the author) intended for his story. The later issues of the manga do a way better job in introducing Enishi and his revenge. It's not just crammed into a few minutes time, but given full eleven volumes. I suggest you read them. :) And reading them makes Reflections... unnecessary.

Nope, and I wouldn't tell you even if I knew. I do not support scanlations of licensed series. Fans nowadays are too spoiled.
The "Why wait to pay money when I can get it free now?" attitude has infected far too many manga readers... =o
Just wait for the official translation, and buy it. (If you speak a foreign language - any! - you also have the option to import them from a different country... I think America was really the last to get Kenshin. Which is... just silly.

Depends. Translation isn't an exact science. I can read Japanese fine, and I've found that the official English releases are even more literally inaccurate than fan-done comics.

Of course, I think that the inaccuracies are for a reason. They dont' want a literal translation; if it was literal, sometimes it just wouldn't be as appealing to a Western audience or it would make no sense.

The Japanese Inuyasha versus the English Inuyasha release irks me quite a bit. The graphic novels are well-done in the sense that the storyline wasn't really screwed with, but I'm learning that there are places where it IS pretty inaccurate.

So do I support scanlations and stuff? I don't have a problem with it in all honesty; it's like fansubbing. It's a grey area that on one hand helps people to read and understand a series they might not get otherwise. On the other hand, it DOES support the "if it's for free, I don't have to buy it anymore." attitude. But whenever possible, I DO reccommend people get the licensed manga/anime.

I recently just got into the series Hana --Kimi by Hisaya Nakajo. AND I'm still waiting for my slow bookstore to recieve volume 10 of Fushigi Yugi.(sigh) there's only 13 volumes of Fushigi Yugi. Why is it taking so long for them(Viz) to release it?!

I'm currently DEEPLY into Pet Shop of Horrors. The manga is so interesting and its a good read. And the anime, eventhough it was 4 episodes long, was great too.

Another one i'm into is Angel Sanctuary.. BIG Angel Sanctuary fan. I have the DVD, but i'm excited that the manga is now in English and plan on reading all of that. :)

Currently, I am into:

Peach Girl/Change of Heart - I love what happens to these characters and how they handle their situation. Kiley > Toji and Sae > Momo

Battle Royale - I already read the novel, and it seems to be way better than the manga. Nevertheless, it's interesting eye-candy.

Really into the Battle Royale manga and Scryed. Both classics. The art in Battle Royale is superb.

If anybody has tech tv at home, I suggest checking out anime unleashed which has introduced me to most of the series that I know about. Right now, I am watching Geneshaft, which is good, but I am uncontrollably obsessed with .Hack//. The show has such an eerie atmosphere that for some reason, I can't get enough of. Oh, and Boogiepop Phantom is pretty good to.

At the moment, I'm heavily ossessed with Last Exile, and, to a lesser extent, Witch Hunter Robin and King of Bandit Jing as far as anime goes.

Even if Last Exile is heavily influenced by RPGs like FF and Xenogears, it still rocks so incredibley hard. The airship battles in particular are especially intense, and I love the mechanical designs... :D

As for manga, I haven't really read anything different since my last post. I'm still into Oh, My Goddess and Love Hina (be getting OMG volume 18 next week), although I've also started reading a new manga called Aria which is actually quite interesting...

I should be getting the most recent Initial D imports any day now. After that, I'll probably be getting the original Tekkaman Blade series (You might have seen it in its crappy Americanized form as Teknoman) or Space Pirate Captain Harlock (If I can find it).

I just started reading Azumanga Daioh, and it's all kinds of wonderful. The best manga I've read since Chobits, I think.

I wish I could read more Gunslinger Girl, but I haven't been able to find anything beyond the first volume.

I'm going to see if I can track down a fansub of the Gunslinger Girl anime and use that to quench my thirst for cute litte assasins.

Nick? No one ever calls him Nick. Everyone calls him Wolfwood. I'm not gonna tell you if he or anyone else dies.

The animals don't belong to Vash. The cat is a running gag.

Vash's hair is blond. You probably just saw the back of his head shadowed.

It's a very good show. Not one of the best, but easily worth seeing.

Try making a thread about Trigun if you want to ask lots of questions about it. :)

You have Cartoon Network in the UK, don't you? Trigun is on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim every Saturday. If you can't find a way to buy or rent it, that's your best bet.
