I'd have to say that BoF and FF are my fav. game series'. BoF's simple, but fun gameplay makes you addicted, that and trying to find everything. The fishing and town building is fun. There's no fishing in BoF:Dragon Quarter though.
But that story if it was more indepth could be better than FF7. Ryu's kill now ask questions later is a big change, post-apocolypse time setting in an underground world. The world was destroyed ironicly for those who know what I'm talking about. the dragons. You get to see Ryu talk, and finally Nina SHUTS UP FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!!!!
Another change is the battle, it's like FFT and Parasite Eve1 mixed. The replay value is just way up there. You have to die and start over (With same stuff you died with) to get new story cut-scenes. Hell, some you have to beat the game to get. The D-Counter is a dragon clock, if it gets to 100% you snap, turn into a huge dragon and kill the world. I don't wanna spoil how to work with the fairy colony though.
This is one of my favotite games of all time. You need patience to play it, I should know, but it is so damn fun.

I just started DQ a couple days ago. It reminds me so much of Vagrant Story (kudos to anyone else who's played this) I think that nothing this game can do could stop me from loving it. I rarely come across a challenge in RPGs today, and in this game that's exactly what you get from the start.

I'm only 8 hours in, just got the Dcounter and haven't restarted yet. I suppose I will soon, but I just wanted to know how far I could get without restarting~

Just thinking this is probably more of an RPG, so I'm gonna move it over there...

Anyone have any ideas when this is going to be out in Europe / The UK? I loved Breath of Fire III / IV, and would love to play this installment as well.

How mysterious. I swear it was already in the RPG forum..

Unfortunately I haven't heard of a European release date...unless it's already out over there, I have my doubts.. x.x;

All I can say is getting the Legend Blade is a fucking bitch. Most powerful blade in the game, and it costs 90,000 Zenny.

I finished the game once, and got a D-Ratio of 1/1024, which I heard is good for a first time completion :)

SPOILER

If I ever have the time, I'll do it again. I doubt I'll ever want to up my D-Ratio to 1/4 but if I could reach 1/64, I'd like to see if the script changes, because then Bosch couldn't call Ryu a Low-D...Anyway.

SPOILER END

Bosch was a spoiled rich kid, he couldn't survive in living Ryu's postion. Which is why he kicked Bosch's ass. Some of the doors that need D-Ratio require Dragon Quarter. Dragon Quarter is 1/4.

Evad D'Aragon

Actually, no. To be able to explore 100% of the game's areas ( that includes opening all D-Ratio doors ), you only need 1/215 or so.

I finished it last night. 1/512. =)
Take THAT, former edible sword!

[SPOILERISM]

Got a question about the Center:

Is there any way to travel back down to lower levels of the Center after you've gone up? I kept to the left-hand side all the time, fought Jesuit, but never found Hortencia.

Bleh :p Since there is only a couple of points of difference to go from 1/1024 to 1/512, I really am taking no offence DL ;) You probably went to goof around in Kokon Horray or something like that, which I didn't. lol Most people , on their first try, hardly make it at 1/2048 (the average actually is 1/4098 0_o) or so I heard.

[Answer to spoilerism]

And, no, if you fought Jezuit you can't fight Hortensia, in fact, when you fought Cupid you couldn't fight Hortensia. The only way to get the skills and treasure on the right side of the Centre is through a second replay. You can only fight 2 out of 4 regents in the Center. But the one right after Hortensia, if you keep going right, actually consists of THREE regents at once, so while they're not as annoying as Jezuit (except of course if you blasted him to oblivion with 3x D-Charge + Twister lol Gotta simply love that Dragon transformation, I mean, I obliterated the Dragonized Bosch in one turn...Just lovely :)), they can take quite a while to beat...:( You actually did exactly like me, DL, you went left all the way lol But we should have gone right then left to fight Hortensia then Jezuit, as we would have seen a little more about their little "bet".

DL
06-23-2003, 10:58 PM
Bah, 510 > 1024 ;) , even if it's just a minor difference in points!
But yeah, I spent a little time in Kokon Horay or whatever.

And I can see how Jezuit could have been annoying because of his Shadow walk, but I was able to beat it using Nina's lv2 clone skill (can't remember its actual name), placing one in front of each character. Jezuit would ram right into the clone, which would explode on him and immediately cancel Shadow walk. So I was able to keep my D-counter in the 20's, and not use up the very few healing items I had. whoopee!

I guess next time I'll keep to the right and see what I missed.

Hortensia has a nice behind.

1/4098? Ha, silly Low-D's.

Evad D'Aragon
06-23-2003, 11:14 PM
Actually, I never even wanted to test how hard the regents were. When I restarted in the Centre ( I went that far without restarting but had to give up because my D-Counter was at 92% or so ). I didn't transform until Regent Deamoned. After that, I went lazy and blasted them all to hell lol The Centre took 30 mins to complete.. LMAO !

You guys are obviously good. I'll be lucky if I get 1/4098. I'm on my 7th retry cuz I'm trying to get the Legend Blade. That, and I suck at the game. But I still love it.

The Legend Blade ? Geez, that must take quite a number of retries ( I'd say 3-4 ), but don't forget to put that money you're saving in your bank at the colony. Otherwise, you're screwed.

But since it is your 7th try you actually might get higher than us for...depends on what things you did, it all sums up see ? Like, if on your first try you saw 56 % of the map and on your second you saw, say 52 %, but there is a 4% that wasn't included in your first try, it actually means you've seen 60% of the map.

Only a few things can make a difference for your D-Ratio.

Oh, and DL can be considered my "Capcom rival" lol It all started a few years ago with BoF IV as we were trying to find more and more ways to combo attacks. I remember he beat me for the highest number of hits but I won for the highest damage ( correct me if I'm wrong DL lol ) And btw DL, did you know I've learned a way to rack over 70 hits in a single combo ? ;) I think that's near over 25 hits more than your best back then. But I never found a way to beat my best in terms of damage, which was around 44 000 or so...

Oh, and let's not forget that we wanted to see which one would kick the other's ass using Ryu in Street Fighter Alpha III of course...Ain't there somebody who can stop this fighting machine ? ;)

Well I've officially pulled out of the BoF5 race. I couldn't help it and lost interest in my 2nd retry (heh, not too long after I got 1/512 o.o).

I found the Legend Blade pretty useless. I hated the fact that Great Smash is one of those hit-or-miss deals. So I used the Dragon Blade instead, or whatever that one is called that you get from the genic compiler. (yes, I still use Deathbringer and/or Roundsaber)

Heh, I could always experiment with BoFIV now, as I still have my best save file on there. If I can un-lazy myself I'll give it a try, but my highest combo is definitely over 70 hits.

As for Alpha 3, you'd probably beat me in a Ryu vs Ryu today, seeing as I hate shotos now. I'd rather play Dan or Guy before Ryu nowadays. My best are Chun-Li, Blanka and Sakura. But I'm more into CvS 2 now, and play more SNK characters than Capcom in it. =P

Hum...on the PS2 ? I've had that one since a year and a half already. I used to take Ryu, Ken and Terry when I felt like taking a trio. Otherwise I stick with Ryu on Ratio 4. Sometimes I'd go with Kyo or Rock too in my teams. I'm interested in the upcoming SNK Vs Capcom Chaos from SNK Playmore.

Yeah, I also dropped out of BoF V mainly because I got myself a GameCube :) I've been "busy" with Skies of Arcadia. Right now I'm on the Wind Waker then it's StarFox Adventures and Ocarina of Time...so no BoF V for a while...

My highest combo on BOF:IV was 87 hits with 100,000 points of damage.

From what you guys have said (I skipped quite a few posts due to spoilers), this game sounds very interesting..I got this game for my birthday but haven't tried it yet. It's not that I don't tbhink it won't be good, I've just been too busy with the other games I got...beating Clock Tower 3, starting Xenosaga, GTA Vice City, Onimusha, GGX2, etc..not to mention I've never played a BoF game before..so that's why I thought I'd wait 'til I finish Xenosaga or something.

So...FFT, PE1 and Vagrant Story...wow...all of those games were damn good (except sometimes Vagrant Story annoyed me...one battle took me 3 fucking hours!! On one god damn boss!), so from what you guys've said, I'm looking forward to playing this game.

I can only keep up with so many games though....x__x

Koenma, prepare for a difficult game. It's nothing like the last 4 BoF's. Trust me on this one.

Greetings.

What kind of BoF fan am I, when I have all four of the presvious games and not this one yet? I must be going nuts!

Anywayz, from the previous posts here, I've come to one conclusion : Game must be good. I've finished the first four games (Tracking down a working copy of the original, THAT was a fun job, not!), and when I heard that BoF V was being made, I thought YES! About bloody time. But then, I heard that BoF V was to do a Suikoden 3 and never be released here in AUS. That sux.

Still, I'm gonna get me a cop of both games, yes?

Well, it's finally out in the PAL regions... So I need someone to persuade me to part with my cash for it. Is it as good as BOF3 and 4? Is it similar to those games?

DL
12-15-2003, 01:02 AM
Nothing like the previous BoFs, which ish both good and bad.

BOF:DQ is more like a "dungeon crawler" than anything else, so if you're easily bored by being in similar, colourless environments all the time, you probably won't enjoy it. It's also relatively short, and its replay value relies on reaching newly accessible areas on your second/third/etc times through the game.

You won't see the entire story on your first try, either. The Scenario Overlay system (SOL) is a new method of story telling that only opens up the whole story as you replay through the game. Not everyone's an RPG perfectionist, but if you're willing to play through the game at least twice, which you will have to in order to actually 'beat' it, go for it.

The upsides are a rather deep (compared to past BoFs) storyline, an innovative and fun strategic battle system, challenging enemies and other obstacles to overcome, and despite what I said earlier about repetitiveness in environmental settings, the graphics are top-notch.

It's different, will get frustrating at times, and is tough.

Basically I'd recommend it to anyone with an open mind and some patience.

It's a good game. ;P Though I expect a lot of fans of the series will be somewhat disappointed. :/

Well, it's to be expected. It's quite different from the rest of the series. That one was okay, but if there is a BoF VI ( Who am I kidding ? It's Capcom, AKA the Kings of Sequels lol ) I want it to be like the previous ones.

I've played through Breath of Fire 5 twice.

and while it took me a little while to get used to the battle system the game is still one i would recomend to anyone.

I'll admit the D-Counter kind of limits the use of Dragons in the game since Dragons have always been the key symbol in the game.

the fact that you cant use Dragons too much means that you just have to plan your battles out a little more.

the game is great guys. a credit to the series

Ok, I got this game. I had high hopes, because I loved the first four instaments of this series, which I've played to death. However, the fifth instalment... ugh, waste of money.

firstly, and this might seem a little picky. Cell shading. I HATE CELL SHADING! I didn't like it in Robotech Battlecry, and I didn't like it in this game! It's appalling! Graphic wise, some people will say this is great, and that's all well and good if you like it. I DON'T!

Secondly, the whole feel of the game felt wrong. It just didn't feel like a Breath of Fire. To me, felt like I was playing FFX again (And if you've read some of the worst FF games threads here, you know how much I hate FFX!).

To me, whatever greatness CAPCOM had made, by being a rival of Square, Konami and other RPG making companies, with the earlier Breath of Fire's, they botched it big time with this stinking pile of crap!

Personally, I'm gonna go back and play Dynasty Warriors 4. At least that's a game which I consider to be a great.
