I'm currently trying to rip the music files from Felony 11-79 (Runabout as it was known in America)

It's a PSX game, I've checked some tutorials and such on here and on the net, but most just point to programs that are no longer available, so i was wondering if anybody that knows how to do it could help me a little

Most of the soundtracks i've ripped before were from pc games etc where it was a lot easier

Any help would be appreciated aswell as links to current programs for ripping old ps1 and 2 game discs

Thanks

vgmstream should play them even without conversion. As for specialized tools PSound should be sufficient as it was created especially for PSX.

cheers, i've tried vgmstream already and it just takes ages doing anything and then comes up with an error, shall give PSound a whirl though

update - tried ripping .XA files with PSound and it says unrecognised format, which seems odd if it was written specially for PSX games

vgmtoolbox (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vgmtoolbox/) can do it, but some games are harder to rip than others if you don't have programming skills. This one doesn't work for me, I'll tell you now. But I'll tell you how you might begin to get this to work and it does work for some games without any extra step. Open vgmtoolbox and go to Misc. Tools → Extraction Tools → Generic → ISO Extractor and then drag and drop the game's ISO into the vgmtoolbox window. It will now allow you to browse the disc's file system and in it there is are folders called STR and XA. Both contain music files, but this is the point where I don't know what else to do. If you extract them, there's something wrong and they just make a horrible noise when played with vgmstream or just outright crash foobar. You could ask for help from the people who made vgmtoolbox and vgmstream here (http://hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php).

OMG dude, it worked, and i fiddled some more and i can even help you along now aswell, once you extract the files using your method, in vgmtoolbox, go to the extraction tools menu again, then to Streams, then CD-XA Extractor, and drag&drop the XA files into it, and it will convert them to be compatible in foobar, then you can just convert them to wav etc from there

That's teamwork right there

Does vgmtoolbox work on Windows 7 or not?

yes because i'm running windows 7

yes because i'm running windows 7

Great! Awesome! Super!

Now, I am not a "native" PC user; after I run the program and put the disc in, what do I do?

how do you mean "not native" you mean you are running windows on a mac or something?

There is a "family" computer running W7, but I do not use it normally. My personal one is an Apple laptop.

i see, well if you follow the steps above on the windows 7 family computer, then you should be able to rip all the tracks you want

vgmtoolbox wins again! Everybody using other tools for extracting music needs to check to see if it can do it first. You can see in the menu there the wide range of things it can do and it makes lots of software that people used before obsolete.

I should have thought of doing what you did. Thanks for the tip. Good job.

Oh, and to KlarkKentIII, this game had the XA and STR files in a really easy to find place. Not all do and the Spyro ones don't. I'm sure the Spyros can be ripped with vgmtoolbox, I just don't know how.

I am doing everything according to the above instructions, and all I get are error messages "incorrect function".

I am pretty sure the file I need to scan is SPEECH.STR and I am getting the "incorrect function" bullshit.

ACTUALLY, it does work on Mac and Linux. Just open the Java version included in the folder (.jar , one of those)

I see a lot of folders but I don't see any folders containing a .jar file. I don't see any program to drag to my applications folder either. All I see are a bunch of folders that don't have much in them.

I tried to extract the VGMToolbox.exe icon (I'm guessing that's what I'm supposed to do) but it doesn't have anything in it.

I didn't have any problems with Game Extractor. Although I don't know how to use it.

Yeah none of that stuff in the picture is in the file from the link posted above. Maybe the file is missing a few things. Maybe I'm blind. idk...

I have a feeling that even if I could get the program to open I would still have a lot of trouble extracting the files. I tried Game Extractor and just dragging the files over to it but there's obviously more to it.

It gave me an error message and didn't work. Oh well. I got a lot closer with that link than the last one though! Thanks for trying to help!

It might be because it's a PS1 disc from 1999. Too old to rip?
